CHAPTER 59

Racheal lay curled up on her bed, her pillow soaked with tears, her body still aching from the emotional abuse hurled at her by her family earlier. Every harsh word they spat echoed in her head—“Stupid!” “Useless!” “How could you trust that bastard?”

She pressed her hands to her ears as if it would block out the insults. Her heart felt heavy, and anger bubbled beneath her pain. How could I have been so foolish? Why did I ever think Adam would help me?

Her phone buzzed beside her, interrupting her thoughts. She wiped her eyes and glanced at the screen. Adam.

Her blood boiled. She didn’t want to hear his voice, but rage overtook her, and she snatched up the phone. “What the hell do you want, you bastard?!” she screamed into the receiver. “Haven’t you done enough?”

There was a pause on the other end before Adam’s voice came through, smooth and calm. “Racheal,” he said softly, “I know you hate me right now, and I understand. But we need to talk.”
