"So, no longer a panzer operator?" Erwin said, taking a drag of the cigarette I had given him. It was a long and deep inhale and he looked like a smoke stack when he let his breath out."Why? Operating the new hardware is a prestigious posting. Why did you become an infantryman?"

I took my own drag of the cigarette, deciding how best to answer. It wasn't fear that held me back from telling the truth, but embarrassment. The truth had been, the tanks were too hot. I had been sweating through my uniform in the hours of going from point A to point B. Even in the firefights, I couldn't stand how hot it got. I wasn't going to tell my best friend. "I just wanted a change of scenery."

I could tell he didn't believe that, but he didn't push it either. Erwin was kind like that. "Enjoying your smoke?"

He gave me a wry grin. "How could you tell?" he asked, flicking the ashes away.
