"How is she?" Ben asked Dr. Mekenzie immediately he came out to the reception.
"She is okay at the moment but she is sick.""But what caused her to collapse? Its not like, I over worked her on the farm." Mrs. Palsy said uncaringly. The doctor gave her a look that was laced with questions.
Mrs. Palsy just looked away.
"She was weak that's what caused her collapse." Dr. Mekenzie said with the expression he gave her earlier."But what caused her to be weak to the point of collapsing." Ben asked worriedly.
"Come into my office please, let's talk in there."In the office, Dr. Mekenzie continued,"We.did a test on her, after I noticed the paleness of her skin; I realized there was an issue."
"What sickness?" Ben asked alarmed.
"She has Acute Myeloid Leukaemia; and the situation is not looking good."Mrs. Palsy said nothing. She looked disinterested.
"Doctor I am surprised because she never complained about feeling sick," Ben said."And no one noticed anything sickly about her all this while?" The doctor said with a surprised look.
Ben said nothing; the statement felt like an indictment on him, especially since his mother was no more.
"Come to think of it doctor, this wasn't the first " Ben said.
"It had happened on two other ocassions but we didn't read too much meaning into it.""You all should not have ignored it." The doctor said.
"Dr.Mekenzie what do we do now," Mrs. Palsy asked impatiently."She has to undergo treatment." he replied with an annoying look. There was a brief silence."And it has to start as soon as possible." The doctor said.Worry was etched on Ben's face." Can I see her now?" Ben asked.
"She is sleeping now but in the next 30, you can go in and see her.
............................................................................
"Ben I am sorry I didn't get here in time." Henry said immediately Ben came out of the wardwhere Betsy was."Its okay." Ben answered sullenly
"So how is she?" Henry asked"She is fine right now but she is really sick.""What kind of sickness."
"She has cancer.""What!" Henry exclaimed.Ben tried to stifle the tears that were threatening
to cry out.Henry was speechless and sad.As Ben and Henry talked Mrs. Palsy kept looking
at Henry suspiciously especially with the hoodthat he wore."She will have to go through treatment, obviously." Henry said.
"Yea, that is what the doctor said.""She going to be fine Ben, she will." Henry said; trying to comfort Ben and give him hope.
"Thanks Henry, thanks.""Aunt Mary couldn't be here; she is not feeling too well."
"What is wrong with her." Ben asked."She had a fall and broke her ankle.""Oh! How is she now?"
"I guess she is okay." Henry replied."Would you like to see Betsy?" Ben asked.Henry's face lit up like a Christmas tree.
"I sure would love to." He said smiling......................................................................Six weeks after they came back from the hospital,Mrs. Palsy called Ben, "Listen I don't think I can cope with taking care of your sick sister.""But ma'am, I can't take care of her all by myself and right now she needs to start her treatment." Ben said with a teary voice.
Betsy in her weak state just looked at his brother with empathy.
"Also that means you have to find somewhere else to live." she added.
"But ma'am what have we done to you." Betsy's voice was low and Mrs. Palsy could hardly hear what she said.
"You have done nothing; I just can't cope with this anymore." Mrs. Palsy said pointing at Betsy and her wheel chair."But we have nowhere to go." Ben said.
"Of course you do," she countered. There was a confused look on Ben's face."Ben, the first day at the hospital I overheard a bit of your conversation with the boy who wore a hoody." She said.
Ben said nothing."I took you in because you didn't have any relative with whom you both could live with." she paused. Ben said nothing."But from the conversation I overheard, you seem to have an aunt." She said with that kind of smile that someone has when he or she has discovered a treasure.
"Is that not so Ben?Did I hear wrong?" She asked.
"No ma'am, you heard right.""But why didn't you say anything about it to me.""I didnt know about her until after the death of my mum. It was during that period I knew of her existence."
"Listen, I am a widow and I can not cope with this right now. Her treatment is goin to be expensive; as if being crippled wasn't enough, she also has cancer." She yelled that last part.
"Both of you will have to go live with her. So inform her to come see me tomorrow so that I can hand you over to her formally." She said.
Ben still did not say anything.
I allowed you both to remain here on my farm after your mum's death, because I was persuaded to do it."Betsy was crying as she heard what she was saying.
