The bright morning sun above the town rests on the roofs of the tiny houses. Their shadows resting on the paths and the tall trees scattered in the town created some shade for the narrow path that broke into the houses.

I didn’t notice the old woman return from the farm last night. When I open my eyes, Tony is pacing the hut with one hands wrapped around his chin and the other crossed below its elbow

I stretch my hands from the floor mat humming and turning on the bed till I hear the satisfying sound of my joints snapping back to form – I will never get used to this. My sleepy eyes rest on him and I frown a little “what are you so agitated about?”

He stops pacing hurrying toward me and sits on the edge of the mat “Mrs. storyteller didn't come back last night” my lids burst open

I know I didn’t hear her come in but I still did not expect her to not be home all night, in the normal circumstance I wouldn’t be so intrusive but here there are a lot of things to worry about - like the shadows

“what?” I finally say, I search his face for any hint of a joke. Hoping this counts for one of his big old dirty pranks

“I don't know why? But she hasn't shown up since she left” he continues, surprisingly calm “did you hear anything last night?” he asks.

I rub the tiny headache off the sides of my head with my fingers “I don't think so, if anything I would have woken up” I say, trying to run a quick check through my memory

“I am not much of a deep sleeper too” he adds. we look at each other and then at the curtain as if the woman would stroll in and laugh the shit out at us.

I stand up from the mat to leave but stop by the sound of his voice “I checked outside too, but she is nowhere near”

“Do you know where her farm is?” How is he supposed to know that?

He nods negatively “another thing we don't know is why she would leave for her farm by that time”

“We need to look for her or her farm - at least find a clue as to what happened to her” I say

“it could be the shadows”

“yet she didn't scream?”

“or she slept somewhere else when her coal ran out”

“Either way, we need answers, it's too late in the morning for her to yet be out” I finalize.

We step out, wandering from house to house, getting doors slammed at our faces and watching the citizens fidget just by the description of the mansion. We didn’t find any of the kids on this side of the town neither could we grasp any information relating to the mansion, family, and all – worst of all we couldn’t find the only woman that cared enough to open up to us.

What seems like hours later. I sigh in frustration, stopping my gaze on the hills at the far end and then at the rod-twisted gate I had entered from

The thing is, I had only heard that we couldn't leave this town border but we had never tried to and I am literally just realizing that getting out of this town is not just the major issue since there is a lot of lands and an ocean between us and any signs of life.

“Whatever you are thinking, don't do it” Tony’s deep voice snaps me right out of my thoughts, and I notice I was staring at the gate. I chuckle nervously turning my gaze in his direction. He wasn’t looking at me anymore so I followed his gaze to a field some miles from the gate “that looks like a farm right?” He asks

I squeeze my face, using my hands to cast a shadow on my eyes – yet again the trauma of not taking the freaking black sunglasses. “I think so” I respond, the plants were arranged in rolls each plant to a section – nature cannot pull that. I almost add

We started walking towards the farm “She dropped it there” Tony's voice interrupts me. I follow his pointed finger to the floor. The woman's coal tin is on the floor and the coal inside had splashed all over the floor, a string of fading smoke erupts from a few clustered together.

The ones scattered were black and cool enough to be fisted into my hands. The woman must have dropped them, if I was a detective I might be able to tell how long the burning coal was left. Though it was long enough for them to stop burning but then there is this aspect of the night breeze and also the gust the shadows operate with.

“This is just outside the farm” Tony says slightly hitting the tin with his boots and it rolls over spilling more coal to the floor. A few feet away was a bunch of wood cut into fist-sized cubes and arranged like a mini hill beside a huge pot which was obviously cooking something from the flames that oozed out of the pit the pot rested on.

The gate was nowhere near - wait a minute, had we walked that long? I chuckled in disbelief watching Tony climb the cluster of sand beside the pot to get a glimpse. He peeps for some minutes, probably trying to figure out what the contents are

“the charcoal is made here” a voice with an accent says from behind, another woman ridden with age just like the rest of them - did this shadow thing really have a thing for youth? Speaking of youths, those kids must have not returned.

Dragging air into my lungs and then out I turn to the woman who walks past me before I fully turned so I watch her slowly head to the pot. “we leave the coal at the tunnel just by the hotel before sundown so you can get some there” the woman forces a smile but her eyes couldn't hide the pity ridden in them.

