Chapter 2

“How could Richard do this to me?” He mumbled to himself as he sat on the bed.

Sleep had disappeared from his eyes and he was no longer comfortable in staying in the apartment anymore.

Soon, the ringing of his phone brought him out of his reverie. He picked up the call immediately after he saw the caller.

It was Anastasia, his girlfriend.

“Hello?” He smiled, her call automatically lightening up his mood.

She hissed over the phone. “Didn’t you see my message?” She questioned, her harsh voice didn’t hide and it was as though she was standing before him.

“What message, Ana? I haven’t seen anything.” He shook his head.

“You dickhead. I have called you a hundred times and sent you messages! My mother is dying.” She screamed over the phone. Rather than slowly explaining things to him, she ranted on the phone.

“What do you mean?” He jumped out from the bed, looking anxious.

“I’m coming there now.” He rambled with words.

“I don’t need your fucking presence, all I need is money. My mum is dying and the doctor is asking for three million dollars. I don’t know where to get that from.” She started sobbing over the phone, something Maximus despised the most. He bit his lips.

“That’s too much of money. My father has cut off my allowance and I’m yet to have a job, after paying for your admission fee. I’m so broke right now.” He complained and she sighed heavily.

“Are you trying to console me or tell me about the unpleasant situation you are in?” She scoffed. “You promised to help me and take care of me as your girlfriend, Max, so you have to help me. Or do you want me to meet another man for this?” She questioned.

“No. No” He shook his head. “It hasn’t gotten to this, Ana.” Another statement followed, he looked worried.

Inwardly, he knew he had only one hundred and fifty dollars in his account. Anastasia would be so mad if he decided to give her such an amount.

“I… I will try to send something across to you.” He said calmly.

“Please do.” As soon as she spoke, she ended the call and he sighed heavily.

“What do I do? I can’t even raise two hundred dollars for myself.” He groaned.

Anastasia has been the love of his life, they have been dating for two years now, and since they were out of college. To him, their relationship only grew stronger and he was trying his best to make her happy.

It was obvious that he was at her mercy since Anastasia didn’t love him.

Suddenly, his phone beeped. It was an application advertisement promotion, he wanted to slide it away but it was about loans.

“I never knew such a thing existed.” He mumbled as the application started downloading and when it was done, he started inputting his verification details.

“[Loan will be credited to your account in the next few hours.]”

He smirked, smiling heartily. At least, he was able to protect and support Anastasia. Though he had no idea how he would be able to pay back.

“[Loan will be due in the next ten days.]”

Another notification came in and he almost gasped.

“Ten days? How come?” The advert and the instructions in the application were two different things.

And it was too late for him to end it.

“[Credit Alert: $3,000]”

It dawned on him that his spare one hundred and fifty dollars was also taken as a pre-compensation fee for the loan.

“This is bad.” He grunted, not feeling so happy about what he had done as he sent the fund across to Anastasia.

He tried to sleep afterwards but sleep was far from him. He tossed on the bed for hours yet he didn’t get any call from Anastasia.

“Hello. Did you see what I sent?” He had to call her since she didn't call him.

“So, what? Because you sent me a penny of $3,000, you don’t want me to have my peace, huh?” She yelled aggressively over the phone.

"Your mate can spend up to $3 million for their girlfriend, what's $3,000?" Her voice was so annoying and mean.

“What do you mean? I only asked you a question, it hasn’t gotten to this.” He said sadly.

“You clodpole, I have seen the money so leave my freaking life alone!” She yelled.

"Get the hell out of my phone!" That was her last statement as she ended the call abruptly.

“What’s going on?” He couldn’t understand what was happening as he slept.

The following morning, he decided to leave early. He didn’t want to communicate with Richard because he didn’t trust him anymore. But it was inevitable not to say goodbye.

The hallway was empty and quiet, he only heard music coming out from Richard’s bedroom.

He knocked twice but he got no response before he opened the door and stepped in.

The luggage he was holding fell from his hand as he stared at the unpleasant actions before him.

“WHAT?” He squealed in disbelief and his neckbone straightened.

Richard was in bed, having sex with his girlfriend, and even with his presence, they didn’t flinch or act like someone had caught them.

“What in the living hell is happening here?” He yelled at the top of his voice and that was when they finally noticed him.

Richard laughed as he came down from Anastasia, they roughly wore their clothes.

“Seriously? Ana!” He made a comeback.

“What are you crazy about? If you had screwed her well, she wouldn’t have been interested in another man's dick!” Richard scoffed at his face.

“What?” He couldn’t believe that such a statement was coming from his trusted friend, his eyes diverted to his woman.

The woman that had made him do things that rightly, he wouldn’t do.

“Anastasia, why did you do this?” He questioned her in a low voice, feeling embarrassed.

“What does it look like, loser?” She rolled her eyes. “I was never in love with you in the first place and you know that, so fuck off!” She yelled at his face disrespectfully.

“But, if you know I wasn’t worth your time, why did you use me? I paid your tuition fee till the end, I washed your dresses, and undies up till today, I have done things for you, Ana. And yesterday?” He paused, blaming himself for being foolish and loving a woman.

“I gave you one million dollars, is this what I get in return?” He asked, staring at her seriously.

She took a step closer to him. “You are not my match and my type in the first place, Maximus. Besides, you aren’t good in bed!” She yapped angrily and his jaw dropped.

“What? Ana?” His eyes turned red in disbelief and pain as they rolled from Richard to his girlfriend.

"This has to be a dream." He thought.
