The news drops like a bomb on his mother, he can see the confusion in her eyes as she tries to digest what he has said to her.

"Mum, I'm sorry." He takes her hand immediately. "I know that Ashley has been hurtful to you, but you've always seen her as your daughter. You have to understand that I just wanted to protect you from hurt."