"Your mother was not that useful in the house."She was useless; always falling sick and .......""Enough of what you are saying Mrs. Palsy." Ben said menacingly.
"What did you say?" She asked casually."I said enough with the rubbish that you are spewing."There was shock on her face
"How dare you talk to me that way?" She said"I will talk to you anyhow I seem fit." Ben said moving towards her.The shocked expression on her face , transformed to fear
"My mom was your maid and she worked so hard that it affected her health till she died." Ben said in angerMrs. Palsy was terrified now.
"Probably if you had paid her, the two months salary that you owed her, she would not have died." Ben yelledTears just trickled down Betsy's face as his brother spoke about their mum.
"You are a woman without a soul; a slave mistress." Ben yelled out.Mrs. Pasly began to shiver as though she had been trapped
in an iceberg."Only God knows if it wasn't you that also killed your husband with your cold heart." Ben said finally. There was a silence that was deafening. Ben was panting hard from the energy he expelled saying those words to Mrs. Palsy.
"Get out, get out, get ooooooooout." Mrs. Palsy yelled. The walls vibrated due to her yelling. "Take your crippled sister and your wretched existence out, from my house."
Ben looked at her straight in the eye and said, "one day youwill wish you never said that," and he left with his sister to his aunt................................................................................."I am glad you came Ben. Please make yourself at home."Mary said with a feeling of elation. "Thank you aunt. It really feels good to finally meet you." Betsy said, feebly."You don't need to thank me. This is the least I can do to honour the memory of my only sister." She said with teary eyes.
"Its okay aunt, *cough*" Betsy started coughing.Betsy was given water to stop the cough; but she was weak from it so she was taken to the bed to lie down.
"Ben what is the next thing as regards Betsy's situation?"A backdoor that led to the back of the cottage opened and Henry walked in. "Hi! Ben."
"Hi! Henry." Ben replied."To your question, she is suppose to go for chemo today, although she has some drugs that she has been taking, moreover it has been six weeks since she was diagnosed." Ben replied.
"That means she ought to have started chemo a long time ago." Henry said.
"Yea, you are right." Ben replied.Mary had a reflective look on her face. She was wondering how she was going to raise money to fund her niece's treatment which was going to cost money that she did not have.
...............................................................................l"Ben! Ben! Ben!." Mary shouted hysterically.Ben got up instantly."What is it?" He asked looking towards where Betsy lay."I don't know what is wrong with her. She woke me up and complained about having a headache and then she went limp." Mary said crying.
"Betsy! Betsy! Betsy! wake up, please wake up." Ben shouted in fear. Betsy was not moving and there was blood coming out of her nose.
"What kind of question is that James"? Rose asked with a stunned look."Don't toy with me Rose; who is the father of Casey?""Its Gerard of course; Whose else, would it be?" Rose said, avoiding his gaze."Then take a look at this." James gave her a piece of paper."What is this?" She asked; taking it from him reluctantly. She scanned it hastily and her expression changed suddenly like the weather. "How did you get this?" She said with fear written all over her face."It doesn't matter how I got it. Just tell me the truth."Rose was dumbstruck. She felt the world spinning round and everything was upside down."James how did you get this?" She asked again."Rose stop wasting my time and tell me what I need to know." James yelled."I do not know what to say." Rose said."Rose, listen to me," He said cupping her face in his hands. "Just speak to me; tell me the truth, please."She looked up at James and she was a bit relaxed."Casey, is your daughter." She said as she sank on the bed"
Thank you Mr. Harry." Mary said to her neighbor a former medic in the army. "She is conscious now but she needs to get to the hospital." "We will be taking her there tomorrow." Mary said. "She is in a critical stage. She might not pull through if this occurs again." Mr. Harry warned. "Thank you once again." Mary said Mr. Harry just nodded and left. "What do we do now?" Ben asked frenziedly. "I don't know Ben, I don't know." Aunt Mary sighed Henry was on the phone with someone. "Let me look at the things that I can pawn." Mary said. Betsy was resting but her paleness was very evident.Henry signalled to Ben for them to go outside after Henry was done with his conversation over the phone. "Ben we have to do something fast so that Betsy can begin chemo now." Henry said "Yea! she ought to have started it like yesterday." Ben replied. There was a brief silence. "But how do we get money?" Ben asked with worry as his companion. "I think I have an idea on how we can get money." He

