There is no sound on the field that is usually filled with a lot of military shouts. The only thing that can be heard was the sound of the wind blowing. Every soldier on the field is holding their breath, their eyes keep looking at one particular soldier that is just standing on the field. He is holding a machine gun with a firm posture, his eyes are still wandering around, trying to find the strategic spot for the battle.
His name is Devin, a veteran war soldier from the Northern Alliance. However, despite being called a veteran, he is still 15 years old. He officially joined the world-war 3 when he was 10 years old because of the Northern’s loss against the Western Country.
The first time he came to the battlefield, he surprised everyone by assassinating almost every enemy that he met and rescued the intelligent unit from being backstabbed by catching a traitor in that unit. After that moment, the world has known him as ‘the shadow assassin’ for his ability to assassinate quickly in the middle of the battlefield without everyone noticing his presence.
After his first battle, the Northern military realized Devin’s worth and decided to nurture Devin as a perfect soldier. He was trained in several martial arts, different kinds of weapons, assassination techniques, and a lot of survival training to turn him into a perfect soldier. The result was shown on the battlefield when he massacred the enemy’s base and reclaim several important cities that fall to the enemy like Berlin, Vienna, and Prague.
His contribution was acknowledged by the higher-ups, and he was promoted to the captain position and had his own squad at 13-year-old, making him the youngest captain in history.
After his promotion, he keeps up his good work for the Northern Alliance by claiming a lot of areas in the continent that used to be called Europe in the past. When there was only Britain remaining for the Western Continent in Europe. The Northern’s higher-ups were very confident that after they conquer Britain, they will just have to wait for the surrender of Western.
However, the attack on Britain that should be easy turned out to be a disaster. The night before the battle, the Northern soldier’s camp in Bray-Dunes, the nearest city from Britain, received a sudden attack from the air. But that was not an ordinary air force. The fire from that attack was spread through the entire camp within a minute, and before anyone at the camp realized what happened, all of them were burnt alive. That disaster cost the Northern 5000 soldiers.
After that event, the unusual aerial attack from the Western side is not over. The land that Devin conquered in the past was lost once again to the Western’s hand. And just like the first time, they were all burned with no survivor left behind. The land of French, Belgium, and the Netherland were lost just from the unknown attack.
Finally, the Northern received intel about the unknown attack. It came from the lone survivor of the attack in the land of Luxemburg. Honestly, he actually died from that attack. However, he managed to run to the Northern base in the land of Switzerland just before he dies. The corpse was enough for the military to extract the information before he dies.
The Northern combined the last memory of the survivor with virtual reality to simulate the unknown weapon and to find how to fight it. However, the method was very dangerous because if the one who did the simulation test die in the simulation, he will also die in the real world. That is why the Northern military recalled back their best soldier, Devin, to do the simulation.
-- Back to the story –
The silence in the field is finally broken when the sound of a blown whistle came through his ears. Devin lies down quickly and tried to find a mound to take cover.
A moment later, a huge creature is coming from the earth. It resembles a lion in the forepart, a goat in the middle, and a dragon behind. A chimera, one of the most dangerous beasts in the Greek mythological story.
Every people who knew a bit about the legend of chimera paled, knowing that the battle will be a dangerous one for Devin. Chimera may not be the most dangerous beast in the myth, but its power is not something any human can deal with easily. It can swim, it can fly, its speed is untraceable by ordinary eyes, and the most dangerous thing is it can breathe fire.
‘If the simulation is accurate, the unknown attack is probably coming from this beast.’ Devin thought
Devin is holding his breath now, waiting for the opportunity. He is a veteran, so he had a few experiences facing an unexpected situations. While chimera is definitely on the top of his list, he is definitely not going to be overwhelmed by it. He quickly calmed himself down and started to dig into his memory to find what is its weakness.
Chimera’s weakness is simple. It is the goat part of its body, which is the only part that can feel pain and have the slowest regeneration ability. However, that part is also the strongest point of Chimera, because it has an intelligence that is very similar to humans. A myth from Athens said, let a chimera walk around the human world for just one month, and the goat part will make the chimera adapt to how humans fight.
Devin knows he needs a diversion for the lion and dragon part of its body. Their reflex and instinct to protect the goat part are very high, so a normal diversion will not work. Therefore, he covered his eyes with dark g****e and throw a flash-bang from his bag to the dragon side. One of the best ways to deal with an unknown enemy is to steal his vision.
However, before Devin can react, the dragon part surprisingly makes a quick decision by twisting its body to cover the goat part.
