Chapter Nine

It was some minutes to midnight and Ben and Henry were wondering why their aunt was not yet around.

"I guess the rain, couldn't let aunt Mary be here."Ben said.

"I guess so." Henry replied.

They had not talked much since the incident at the jewelry store.

"What went wrong Henry?" Ben asked

"I really don't know Ben." He replied

"What do you mean that you don't know?"

"Exactly what it means; I do not know." He yelled at Ben

"But you promised nothing was going to go wrong Henry."

Ben yelled at Henry.

"I said so but things happen, right?" Henry said.

"This is Bad. Does it mean my sister will die?" Ben said aloud but more to himself than to Henry.

"No she won't Ben. She won't. We will get out of here and make

sure she is taken care of." Henry assured Ben.

"It was some minutes after 1:00 a.m. and Aunt Mary was still not around.

They both began to worry.

"I hope nothing happened to her." Henry said.

Ben did not say anything but he had that eerie feeling he always had when he felt something bad has happened.

"Ben what is it?" Henry asked, when he saw the way Ben was looking at him.

"Nothing Henry. Its just this feeling I use to have." Ben replied

"What kind of feeling? And feeling about what?" Henry asked.

"Its nothing Henry." Ben replied.

Henry let it go and they both slept in the cell with both of them hoping

that tomorrow would bring a better day.

................................................................................

The next morning, Ben asked one of the policemen that brought them in, that

he wanted to make a call to his aunt.

The policeman allowed him but when he

made the call. Nobody picked the call. Ben was worried now.

"Please, I can't reach my aunt." He told one of the policemen.

The policeman tried and there was no reply also.

Then suddenly one policeman who looked like Will Smith in Bad boys movie

came to the policeman who was with Ben and whispered into his ears.

Immediately they all left the station in a hurry.

Ben began to wonder what had happened to generate  this sudden reaction from everyone in the police station.

"Please, what is the problem that has got you all

worried." Ben asked

"There was an accident last night." A young policewoman answered him.

When Ben heard this he became worried. His guts was telling him that it was Aunt Mary who was involved in the accident.

"Henry did you hear that?" "

Yes Ben. Are you thinking what I am thinking?" Henry asked.

"Yes, I am Henry.

"I really hope it's not Aunt Mary that was involved in the accident even though I am thinking it right about now." Ben said.

"So how do we know what has happened?" Henry asked.

"I am not sure yet. We have to wait." Ben replied.

They waited for about an hour before they got the news that it was their aunt that was involved in the accident.

"I am sorry boys." The policeman that arrested

them was telling them.

"So how is she?" Henry asked.

"Her situation is not good. She is in a coma right now." The policeman said

"God why did this have to happen?" Ben exclaimed.

Henry just put his head in his hands. He was regretting

not listening to her when she tried talking him out of the plan that he and Ben were trying to do.

Then they both remembered that Betsy was home alone.

"Please, our sister is at home alone." Ben told the policeman who was called Detective Chad.

Detective Chad looked at Ben, wondering what he meant.

"Our sick sister is at home alone." Henry said

"And she was not in a good position health wise when wel eft her and our aunt." Ben added

"And right now we don't know the state she is in after Aunt

Mary also left her." Henry added also.

"That is serious." Detective Chad said.

If both boys were worried before, now they were petrified.

Betsy was the reason they did what they did even though they got caught.

"I will send someone over to your house to check on her." The detective said.

He called on one junior policeman and sent him to Aunt Mary's house.

Henry gave the address to the policeman and he was off.

All the boys could do now was to wait and hope they didn't get another bad news from the policeman regarding Betsy

An hour later, Detective Chad got a call from the policeman he sent to check on Betsy.

Henry and Ben were watching his reaction because they knew who was calling Detective Chad.

"Is your sister physically challenged?" The detective asked.

"Yes she is. Is she alright?" Ben asked anxiously.

"Hmmmm. I am afraid boys I have bad news for you both; your sister is dead.

.......................................................................

Ben was distraught. He couldn't understand the fate that made

two people he cared about dieing because they had no proper care.

"Why did they die?" He said to himself

Henry couldn't say anything. He was said that he did not get to spend time with his half sister.

"I have lost my mom and my sister because I was not there tor them." Ben said.

"Its not your fault." Henry tried to console him.

"It is my fault Henry. If I fought Scrawny and those boys off, I wouldn't have lost my mom." Ben said as tears dropped down his face.

"You can't blame this on you. It is those street boys who should bear the blame." Henry said

"I was not strong enough." Ben said.

"All this will make you stronger now Ben. So you have to man up." Henry said.

"Yes! I have to man up and I will start with taking revenge on Scrawny.

"I agree with you on that Ben." Henry said

"I am sorry for your loss." Detective Chad said.

Ben just looked up at him and the pain in his eyes was so much that it was palpable.

Ben had no idea what the future held for them him and Henry but one thing was certain, he was going to make sure no one close to him died again.
