Chapter 9

“[KuruKuru Loan App: Dear User, Your Loan of $3,000 has been due for more than one month which has increased to $1 million, kindly pay up your loan.]”

As soon as he read the text message on his phone, another message popped up.

“[KuruKuru Loan App: Dear User, Your Loan of $1 million has been cleared. Thanks for banking with us and we hope to do business with you soon!]”

“What does this mean?” His lips trembled as he was confused.

Another message popped in again.

“[Debit Alert: $1,000,000 Balance: $500.05]”

“Jesus!!!” He screamed at the top of his lungs, forgetting he was on a public bus.

“[KukuKuru Loan App: Dear User, your loan limit has been reduced to $200]”

“No. No. No.” He didn't know if he should scream again or break his phone.

“You bastard, go get a room and stop yelling at our faces!” The man sitting beside him scoffed in annoyance.

He didn't bother to exchange words with him.

“Why did I forget about this? How did this happen?” He bit his lips and quickly got off the bus.

Eyes were on him until the bus finally moved along.

[WARNING: 5 hours remaining!] The robotic voice warned him, making a short blaring sound.

“What do I do now?” He placed his hands on his head.

He had called an agent yesterday and they agreed to meet today to secure a good place. He planned on getting a cheaper place, worth $1 to $1.5 million so that if there was punishment, it wouldn't be worse but it was the opposite.

Now, he didn't even have enough money to feed or pay for his transport fare.

“Hey, you must be Mr. Maximus.” Someone said, tapping his shoulder.

The man seemed to be on a call and Maximus' phone rang.

“Umm… yes.” He nodded cryptically. It was the agent and he didn't know how to explain to him that he no longer had money to pay for the flat.

“So, should we go and see the place now?” The agent raised an anxious brow.

“You see… I don't have money for it again.” He stammered nervously.

“I knew it! I knew believing you was a waste of time but I gave you a benefit of doubt.” The agent spat at his face. “You are no different as they had described you. Loser!” With a dirty look, the agent angrily left.

The agent didn't want to waste his time fighting with him and he wasn't holding anything valuable that the agent could snatch.

He sighed heavily, rubbing his nose bridge.

As he was about to take a step, a middle-aged man and woman yelled.

“Stop there!” They screamed.

“What?” Crowds started gathering, he didn't want to run because that would only consider him a victim.

“He is the one.” The woman concluded, nodding her head.

“The one… for what?” He stared at them, looking clueless.

“Officer, arrest him!” The man charged.

“Arrest me? What did I do?” He questioned, staring at them with confusion lancing in his eyes.

“I know him. He was also accused of stealing his parents' money!”

“Yes! He has been a beggar right from college so it's obvious that he is the one.”

Some familiar and unfamiliar people in the crowd started chanting and adding pressure to the matter.

Like a fool, he didn't struggle as he was handcuffed and taken to the precinct.

[Update: Punishment already processing] The robotic voice came up as soon as he stepped his feet in the precinct.

His eyes widened and he grew anxious.

“Wait! Did this so-called system have a hand in this?” He thought inwardly.

“This is not true. Does this mean that reward and punishment are true?” He looked around the precinct, wondering what would become of him if he truly ended up in jail.

“Please. Please. I don't want to go to jail. Give me another task and I promise to fulfill it. It's just that... I didn't know where to get money from.” He tried to connect with the system and surprisingly, their mind connected.

“Are you sure this man tried to kidnap your daughter?” The police officer's voice called him out of his reverie.

“Kidnap?” He gasped in shock, looking at the strange woman whom he didn't find familiar.

“Yes.” The woman nodded with certainty.

“Please, help me. I promise to accomplish it.” He bit his lips, closing his eyes briefly.

Would the system really save him or he have finally met his doom?

[Updating… 50%] The robotic voice started scanning.

[Updating … 100%] The robotic voice concluded scanning.

[Update: Punishment overruled by user's request] The robotic voice announced.

“Wait.” The woman stopped the police officers, they were already taking Maximus to his cell.

“I think I was mistaken.” The woman rummaged through her handbag. “Here is the picture of the real culprit.” The woman had a glint of guilt in her eyes as she avoided Maximus' gaze.

“So, he is not the criminal?” The police officers rolled their eyes.

“I told you, I wasn't.” He exhaled in relief, finding it thrilling that the system could actually accept his plea.

“But… you will have to pay your bail, young man.” The police officer informed him.

“Wh… what?” Did he have to announce with a microphone that he had no money and eating for the day was impossible because he was broke?

His eyes started gathering unimaginable tears.

“Your bail is $100. If you pay, you're allowed to go home. If you can't then you will remain behind the counter.” The police officer explained to him before leaving him with the female officer at the front desk.

“Gosh!” He scratched his head, taking out his phone.

Then, he remembered he had his loan app.

He quickly borrowed $200 from them since that was his limit.

“[KuruKuru Loan App: Dear User, you have 3 days to clear up your loan as loan increase afterwards.]”

He rolled his eyes away and paid for his bail before he gained access to leave the precinct.

“When will this hell end?” That was the last word he gasped after he stepped outside, staring at the clear blue sky.

[NEW MISSION: Hack Mr. Wayles Business in 48 hours!] The robotic voice surfaced again.

[REWARD: $100 Million, +30 Cyber knowledge, +20 self-esteem, +35 popularity] The robotic voice continued.

[PUNISHMENT: 10 hours inability to walk, talk, see - death, precisely] The robotic voice said conclusively.

“What?” He exclaimed.

That was his father's top family business. Did he have a good cyber skill that'd crumble their business? What if he failed? Death!

“Never!” He shook his head in disapproval.

[User has approved the mission!] The robotic voice synced it.

“What? No. Override that, I did!” His complaint ended up in the cloud, it didn't get up to the system.

Was he up to face his family members?

"So... any hint or help?" He connected with the system, placing his phone on his ear so he wouldn't look insane.

[User only needs Free System + An Apartment + A wiring code + Cyber knowledge] The robotic voice informed him.

"I want to do this. I want to face my family again, I want to show them that, the useless and abandoned son is also intelligent and highly skilled. But, how can I attain that with nothing on me?" He complained sadly.

[WARNING: Time has started rolling. User has to start the mission.] The robotic voice came up, with a short blaring sound which only caused fear to swell in his heart.

"Can I do this?" His eyes turned red and he looked serious as he asked himself.