“do you know if the shadows attacked last night?” Tony attempt to step down from the sand “we are looking for someone, old” he says

The woman cackles and pauses “we are all old” she started humming something and looks back at us for a long minute then sighs “I didn't hear anything, and the shadows don't take the old”

“Maybe they were worried she had so much information to dispense?” I thought aloud.

The woman suppresses a laugh, “demons do not think like that. let the wood cook and get it at the tunnel later” after her last word she turns and strolls away from us into the farm still humming whatever it is she was humming.

I roll my eyes and squat, feeling the coal that spilled from the tin as if it was going to tell me where the woman was.

“We could have asked her about the mansion, she seemed friendly… unlike every single person in this village,” I say with regret. Looking up at Tony struggling to get down without a nasty scratch

“do you know one place the shadows will keep anyone they take?” I continue, watching him dust himself with his shirt. I rise slowly fixing my gaze on him – there is only one place the shadows are likely to take their captive and it is the very mansion at the outskirts

“Bella don't - we barely survived” Tony is nodding negatively

“and we will if we have enough burning coal” I continue

“We don’t know a thing about those things and how exactly they work, I am not game for going there again unless we go back and develop an actual plan”

he finalizes

I raise my brows but he waves me off with a tired eye roll releasing a breath so I drop them slowly – I cannot go there alone either way. But then –

“it wasn't the shadows!” I gasp after the words slip right out of my thoughts confusing Tony

“Why would you – the coal tin is still intact and oozing smoke” his face lit up

“And with the force of their wind, that is not possible”

The sound of a branch snap from behind pulls our attention behind me, the grass moves and someone launches out, breaking into a sprint and disappearing into the farm. Tony sprints after the runner and without thinking I chase after them.

The runner gave us a good chase into the cluster of tall trees swiftly leaping over protruded roots and his feet thud the moist soil so fast. surprisingly Tony moves with the same energy and I am left struggling to meet up before my aching lungs give up

Minutes later we are in another section of the farm, with weak plants scattered around a few huge trees that didn’t cover much of the sun. The runner sprints faster, raising loose earth from the friction between his old-looking sandals and the farm’s dark soil

I am gasping and trying to pick up my speed too but my efforts fizzle away because my legs are now slow and heavy.

Tony doesn't stop until I could barely see him – that’s it, I give up! I stop running, crashing on my knees and panting. I manage to find a tree large enough to carry my weight, hopefully, I didn’t have to crawl much.

I lean on the trunk and close my eyes. My lungs ached and drew gulps of air and yet I still could barely see clearly.

From the body, that person was young and if the shadows didn't take the woman then someone must have and the convenience of the fact that he had to be listening to us at that time explains it all. He took her, whoever it was.

The rustling of the leaves from behind wakes me. In response, I throw myself on my knee and turn around on all fours. With no more noise, I thrust myself to my feet still observing the tiny overgrown weed behind the trunk I rested on “Who is there?” The grasses is still, the shrill silence of the hot afternoon and the calm brush of warm breeze remains. I sigh dropping my head on my palms, how long was I asleep? Tony had followed the runner and now I have no clue where he might be – my stomach rumbles, reminding me that I haven't eaten since this morning and the day seems to be far spent. I grunt after the repeated rumblings, normally I would go for a day without food but that was only when I have a function to attend to and nice cloth that I wouldn’t want my body to destroy. ‘A function could also mean going to surprise your cheating boyfriend on his birthday with a cake nobody ate’ I say to myself “Very much craving that cake right now” with a heavy breath, I mumble squeezing my

Dragging a breath into my lungs I muster the courage I needed. “Who are you?” I manage a question, trying to swallow the air that had clogged my throat quietly enough and blinking away the last bit of fear in my eyes “None of your business, why are you following me?” His young not so deep voice stirs up confidence in me, the first tick of safety; he is probably a few years older, if not a year. but then asking a question after a sly answer is just the game I am ready to play “none of your business, why did you kill that woman?” well, confidence – yes but I still need to caution my curiosity, apart from letting him know I saw him even though I feel he already knows, I am still indicating interest in it. The stomach-ripping silence between us sweeps me into a deep level of discomfort that I couldn’t keep my hands still so he doesn’t see they were trembling “I arrived in this town a few days ago and I met some friends, we are looking for a way to save the village from the haunting sha

