I swallow and exhale a long breath. Everything that has happened flashes through my head.
Nao: “What happens now?”
Alyson: “So you’re awake.”
!
I struggle through the pain and look to my right to see Alyson by my bed.
Nao: “What are you doing here.”
Alyson: “Is that a problem?”
Nao: “No, I’m just surprised.”
Alyson: “…”
Nao: “…”
Alyson: “So, explain yourself.”
Nao: “Is it not obvious, Trevor beat me up.”
Alyson: “…I mean before all of that.”
Nao: “I did the right thing, any humane person would do it.”
Alyson: “Those eyes didn’t look human to me.”
Nao: “…”
Nao: “Maybe not, but I couldn’t sit by and let them beat up my friends like that. If I…have to become a monster-”
Alyson: “Don’t finish that. You don’t have to do that.”
I begin to retort but something is happening. Alyson’s general seriousness begins to crumble before my eyes.
Nao: “What’s with you?”
Alyson: “That’s my question!”
Nao: “!”
Alyson: “Don’t you realize that if you keep doing this you’ll get yourself killed! Stop trying to do things beyond your ability!”
Nao: “…”
Alyson: “I…don’t want to lose you too.”
Tch.
Nao: “What do you want from me!?”
Alyson: “!!”
Nao: “Should we just shut up and take our abuse? I don’t care whether it’s not within my ability, I rather try than live the rest of my life on my knees.”
Alyson: “…Nell and I won’t watch you burn up in the sun. Goodbye, Nao.”
She cleans off her tears and leaves me alone in the room. No, not alone. I’m in a room full of broken bodies. Those of my friends and those of my enemies.
Nao: “It’s too late to back out now.”
*Sigh*
Nao: “ So this is the cost of being the main character. I’ll know when this ends if the price was worth it.”
Arc?
Arc: “Yes?”
How’s my body?
Arc: “Healing well enough. Speaking of healing…”
*Ding*
Points: 6
Arc: “You did well over 10 spells today.”
Good, I need those points if I’m going to beat the King next time.
*Door open*
I look to the door and rushing to my side is the person I didn’t want to see. Not after what I almost did?
Nell: “Nao, are you okay!”
Nao: “I’m okay, mom. Sorry they had to call you from work.”
She hugs me gently, enveloping me in her warmth. Something I need but don’t deserve. And as soon as I think that the warmth leaves and is replaced with dread.
Nell: “You promised…”
Nao: “Mom I-”
Before I could say anything she flicked my forehead hard enough to push my head back some. Knowing my mom, this is as bad as a slap.
Nell: “You broke your promise and got into fights. Even Alyson seems shaken by what she saw you do.”
Nao: “But-”
Nell: “Nao, you’ve been suspended from school for a month.”
Nao: “!”
Nao: “What about those bullies?! Don’t tell me they get to go free!”
Nell: “Nao, you beat one of them so bad that they might not make it.”
Nao: “!!”
Nell: “What they did to you and your friends is unforgivable but that pales in comparison to you. You…might really be charged with murder.”
Nell: “Why didn’t you tell me…we could have done something….anything but this...”
I couldn’t say anything…she’s right. I already killed 3 people and now this….
What am I becoming?
Arc: “What’s necessary.”
W-What?
Nell: “Nao, despite everything you’ve done I forgive you for breaking that promise.”
Nao: “R-Really?”
Nell: “Yes, because I also kept something from you. Our…living situation is not the best.”
Nao: “What do you mean?”
Nell: “It means that I’m getting older and can’t be as productive as I once was. Income has been steadily declining along with work hours. I…can’t keep up and one day…we might lose the house.”
Nao: “Mom! Why didn’t you tell me? I could have helped or lessened your burden in some way. I would never have been as lazy as I was before if I knew.”
Nell: “I didn’t want to further burden you. I assume that’s the same reason why you didn’t tell me.”
Nao: “*Nod*”
Nell: “We both made mistakes Nao. If we were more truthfully with each other then maybe we could have avoided this.”
Mom bows her head and I try desperately to stop her but she insisted.
Nell: “I’m sorry for keeping this from you.”
Nao: “Mom I…”
I bow myself. As best I can in my situation.
Nao: “I’m sorry too, for everything I’ve done and kept secret.”
We both bought our heads back and accepted the other’s apology.
Nell: “No matter what happens, we’ll be truthful and rely on each other more from now on. Promise me.”
Nao: “I-”
Nell: “Promise me.”
Nao: “…Okay. I’ll tell you everything.”
Arc: “What are you doing?”
You said we need more allies and the one person who’s been an ally to me all my life is right here. I never should have kept this a secret.
Arc: “I don’t thin-”
Nao: “Mom, I have something to show you. Can you draw the curtain?”
Nell: “O-Okay.”