Not giving the beast time to recover, Devin raised his machine gun and aimed it at the goat. Unfortunately, the dragon part has already twisted its body to cover the goat.
‘So the dragon is responsible for the goat’s protection. At least it confirms its weakness now.’
Devin immediately threw his machine gun and rushed to the beast at a high speed. The lion part is growling at Devin’s sudden movement. Unfortunately for the beast, before the lion part can react, Devin is ready to attack.
He rolled in front of the beast, and throw a high kick to the lion’s jaw, shaking the beast’s balance. That attack threw the dragon part out off guard, creating an opening for Devin to attack the goat. Within a second, he draws a pistol from his belt and shot the goat’s part.
‘BANG!! BANG!! BANG!!!’
Before the beast realized, three bullets have already pierced the goat’s head. All three heads in the beast's body suddenly shrieked, and in the next moment, the beast loses its strength and disappears from the field.
After a moment of silence,
“WOAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!” The field was filled with a lot of shouts coming from the soldiers who watched the battle from the start.
“Did you see that? He is very fast!” Shouted one of the soldiers.
“I cannot follow captain Devin’s movement at all! Truly worthy of captain!” Said another.
“That’s captain Devin, our Northern’s pride!!” Added another one.
The excited shouts from the soldiers can be heard for a moment before one particular soldier enters the field.
“Soldier Devin! Report to my office, now!” He is Atalanta, the general of the Northern military.
“Yes, Sir!”
In General Atalanta’s office
Unlike all of the soldiers in the field, the situation in General Atalanta’s office is very tense. The higher-ups who watched Devin’s battle know the gravity of this situation. A mythical beast who can only be heard in a legend now appeared as their enemy. The situation is not good for them.
“What a mess..” One of the Lieutenant General sighed while rubbing his forehead.
“Is this possible that the simulation is wrong?” Ask another Lieutenant General to the head of the technology division. The one who was asked just nodded.
“It is possible because of several factors. This simulation is created based on people’s last memory before he dies. It is usually used by the police to create a hypothesis for a murder case. However, the last memory before people dies usually got biased by fear of death, so it can be more exaggerated than the reality itself.” This answer makes a few people release a relieved sigh.
“However, the fact that there is a mythical beast that should not exist in the hand of our enemy will be a big problem for us. We have to wait for General Atalanta and Captain Devin’s assessment to know how troublesome our problem is right now.”
Not long after the last Lieutenant General gives his opinion, all of the higher-ups in the room can hear the door open, revealing captain Devin and General Atalanta in front of them. Everyone immediately stands up and gives a salute to the general.
“Give me a brief report on what have you discussed after watching Devin’s battle.” General Atalanta gives a command to one of his Lieutenant.
“Yes, Sir!” After hearing the report, General Atalanta just hummed and turn his gaze to Devin.
“Devin, you are the one who did the simulation. What do you think about our condition?” After having a moment to think, Devin gives his opinion.
“Sir, I am afraid that this will be the opposite of the Lieutenant’s opinion. I am a bit familiar with the simulation because of several spy cases in the military. Except for a poisonous death, the last memory that we use to simulate usually turned out to be more violent because it was people’s last moment. The focus on the memory will be the attack that got them killed.
However, in the last simulation, you see for yourself that the beast is just looking at me without malicious intention. That means the people that we use for the simulation did not die because of the beast. Moreover, the beast didn’t use its famous fire attack, so we still didn’t have any intelligence for the unknown attack. Is it really from the beast or does Britain have another weapon that they used against us?
And the most important thing is, if they have one mythical beast in their military, what is the chance that they or another country have a similar or worse, more dangerous beast in their rank? So I have to say our position is not very good right now.”
After hearing what Devin said, the atmosphere in the room is basically going down. Devin can see the grim expression on General Atalanta’s face, and he knows his general is aware of this situation.
“Thank you, Captain Devin, you are dismissed for now.” Devin gives his last salute before leaving the room. After closing the door, he sighs and muttered,
“What a mess indeed..”