It was some minutes to midnight and Ben and Henry were wondering why their aunt was not yet around."I guess the rain, couldn't let aunt Mary be here."Ben said."I guess so." Henry replied. They had not talked much since the incident at the jewelry store."What went wrong Henry?" Ben asked"I really don't know Ben." He replied"What do you mean that you don't know?""Exactly what it means; I do not know." He yelled at Ben"But you promised nothing was going to go wrong Henry." Ben yelled at Henry."I said so but things happen, right?" Henry said."This is Bad. Does it mean my sister will die?" Ben said aloud but more to himself than to Henry."No she won't Ben. She won't. We will get out of here and makesure she is taken care of." Henry assured Ben."It was some minutes after 1:00 a.m. and Aunt Mary was still not around. They both began to worry. "I hope nothing happened to her." Henry said.Ben did not say anything but he had that eerie feeling he always had when he felt something
Chapter TenTwo days later Aunt Mary came out of coma. At firstIt took her sometime to remember the events of the past few days that she was in a coma. But after some few hours she was able to recall what happened some few days ago."Your aunt is awake." Detective Chad told them. They were glad. They hoped that the four days they hadspent in the police station was going to end soon but theyboth knew things would never be the same with Besty gone."Can we go to see her?" Henry asked. He thought about it then nodded his head in the positive. They were transported there to the hospital, closely guarded and watched. When Aunt Mary saw the boys she was elated and glad."How are you boys?"She managed to say.Henry and Ben just looked at each other and said nothing."You ought not to have drove in the night especially with the bad weather." Ben said.If you both had listened to me, I wouldn't have done that""I am sorry Mary." Ben said."I can see the policemen outside." She said"Yes
"She had to go. There was no way I go take such a betrayal from her." Rose thought. She looked at Casey who was doing an assignment on her laptop."At least the secret will still remain a secret." She thought."Ma'am what do I do with the sausages and the beef?" Mrs. Mendoza came out from the kitchen to ask Rose. There was no reply from Rose. "Mom! Mom! Mom!. "Casey called."Oh! What is it?" Rose asked."Mendy was talking to you." Rose said."Oh! I am sorry Mendy." Rose apologised."It's okay ma'am." "What is it?" "You said I should let you know once I was done with the sauce for the spaghetti.""Yea I said so. So how is it with the sausages and the beef?". Rose asked."That is what I was asking you about ma'am." Mendy said. She gave her some instructions and Mrs. Mendoza left. Casey was just looking at her mother. She was wondering what she was thinking about that made her to be unconsciousof her environment."Mom, are you alright?" Casey asked her mom"I am good dear." She replie
Chapter 12"What's up Ben." Henry asked when they met in the yard of the detention. It was the place where they had time to exercise and relate with others that were also in custodyHe looked up at Henry and said nothing. Henry noticed he was looking at the pendant in his hand. It was given to Betsy by their mom.It was the only possession he had right now in his short existence in earth."I am sorry B; I really didn't get to know her and it pains me.""She was my twin but she was the stronger of the both of us." "Yea. It's obvious from the way she battled the pains during her sickness." Henry said."I wish she didn't come to this world with such pain.""I get you B; I get you." Henry said patting Ben on the back. The next day they all went to bury her. It was scarcely attended. Ben and Betsy did not have friends."How are you boys holding up in there?" Mary asked. She still had a bandage on her right arm and she walked with a walking stick."We are good Aunty." Henry replied."Ben h
Chapter Thirteen"Who exactly committed suicide." Ben asked from his detention."I have no idea what his name is mate." The guy from the cell close to him replied.Ben wondered why the person would decide to end his life."What reason will lead someone to end his life." He wondered.Ben laid on his small bed and focused on the lighting bulb above him.He was ill at ease because he had that feeling he always had when he felt something bad had happened or was going to happen, especiallyto someone close to him."I hope Henry is alright?" He thought to himself. He no reason to be worried for Henry but the train of thought their conversation took the last time they talked was a bit of an omen for Benthat Henry felt he had no reason to live. Some hours later, it was time for a symposium. Inmates were already there.Ben found a seat for himself and kept looking around for Henry but he was nowhere in sight."Why can't I find him?" He asked himself.Eveyiwas seated now and the warden introdu