*Curtains close*
Once she sat down I transformed the necklace into a book with a flash of light. I used minor illusion to be on the same show I did in front of the Black Listers.
Nao: “Mom, I’m a mage.”
I told her everything and this time I mean everything. I watched her eyes start with wonder and end with horror. The one thing I wanted to keep through all have this, is torn away right in front of me. And it’s done by my own hands.
Nell: “I…need some time.”
Mom leaves through the curtain and leaves me truly alone.
Arc: “I tried to warn you. Now with your damaged mental state, you’ll be weaker going forward.”
I tuned Arc out and sunk deeper into my bed. The harsh light bare down on me, burning away any comfort left.
Time moved fast after that. After I was healed enough I was taken back home by mom. I assume the others went home in a similar way. When I got back home, it was colder. No one said a word as they went into their room.
In my own room, I just laid in bed staring at my ceiling. I was too bruised, tired, and depressed to work. Despite Arc’s protests, I refused to meditate or work out.
I just wanted to sleep it all away.
*Ring*
I turn my head to my phone on the desk. I consider ignoring it but I remember that there’s only 1 person that would call me.
I sigh and transform my head into Alphon.
Alyson: “Hey Alphon, I know this is sudden but would you like to come over?”
…Are you serious?
Nao: “S-Sure, what’s wrong?”
Alyson: “I just…need some company. A lot happened today.”
I can understand that, I suppose this can take my mind off of everything.
Nao: “Happy to help
Alyson: “Thanks, I’ll send over my address. Knock and I’ll come get you.”
Nao: “Cool, I’ll be there in 20 minutes.”
Alyson: “Thanks…it’s nice to know your voice.”
Nao: “…Same.”
I hang up and prepare myself for Alyson. Transforming, clothes, washing up, healing wounds, and mental prep.
20 minutes from now, we’ll use each other to forget our problems. I have no problem with that.
*Knock**Knock**Door Open*Alyson: “Come in.”I follow Alyson to her room and to the bed. Despite my hesitation, Alyson pulled me to sit with her. A few minutes passed with no words flowing. Only an awkward silence filled the air. Only Alyson would have the strength to break that silence.Alyson: “Your less…animated than usual. Did you have a bad day too?”Nao: “…You can say that.”Alyson: “Do want to talk about it?”Nao: “I came here for you so lets start there.”Alyson: “…Fine, I’ll go first.”Alyson: *Sigh*Alyson: “My brother got into a fight today, a really bad one. It’s partly my fault but I wish he wouldn’t put himself in these situations.”Nao: “You’re fault?”Alyson: “I shouldn’t have put him on the black list at the time. I was mad and…scared of Nao’s aggressive sudden improvement.”Nao: “That’s a…bad thing?”Alyson: “Not entirely but doing that is only going to hurt in the long run. What he’s trying is just not possible.”Why does she keep saying that!Nao: “Why do you say
It’s been 2 days since Nao left school but he left a noticeable impact. Trevor, has been training for the rematch, bullies are a bit scared to approach us, and most importantly…Mat: “Man, Alyson has been out of it these days. Her test scores have taken a nose dive.”Anthony: “Nao is still helping us even while suspended.”Velo: “Yeah, he even infused a shield spell onto this ring I got from a cereal box.”Tallow: “But she’s still among the top 20 students in the school both athletically and academically.”Anthony: “It’s enough, soon someone is going to challenge her place as queen.” Mat: “And when Nao comes back, he’ll take the position of King. After what you told us he was fighting evenly with him. I’m sure after a month of training, he’ll be way stronger.”Anthony: “…We’ll see.”I still remember when we went to see Nao yesterday. The focus, the new power, and improved body…he’s even taller now…Anthony: “Hey guys, do you want to try exercising.”Everyone: “No way.”Mat: “Look at
Tonight, Hillview is getting lucky with a meteor shower. Couples of Hillview, be sure to take advantage of this to-”I change the channel. Why does everything remind me of him? Now I know what Nao felt like back he was rejected for the first time. I shouldn’t have made fun of him, this feels terrible. I look at my phone and the desire to call him consumes me again. No, I’ve called enough. At this point, I’m probably coming off as a stalker. I lost my chance at a love life.Look at me, I can’t even gather the strength to go to school early anymore. But I still have to go. I leave my room and go to the bathroom. At least, I try to but Nao is still inside taking a bath.*Knock**Knock*Alyson: “I still have to go to school Nao, get out already.” *Bathroom door opens*!!Nao: “H-Hey Alyson.”Holy….he…actually looks…hot? How did he get so tall and…well built? I actually have to look up a bit.Nao: “Are you…blushing?”Alyson: “N-No! Your growth spurt just caught me off guard. Out of the w