-- Devin PoV -- It has been just 15 minutes since I leave General Atalanta’s office, and I am just sitting on the bus. It has been a long time for me to be in the Northern Alliance's capital city, Moskva. The last time I have been here was when I got the promotion to captain in the military. After that, I spent almost all my time with my squad, either training or going to the battlefield. This time, however, I decided to ask for a break from the military. I didn’t have a plan to spend my rare holiday in this city. Instead, it is Khimki, a small city in the north of Moskva that I will go to right now. While Khimki is just a small city without anything interesting to attract visitors, this city is my hometown, the place where I grew up and honed myself to be the strong person I became right now. After the bus reached the nearest stop in the city, I walked for about 10 minutes before reaching a small old house. The house itself is just an ordinary building without anything fancy. The
His name is Andra. He is still 15 years old, just like me. However, unlike me who is tall and muscular, Andra has a very ordinary appearance. The only unusual thing about him is his round glasses and messy hair. If you didn’t know anything about him, you will assume that he is just an ordinary boy without anything special. The truth is, he chooses to have a very ordinary appearance to hide the fact that he is a trained spy and assassin from the South Region called Malaya. He is also the one who teaches me how to handle a lot of daily life things that can be used as weapons, from a simple kitchen knife to a handgun. He was at the orphanage one year earlier than me. He was found by Lieutenant Maxim, Mama’s late husband and our father, in the street near the military base in Moskva. At first, he acted as a street child to get the attention and sympathy of the higher-ups in the military. A few years ago, when the Northern Alliance was still not formed, a street child trying to get the
“What happened? And where the hell are we?” This question seems to wake me up from my shock. I try to keep my breath steady and calm. When I am looking around, I got confused because instead of the orphanage, I am now in the middle of a forest. But after thinking about what happened before, I start to curse around. “DAMN! Did we just get absorbed by a bloody book?! How the hell is that possible?!” “It seems so.” Andra just shrugged at my rant. I feel a sudden urge to smack his head. For someone who is the main reason for what happened to us, he is way too calm right now. Either he is still in shock, afraid of what will happen, or he has already calmed himself. I hope it is the latter. “So, what do you think right now?” I ask, trying to keep as calm as possible. As a soldier, I am trained to always calm down when I have to face an unexpected event, and while this is definitely at the top-notch of my unexpected event list, I have to keep forcing myself to calm down, at least for my s
-- Sara PoV -- ‘Is she awake?’ I can hear a small whisper coming from a little girl from afar. ‘Not yet. I think it will be soon.’ Another girl, this one comes from my side, returned the question. After hearing that conversation, I started gaining consciousness. I want to groan. However, I don’t have any energy to do that. I don’t know how long I have been asleep, but by how weak my body it is right now, I can estimate the last time I eat properly was almost three days ago. Then, a memory of three days ago struck my brain like a lightning. I can remember all of the torture that I experienced for almost three days in a row. And then, a name suddenly came through my brain. ‘Aliyya!’ While I cannot remember clearly what is exactly happened three days ago, I can still remember that my sister was also kidnapped with me. Just the thought of what would the kidnappers do to my little sister in the hand of the kidnappers makes my body sweat heavily and my heart beat faster. I tried to ca
-- Devin PoV -- On the battlefield, a surprise attack is a common thing. There are a lot of cases when my enemies send a suicide attack at night. As a soldier, I trained myself to react with my instinct first and think later when the surprise attack happened, because you will need every little time you have to save yourself. I honed my instinct for almost five years to face unexpected situations like a surprise attack. So when a scream is coming from the other room, the room where we place the black robe man, I instinctively duck for a cover. I didn’t have to worry for Andra and Sara, because Andra is also trained in this kind of situation and he is closer to Sara, so he will definitely protect her. And a few seconds after the scream, our home exploded. A tremendous boom shook the building, shattered the wall, leveling our home to the ground just in a blink. ‘Cosma! Nina! Mama!’ My mind is screaming, begging for me to move quickly to find them. After looking around and seeing Andr
Okay, it is official now. This day is the worst day ever. From the destruction of our home to Mama’s death, I thought this day could not be any worse. But I am definitely wrong. Here, in a cave, the source of our problem talked about Andra’s death casually, like it is something that happened daily. I really want to slap her face right now. However, much to my disappointment, I took a deep breath and tried to control my emotion. It will be no good to lose my calm right now, especially to the only source of our information. After I get a bit calmer, I look at him coldly and said, “Explain, now.” She gulped a little bit. “As I have already told you before, I have a suspicion that Andra is a mage. Do you remember about it?” I nodded. “Well, the book that he held confirms my suspicion. That is Blessing of Magus right?” I keep silent, not confirming or denying her accusation. “You don’t need to tell me anything, because I know what the book is. It also answered why Andra could use magu
