Chapter 5 - Pre-Training First!

What?

Special Mission, you say?

Aren't these missions just ordinary tasks that even someone without basic training can do!

"Quantara, please forgive me for this! But it seems I can do all those special missions without any prior training!"

"Jack, this is standard procedure! I can't give you access to special missions until you've completed simulation training!"

"Is there no flexibility at all?" Jack asked.

He wasn't ready to give up trying to convince the beautiful AI.

"Fine! If you insist, there is actually a way..."

Hearing that, Jack adjusted the position of the pillow that had been supporting his back.

He prepared himself for what Quantara would say next.

"This training is called pre-training, with a much shorter duration and lower difficulty level compared to simulation training! Nevertheless, this training is designed to assess someone's abilities in certain aspects. However, unlike simulation training, you won't receive any rewards after completing it!"

The last sentence sounded unpleasant to Jack.

"No rewards, huh?" he thought. "But if I don't do this training, I won't even be able to babysit the girl!"

After a moment of thought, he made a decision.

"All right, I'll give it a try!"

"You can try it tomorrow, Jack! I've read your physical condition and you seem a bit tired today!"

"No! I'm fine! I want to do the training now!"

"Alright, as you wish!"

The hologram screen in front of Jack then displayed a scene surrounded by water.

After that, the environment around him also changed.

The dimly lit bedroom with a bedside lamp turned into a bright room as if it was daytime.

The hologram panel provided a view of the surroundings, revealing that Jack was on a cruise ship.

"It seems to be a Royal Ship!" he muttered.

As the son of one of the wealthiest families in Riverchester, Jack was certainly familiar with luxurious ships like this, as he enjoyed traveling on a cruise ship with a reservation on the top deck almost every year.

For your information, there were about ten decks on the Royal Ship, and the higher the deck, the higher the price.

After that, the hologram panel in front of him slowly disappeared.

"Quantara, what should I do?"

"Jack, this is just a preliminary training! Do the best you think you can! After that, let me judge your decision!"

The holographic screen disappeared completely and Jack could feel that his buttocks were on a metal floor.

Before he knew what to do, both of his ears caught the sound from the speakers.

"Attention! All passengers please put on the life jackets provided by the crew and proceed calmly to the left side of the ship and wait for further instructions!

Again, all passengers..."

Jack didn't need to hear the warning a second time to realize that there was an emergency situation on this ship.

Being on the upper deck, he didn't see anyone out here.

"Everyone must be on the lower decks by now," he muttered.

Standing on the left side of the ship, he could see nearly a hundred lifeboats waiting below to evacuate passengers.

Still unsure what to do, Jack hurried to the stairs that would take him from this deck down to the lower deck.

Boom!

Before he could reach the stairs, a loud explosion echoed from the rear of the ship, causing the large cruise liner to shake considerably.

Immediately, thick, dark smoke billowed from the ship's funnel.

"Damn! What's happening?"

Jack couldn't tell if it was engine trouble or an explosion in one of the kitchens.

At that moment, however, he saw flames begin to rise in the glass-enclosed dining area.

Jack quickened his pace toward the stairs, but his gaze inadvertently caught sight of an old woman trapped in the room.

The woman was standing against the wall, tapping her very thin hands on the glass, while her lips seemed to be repeating the word "help" over and over again.

Jack didn't think twice about approaching the woman.

"Don't panic! I'll help you!"

First he went to the door, but it was firmly locked, no matter how hard Jack tried to open it.

He also tried to break it down or kick it, but all his efforts were in vain.

"Damn!"

He then looked around, looking for something he could use to break the glass.

His eyes then landed on a fire extinguisher box not far from him.

Taking the iron tube from the box, Jack ran to the old woman and gestured for her to step back.

After the old woman followed his instructions, Jack slammed the iron tube against the wall with all his might.

Creak!

Creak!

With several hits, the wall broke and Jack slowly entered.

"Let's go!"

Jack grabbed the thin woman's hand.

But once again a loud noise echoed in their ears.

Boom!

The ship shook violently again, knocking Jack and the woman to the ground.

At the same time, the fire in the room spread rapidly.

"Ma'am, we need to go now!"

Jack stood up quickly and reached out to help the woman to her feet.

But she just shook her head. "I can't move my legs!"

The fire was moving even faster toward them.

Jack had no choice but to carry the woman in his arms.

Carefully passing through the broken wall, Jack ran quickly towards the stairs.

But when he got there, he realized the old woman couldn't get down.

Boom!

There was another loud explosion.

This time, the dining room exploded, sending shards of glass everywhere and quickly spreading the fire outside.

Not only that.

The fire was also moving very fast on the ship's deck and would soon reach Jack's location.

"Damn! Damn it! What am I going to do?"

In such a short time he had to make a decision.

Jack looked down at the lifeboats waiting to evacuate passengers.

He knew that this top deck had slightly wider sides than the decks below.

Therefore, if someone fell from this upper deck, they would fall directly into the sea.

After looking down for a moment, he had an idea.

"Forgive me, madam! This will be a little painful! Please hold on to my neck.

The old woman said nothing but did as Jack instructed.

After that...

Plunge!

Jack plunged into the sea with her.