I say goodbye to my friends and head back to my room. Nao: “Well, that’s all my points gone. Hey Arc, am I ready for virtual reality training level 0?”Arc: “No.”Nao: “Wow, that’s…ridiculous.”Arc: “The function was designed for mages who have transcended peak human levels.”Nao: “I’m…really working up to that point huh? When you say it like that I have to ask what’s even the point of power like that.”Arc: “Don’t remember the shadows?”My heart rate spikes as my mind touches the edges of that memory. Nao: “Y-Yes…but why are they even here? I wish things can go back to normal…kind of.”*Knock**Knock* I go to the door and open it to see Alyson standing at the entrance. She looks a bit…shy.Alyson: “Nao.”Nao: “Alyson.”Alyson: “I can’t be your friend. We’re too different and I don’t expect you to keep this successful run. You should stop before you hurt yourself and disappoint us all.”Nao: “Did you come here to just make me mad?”Alyson: “But! I can be and should’ve been your sis
Nell: “It will be okay….it will be okay.”Nell repeats that through tears but I can’t help but stare down the barrel of those guns. Magic? Murder? It’s all too much to take. What’s even real anymore?Sever: “We got it, move out.”Alyson: “Na-”I try to get up but the rifles move to freeze me in place. Nell: “What are you going to do to my son?”Sever: “…You don’t need to know.”Nell: “…”No…Sever: “Be sure to go to school tomorrow Alyson. We need everything to move as usual. Low suspicion and all that.”I-I’m too scared to move. I couldn’t do anything as Sever dragged Nao out of my life. With a slam of the door, everything starts to settle. A day that was supposed to heal us is instead one where we’re damaged beyond repair. And it’s not even over yet.Alyson: “N-Nell, I need to know what you meant by Nao being a mage.”She’s still holding me in her arms and shaking trying to hold back a flood of tears.Nell: “Alyson…I’ll try to explain. But I don’t know what good it will do….Nao is
…Where…am I? Arc: “Ah, you’re finally awake.”What’s happening? Did the spells stay active? Why am I tied up on this super uncomfortable chair?Arc: “Yes the spell is still active. We’re currently at some kind of warehouse.”Hopefully, it’s not too far from home. *Door Open*Arc: “Keep appearance. Don’t let them know you’re awake yet.”I do what Arc says and keep my head down. I can’t see anything but I can hear it.Sever: “That’s what he said. Maybe you’re just incompetent. I knew keeping alive for something like this would come in handy. If we did what you suggested we would have no leads.”I can feel it too. There’s a movement in the edges of my vision, the shadows shift and squirm in the background. They’re speaking but I can’t understand a word they’re saying. I try to block it out but every time I try, I feel blood flowing out my ears. As if they want me to listen. Fear begins to build inside my throat. The nightmares, the all-consuming void, and burning skin. Breathe.I ste
Fuck!*Punch*I try my best to block or dodge Trevor’s blows but…I’m getting overwhelmed. The only reason why I’m still conscious is because of the lightning shock. Damn it, Nao had to fight this monster? How am I supposed to win without magic!“You seem to be struggling love.”Yeah, but I can take it. If Nao can, I’ll push through this new pain. I’ll find a way to fry this bastard. “Awwww, that’s my husband. Undying will and strength. But you might need some help.” What do yo-Trevor: “Come on Anthony, I had more fun with Nao. Stop shooting those fireworks and fight me like a man.”Anthony: “Ahhh, my lover’s body feels soooo good.”Trevor: “Wow, your voice. Why do you sound like a girl now?”Anthony: “Don’t worry about that. You wanted a real fight right, how about you play with me for a while.”My body is moving without my will now. It’s a puppet now, moved by the star I made vows with. She beckons Trevor to fight in a somewhat provocative way. I rather fight him myself, but I’ll
Arc: “Be careful, this is your first mage battle. Not only that, Anthony has an artifact.”What’s that?Arc: “A true magic item, among the strongest of their kind.”A magic item huh? I search through my pockets and hope I still have them. Inside I feel two pens and take out the scan one. I need to know what I’m dealing with. I point it at Anthony who’s waiting for me to deliver the first blow. Good thing, this gives me time.Anthony(With Artemis): Strength: 10Endurance: 10Intelligence: 21Charisma: 20Agility: 14 Magic: 35 VSNao(Base/No Shape Shift):Strength: 21Endurance: 17.5Intelligence: 19.5Charisma: 18.5Agility: 16.5Magic: 24Oh, that not too ba-Arc: “Focus!”*CRACK*Purple lightning snakes forwards threatening to cook me but I place a shield up just in time. In spite of the warning, I barely could catch it on the shield. It even pushed me back.Arc: “Idiot, it’s the magic stat you have to be careful of. Even mages who neglect their body can level cities.
