Chapter 6 - Is My Pre-Training Result Satisfactory?

"Jack, are you considering suicide with that old woman?"

Quantara's voice echoed as the environment around Jack slowly changed.

The vast ocean in front of him slowly disappeared, replaced by a holographic screen on which Quantara slowly appeared with her beautiful face.

"Is she really an AI?" Jack thought. "But why do I feel that she becomes more charming every time I look at her?"

The longer he stared at the virtual girl, the more admiration grew in his heart.

"Jack, are you still with me?"

Quantara asked Jack again, waving her hand as if to check if the young man was still conscious or not.

"Yes... yes... I'm here!"

"Jack, it's okay if you experience a little disturbance in your cognitive state, because it's a normal thing that happens after a significant event that shocks you!"

The AI assumed that Jack's confusion was due to the pre-training mission the young man had just completed.

"We can discuss this tomorrow morning if you want to rest!"

Quantara said again, noticing that Jack was still staring at her with a slightly more intense look.

"Oh, no! No! That's not necessary! I need to know the result right now!"

Jack's expression changed to a serious one.

He didn't want the AI to think he was unwell all the time.

"Alright! Based on my assessment, you should not pass this pre-training!"

What?

How is that possible?

Didn't I save that old woman?

Several questions arose in Jack's mind.

But before he could express his thoughts, Quantara spoke again.

"First of all, I would like to ask you, did you not think before bringing that old woman to jump into the sea with you?"

Quantara's face looked slightly annoyed, which made her look even more beautiful.

"Okay, since you didn't answer, I assume you don't know!" the AI continued.

"With her age approaching eighty, her physical strength is not that great! If she jumps from that height, you can be sure she won't survive! And as predicted, the old woman died of heart failure right after her body touched the water!"

Quantara's words made Jack sad.

"Because of my carelessness, the old woman died! I should have considered her condition earlier!"

However, seeing that Jack seemed to regret this, Quantara tried to comfort him.

"Luckily, it was only a simulation! So you didn't really make a mistake against anyone!"

"Really?" Jack asked.

"Yes, of course! Didn't I explain that before?"

There is a difference between a simulation and a mission.

In a simulation, Jack could make a mistake, even several times, and nothing would happen in reality.

A simulation is also similar to a video game, where a player enters the game and plays a role.

A mission is different.

Jack cannot make mistakes because it will affect real people or situations out there.

Jack nodded, remembering what the virtual girl had said earlier.

"Huuft, fortunately! But why did I feel somehow familiar with that old woman!" Jack thought.

"However, after observing your heartbeat and reading your overall body condition, I see that you are a good person with a high sense of responsibility! Therefore, I declare you to have passed this pre-training!"

Quantara's words touched him.

After his father's death three years ago, no one considered him a good young man.

If they didn't see him as a spoiled young man living off his wife's pity, they would consider Jack as a parasite or even trash who only caused trouble and hardship for others.

Quantara's words lifted his morale and spirit somewhat.

"So, can I choose this special mission?" Jack said after thinking for a moment.

"Yes, and congratulations on your first pre-training! Your first mission starts tomorrow!"

Jack then closed his hologram panel while he continued to think about Quantara's words.

"She is an AI that cannot lie! If she says that I am a good person and responsible, that is the truth, right?" Jack said to himself.

He said that because Catherine had always called him a lazy young man who couldn't do anything for his life.

At the time, Jack didn't believe it, but he didn't have the courage to say it.

"Catherine, remember my words! One day you and the entire Wilson family will regret what you have done to me and my family!"

Jack finally fell asleep shortly thereafter.

Unknown to him, Matilda had been listening to him from outside his room ever since.

"Quantara!" she said quietly. "Is that his girlfriend? She may sound very familiar to him, but I can't let Jack get close to a girl of unknown origin! He's just an innocent young man who looks strong but is very fragile inside! Who knows if this girl will hurt and betray him later! I must find a way to keep Jack away from her!"

Matilda finally felt relieved in her heart because Jack was no longer closing his heart to a girl.

After Gunnar married Matilda, Jack once said that he would never get married in his life.

Of course, he didn't explicitly say it was because Matilda had replaced his mother.

But maybe the woman was a little too protective.

She thought that Jack was too easily deceived. So she had to find him a girlfriend herself.

"I invited my friends to bring their daughters to this house, but Jack didn't seem happy! Maybe because he wants a prettier girl than them? I think it makes sense!"

All night long she thought of ways for her stepson to get close to a girl of her choice.

"Should I contact the Reynolds family? I hope it is true that they are very eager to match their daughter with Jack?"

The next day.

Jack woke up to the sound of birds on the wall, which was an alarm that Jack Andrews had set earlier, going "chuckow-chuckow" all the time, disturbing his sleep.

He got up to turn off the alarm and prepared to go back to sleep.

"It's only six in the morning! I still have an hour to sleep and then get ready for the mission!" he said.

He went back to the bed and pulled back the blanket.

But just then his ears heard Matilda's voice from outside the door.

"Jack, are you awake?"