Hurried footsteps and panting is all the old villagers that stuck their head from their house would see – that explain their judgmental look at me, added to the fact that I had pretty much knocked on most of their doors just this morning. They must pity the shit out of me, that thought alone make me all the sicker. So I pause for a minute to steady my breath before resuming my search I had not gone to the hotel because my gut suggested that Tony would be out looking for me and going to the hotel would be a waste of time so I stall around the forest shouting his name and slowly angling towards the hotel – the sun won’t stay up forever though so I need to hurry back eventually The cold breeze brush against my skin which had lost its smoothness since I arrived in this forsaken town and my body hair stand out with goose-bumps roughening my skin all the more from the thought of the dark clouds hovering around me – come to think of it, I keep pushing that to the back of my mind. Thelma is pacing from one end of her room to the other end. one hand is crossed above her stomach and the other wiggling with her chin. Rose is covered in a blanket on her bed shaking from sobs and Olivia is sitting by her side with clothes wounded around her wrist and another on her other arm, she is tapping Rose on her shoulder Tony is sitting on the side table with his face buried in his arms. He hums a breath every long minute and I seem to be the only one with the slightest calm and that is why I should start acting because my sanity is a slip away from going down the drain “We need to gather the villagers” I say, grabbing their attention. my words seem to upset everyone because they all look at me like I am the very shadows and they want to gut me out “They wouldn’t even talk to us and now you want them to meet with you” Tony protested “Normally, only the younger ones were the target but for some reason, they are involving the old ones in it too. It must have stirred fear in

“The only way we can make the villagers trust us is to convince them that we can protect them,” I say Thelma is at one end, she had tossed her phone after it tripped off and Rose is looking out the window, for some reason, she seems to have accepted her fate and is now trying to be useful to us for a change I haven’t spoken to Olivia since our little fallout and she seems to prefer it because she would rather stare at her nails than glance at me even for a second. Tony is not with us, he had left to get more coal from the tunnel “You are right” Thelma snaps her words at me and smiles dryly. “We need to assure them that we can protect them” “And the only way for us to do that is to be on standby for an attack with our deodorant sprays and a lighter. Tony used it to save me” that was clever by the way and I must have forgotten to give him the accolade “I don’t use sprays,” Olivia says still avoiding my eyes so she looks at Rose instead and I almost laugh “Good thing, I use two diff

The dark night is immediately upon us. It might sound stupid but we left the hotel without coal, the grand reason was that we didn’t want the shadows to notice us before we attacked. The gust can be strong enough to rip us off our balance or slam us somewhere. But the problem was if they traveled in darkness, wouldn’t it be beneficial to them that we are in darkness? The sudden wild breeze answers my question and I panic “Don’t you think we are playing right into their hands by walking in darkness?” I ask “Who had the stupid idea and how the hell did we agree to it?” Tony yells out the very words I kept swallowing. Rose clears her throat and I breathe aloud. Why are we letting Rose play us into our own death? “Let us get fire, that hut is the closest” Thelma suggests, she had already moved towards the hut without waiting for our response “I only said we shouldn’t move with it because I noticed that the shadows travel with darkness and if we carry light around, they would avoid us”

After all the blurry incidents of last night, I am not surprised I slept in my attire, what I am surprised about was where I had slept. The light from the morning sun pierces through my lids and I squeeze my face to control the uncomfortable inflow of bright light. I put my hands over my eyes and open them, Tony’s arms are crossed over my chest and I can feel his moving chest from under my head I sit up and look around, we are not in the hotel! I tap tony on his shoulder and he yawns himself awake “where are we?” I asked, jittery by the situation I just woke up to. He hums in response and yawns again, running his hand through his hair, and then his eyes clear, he squats up and looks around “We were looking for your lighter,” he says searching through his pocket, then he slips it out “we found it, at least that one was not a dream” he jokes I am still looking at him, lost for words, he clicks his tongue and continues “we were too tired but I didn’t know we would end up asleep in th

“Bella, I need to show you something… both of you” Willow gestures at Tony “that’s the only way you guys will trust what I am saying” “he has a point, since we don’t believe him, he might as well prove himself right” I say The villagers have settled in the reception, so we went back upstairs this time to my room so we can have a private time to discuss if we should trust Willow or not “you said you saw him kill that woman Bella” Tony says – shit.. I did say that indirectly since I was too panicked to explain better when we met again and that has led to this misunderstanding Truth is, I did felt he killed her earlier but after meeting him in the hut and thinking about it, he wasn’t with anything that he could have given her. She just convulsed out of the blue and that is why I wanted him on my side. But I hadn’t updated Tony yet “yes I did, but I didn’t really see him give her something that day. I was just confused because she looked healthy right before” I say almost stammering
