Chapter 8

Elvis and Ms. Precious go back to the office where he is taken round the company by Ms. Precious who shows him everywhere.

"And this is your office," she said as she opened the last office, revealing an extravagant room.

Elvis looked around in surprise, this was the biggest office he had seen since he was shown around.

"It used to be your father's, Mr. Ford's office. But now that you have become the new President, it now belongs to you," she explained.

He walked over to the President's seat and sat on it, he slowly felt the softness of the chair. He sighed weakly, then closed his eyes.

"And what may I address you as?" He suddenly asked.

Ms. Precious smiled, then replied, "Ms. Precious, your secretary and guardian as instructed by your father,"

Elvis nodded in satisfaction. He slowly opened his eyes and sat straight.

"Send the company's documents to me," He said, dismissing her with a wave of his hand. Without a word she left the office.

Elvis sat up from the chair, he went over to the window and thought about all the difficulties he had gone through.

There was a sad depression on his face as he thought of the illness of his parents. A knock was hard on the door and Ms. Precious came in holding a pile of documents in our hand.

"Sir I am here with the documents of the company" she said as she approached the desk. She stood opposite him, waiting for him to talk.

" Keep the documents on the table" he ordered.

"Who has been taking care of the company since my father's absence?" He suddenly asked, with his back facing her.

"I am," She replied with a slight bow.

"Mn." He turned to face her. "I want you to take over as the president while I deal with some personal things," He said in an authoritative tone.

"But I was strictly instructed by Mr. Ford to guard you into-"

"Who is the current president of this company?" Elvis asked in a cold tone. Ms. Precious lowered her head in embarrassment.

"You are sir," She replied fearfully.

"Then do as you are told without objection," He commanded and she fearfully nodded for fear of being punished.

"Good." He said while Ms. Precious gulped in fear of Mr. Ford's reaction and sanction from Elvis if she failed to obey him.

While Elvis flipped through the documents she had placed on the table, she began to fiddle with her fingers as she thought of what to do.

On Elvis' part, he was trying to skim through the documents to get an idea of what it entails but his mind wouldn't stop wandering.

The thought of his ailing parents was weighing down and at the same time, it gave him more reasons on why he should put work aside and focus on helping his parents.

"Get me a cup of coffee." He said, startling Ms. Precious who was sweating even under the air conditioned room.

"Give me a few minutes, I will be back." She replied and after a curt bow, she stepped out of the office.

Left alone in the office, he rose then began to scroll through his phone. The previous night, he had done some research about the diseases.

"I think I should focus on mom first. Thanks to radioactivity the cancerous cells can be destroyed immediately." He mumbled, scratching the side of his face with the tip of his fingers.

"Finding a cure for dad is going to be extremely difficult. I can't even pronounce the name…" he filtered off when the door flung open and Ms. Precious walked in with the coffee in her hand.

"Americano coffee, this is the only one available at the moment." She said, placing it on his hand.

"At least it's still coffee." He said, bringing the cup to his mouth.

"But the tastes differ."

"Uhm…" For the next few minutes, the duo remained in the office, not saying a word to each other. It was the ticking of the clock and the soft noise that was emitting from the speaker that were the only sound in the office.

I need to do something before it becomes too late. Instead of obeying Elvis, I will obey Mr. Ford — Ms. Precious said to herself.

Immediately she raised her head, her eyes met with that of Elvis who was swirling the rest of the liquid in the container with his gaze fixed on her.

"Why don't we come to an agreement?" He said.

"What kind of agreement?" She asked with a raised brow, bracing herself for what was going to happen next.

"Whenever my pay comes in, I will pay you seventy percent. What do you think?"

"Sir…"

"I shouldn't be asking for your suggestion here. As the president, I delegate the managerial duties to you and at the end of the month, you will receive seventy percent of my salary. I hope that's enough to make you keep your mouth shut." He snapped.

"Okay sir." Shs replied, head bowed as she bit the corner of her lips in anger. She felt like she was betraying Mr. Ford who had been so good to her.

"I'll be on my way now. Don't hesitate to call me if any issues beyond your capacity arise." He said. Grabbing the documents on the table, he waved them before her, "I will mail them in the next hour, I need to digest the content."

"Okay sir." She replied, head still bent.

Several minutes later, after Elvis left the office, Ms. Previous quickly reached out for her phone and then with shaking hands dialed Mr. Ford's contact.

It didn't take long before the lines connected.

"Good day sir." She greeted, her eyes fixed on the seat Elvis was occupying moments ago.

"I hope everything went well." Mr. Ford asked on the other side. Just as she was about to give her report, the door flung open and Elvis walked in.

All the while, he had been standing behind the door with his ear placed on it. His instincts kept telling him Ms. Precious was going to inform his father so he decided to stay back.

Smirking, he walked up to her, urging her to continue with the conversation. Scared, she couldn't speak as she began to swear again.

"Are you there? Did he give you any issues? I hope he doesn't decline, talk to me." Mr. Ford said hurriedly. He had been waiting for her call all day and now that she managed to call, she was keeping him in suspense.

"Yes sir. Everything is going well as planned. He agreed to take over the company." She said with a merry tone.

"Thank you so much. I'm indebted to you."

"Not at all sir. Please take good care of yourself." She replied and with her heart in her mouth, she hung the call.

"Have you heard this saying that instincts never lies?" Elvis asked, a smirk on his face as he towered over her.

"I'm sorry." She managed to say, gripping her phone tightly with a hand and using the other to grip her skirt in fright.

"Since you spoke so well of me, I accept your apology but the next time you try this, I won't." He said and with that, he left the office.

Still swaying the documents in his hands, he made his way to the elevator and soon he was on the ground floor. He had barely taken a step out of the elevator when his wandering eyes settled on Silas Deane, a classmate from high school.

With a scoff, he continued his movement as he tried to shake off the ill Silas and his gang had done to him while still at school. He tried all means to avoid him but to his disdain, Silas walked up to him.

"It's been a while, Elvis." He said, adjusting his suit.

"What are you doing here?" Elvis scowled, darting his eyes around.

"I should be the one asking you that. In between, you've changed. Who knows that once looking…"

"That's enough, just pretend as if you don't know me and I will do that also."

"Why?" Silas asked with a chuckle. He tried to hit him but he grabbed his hand then pushed him aside.

"Stay away from me." He snapped.

Silas tried to repeat his move, it was then he saw the documents he was holding and with a widened eyes he asked, "Why are you holding that?"