“Okay, let me get this straight. So both of you are able to read the book that even Andra’s program could not decipher, and somehow it contains information about Andra’s condition. Is that right?” The twins nodded while looking at me cautiously, as if afraid that I will not believe them. I just sighed, trying to keep my sanity in this complicated situation. “So, what can you tell me?” They looked surprised, and I cannot help but feel a bit hurt at their distrust of me. “Look, I can guess what both of you probably think right now. You are wondering, why do I believe your word that seems irrational, right?” They nodded. “To be honest, I am tired of all of this superpower stuff that Sara explained, and I don’t know what to believe. But I know for a fact that I can always rely on both of you and Andra, so you can tell me whatever ridiculous thing you read, and I will still believe in you. After all, family always sticks together, right?” They lowered their head, ashamed of their though
“So, do you have a lead to Amasia?” Sara didn’t give me an immediate answer. Instead, she just stared at me with calculating eyes, trying to figure out if I can really back my threat up or not. ‘She didn’t believe my threat but decided to take it slow and carefully. Good. At least she will not do anything reckless that can be dangerous.’ I nodded, pleased with her reaction. After our little ‘throwing threat’ session, Sara is looking at me and the twin’s room cautiously. She may not believe my threat, considering she didn’t tell me anything important about mage, so she probably thinks I am still in the dark. But by the way, I throw my threat full of confidence and calmness, it gives her a little doubt about it. This is the real purpose of my threat, to make her think about it carefully, so it will give the twins time to learn anything from Blessing of Magus and confirm what she has already explained. I still don’t want to think about what I would do if she lied to me. I know it is
“What the hell is going on here, Lad?” I feel relieved when I hear Sarfak’s voice, then give him a brief explanation as fast as possible. “You really cannot help but keep getting into trouble aren’t you?” He muttered sarcastically. I want to protest because it is really not my fault that trouble keeps coming to me, but decided to shut my mouth and wait for him “I don’t really know anything about healing, but I know someone that mastered dryad healing magic in my village. She will know what to do about them.” “How far is your village from here?” I asked seriously. He glanced at the little girl who is looking at us nervously and the unconscious boy and replied, “If we move fast like when we first met and didn’t meet any trouble, one hour is enough to get there.” I know from his subtle glance what he really wants to say. If we move like when we chase down by the gorilla for the first time, we will arrive at Sarfak's village in one hour. But we can’t do that with the girl with us. “I
“So, if you can do that earth trick before? Why did you need my help? I can think of several ways of how to beat that gorilla with your trick.” I asked Sarfak who is still lying on the ground. He is still breathing furiously, and there are traces of blood on the corner of his mouth. “My trick -as you can say- is the application of magus manipulation from our tribe, and it is not something that I can do it freely for now. I am still an apprentice after all. Once I am accepted to be a dwarf warrior and get access to our library, I can learn a lot of things for the magus user test to get a master to teach me.” He said with passionate eyes. “What is the difference between apprentice and master?” He shakes his head at my question. “It is almost like comparing heaven to earth. Apprentices are people who learned the basics of magus manipulation in our academy, and once they graduated, they will have to pass this rite of passage to become the warrior. This is the stage between apprentice an
“So, Sarfak, what can you tell me about the dwarf tribe?” I asked, trying to make conversation as we walked around trying to trace the gorilla’s whereabouts. “Well, you are a stranger, so I cannot give you any detailed information. I will give you the general one though. We are a warrior tribe that is tasked by God to protect nature. From what, at first we didn’t know. But everything changed when we met humans for the first time, more than 100 years ago. His name is Magus, I think.” I was dumbfounded at this information. “Wait, is this Magus the first one who managed to manipulate the energy inside our body?” He snorted. “Of course, he would say that to his fellow human. The truth is, the dwarf tribe and the other six tribes like elven have manipulated magus since the beginning of our world. That is why we are the ones that God gives the task to protect nature.” “Then, why did the energy name as his name?” He shakes his head at the bewildered look on my face. “Lad, it is not the
“Hhhhh…… Hhhhhh…….. Hhhhhhh………..” My breath is starting to get heavy. My clothes are wet already, full of sweat. I still don’t know how, but the last ten minutes suddenly turned out to be a disaster. The gorilla is still chasing me with an abnormal speed and agility, while the chimera is behind the gorilla, trying to catch up with us, but having a problem with the forest terrain. To make it worse, here is a strange guy that blew up my plan to avoid any confrontation with Gorilla, keep following me while keep doing something idiot that makes the two beasts chase us. Honestly, I have managed to distract the beasts twice with my gun, shooting random beasts while running in the opposite direction. But this idiot keeps shooting his arrow at the beasts to make it turn its direction back to us. When I glared at him, he just grinned sheepishly, as if he did nothing wrong. ‘Urgh.. When this is over, I will beat this idiot to death..’ I vowed inwardly while increasing my pace to leave the go
