-- Devin PoV --
It has been just 15 minutes since I leave General Atalanta’s office, and I am just sitting on the bus. It has been a long time for me to be in the Northern Alliance's capital city, Moskva. The last time I have been here was when I got the promotion to captain in the military. After that, I spent almost all my time with my squad, either training or going to the battlefield. This time, however, I decided to ask for a break from the military.
I didn’t have a plan to spend my rare holiday in this city. Instead, it is Khimki, a small city in the north of Moskva that I will go to right now. While Khimki is just a small city without anything interesting to attract visitors, this city is my hometown, the place where I grew up and honed myself to be the strong person I became right now.
After the bus reached the nearest stop in the city, I walked for about 10 minutes before reaching a small old house. The house itself is just an ordinary building without anything fancy. The only thing that makes it different from the other building is the old plat name in front of the door.
‘Sky Orphanage’
This used to be the orphanage where I grew up before I was recruited to the military. There are a lot of orphans living here in the past. However, as time goes by, the orphanage was closed due to a lack of finances. Because of the orphanage’s policy to not send orphans to the military, we didn’t receive any government aid. So, the orphanage decided to not receive more orphans. As far as I remember, only 4 children lived here before I left, including me.
There are several times when the orphanage almost closed down due to a lack of money. That is why me and my brother, Andra, decided to work to solve the money problem.
At first, we decided that nobody will go into the military. We consider ourselves a family, so we didn’t want anyone to go to the war and die meaninglessly on the battlefield.
However, the money that came from the military is not small, so that will definitely help the orphanage. Moreover, Father explained to us the importance of the information that comes from the military. So, when I was 10 years old, I volunteered to be the person who will go into the military, not Andra.
And now, after almost five years since I left, this will be the first time I come back to my home.
I knocked on the door and waited. After a few minutes, I can hear a step from the inside. When the door opened, I smile at the one who is in front of me right now.
“Hello, Mama. I am home.” The one who I called Mama widened her eyes and cover her mouth in shock. There are small tears in her eyes. And before I can react, she already threw her arms around mine and hugged me tightly as if she is afraid that I will be gone.
“Oh my god, Devin! You are finally back! How are you? Did the military treat you well? Did you eat three times a day? Did you –” I just smile as she didn't stop babbling. She is our mama, Isabella, a 30-year-old widow that has been raising me since I was 8 years old.
The Sky Orphanage was built by her husband, a lieutenant in the military who died on the battlefield. While on paper she was just a matron, in our eyes, she is our mother by all but blood, and we will always be her children no matter what we say. That is why, seeing one of her lost children come back, she cannot help but burst into tears.
“I am okay, Mama. I am home now. Can we go inside? It is already dark now.” I muttered softly. She released her hug and wiped her tears,
“Yeah, of course! Come in! Sorry for my outburst before.” I chuckled at what she said and enter the building. The building itself doesn’t change a lot since I left 5 years ago. Only a kitchen, a dining room, two small bedrooms for the children and one bedroom for Mama, and a small spare room for the guest. The only change that I can notice is a stack of books in the dining room.
“Sorry if the house is a mess. Andra had been trying to teach Cosma and Nina about science, and both of them are really addicted to it. They have been reading about it everywhere, and they didn’t even bother to clean their mess. Honestly, those two are very different compared to both you and Andra.” She keeps grumbling about the child’s behavior. I just smile wryly at her, remembering the mess that I created was worse than this.
“It’s okay, Ma. Let me help you. Where are the other, by the way?” I sent a curious glance at the children’s room that is unusually silent. Mama looked at the clock before giving me an answer.
“They went shopping to Moskva this morning. Apparently, there is a book about Astronomy that Cosma and Nina want to learn, so Andra decided to take a day off and take the children with them. They said that they will come back before dinner, so they will probably arrive in 15 minutes.”
I just nodded at her explanation and continue cleaning the dining room. Mama has already left me and go to the kitchen. It seems like she has been making dinner before I arrived here. We continue doing our work and making a small chat for about 10 minutes before I heard a small voice from the door.
“We are home!!”
“Mama! Look at what we have here!”
Mama and I share a glance before we smile mischievously. I quickly go to the front to surprise them. There, I saw two adorable little girls with blonde hair and blue eyes running excitedly.
“Well Nina, Cosma, what is it that you have here?” Both girls didn’t realize my presence and answered my question.
“Look here Devin, we have a book about—, EH?!” Nina’s eyes widened as she realized my presence. It looks like she is the first one who noticed me.
“Devin, you are back!” The two children have already thrown themselves onto my arm and hugged me excitedly. Nina and Cosma are the twin orphans who mama’s late husband took in the battlefield.
They both are 10 years old right now, the age of the usual orphan to go to the military. However, Mama, Andra, and I have already decided to hide them so they will not go anywhere near the military. They will get permission to go wherever they want when the war is over or when they are 14 years old, so for now, they still have to be patient.
“How are you? When did you come back? Did you become a hero and save the city from the bad people? Tell us your story! We miss you soooo much!!” I laughed at their antics.
“Hahaha.. I miss you too.. I will tell you a story when you are ready to sleep. For now, we have to help Mama prepare dinner, okay?”
“Aye, Captain!” They give me a mock salute and run, giggling all around the way to the kitchen. Mama just smiles, amused at our interaction.
After a warm and lively dinner, I ask the twins a question that bugged me since their arrival.
“So, where is your brother hiding?” For as long as I remember, Andra has never missed a dinner except when he meets something that could make him excited. The twins groaned at my question and gave me an exasperated look
“Uuughh.. Andra found a foreign book when we went to the flea market today. The seller didn’t know what language the book is written in, but looking at Andra’s shining eyes, I bet it is something old and boring.”
“Yeah, he has been shutting himself up in his room, trying to read the book itself. You know him and archeology. When he meets old historical stuff, he will forget everything. I bet he didn’t realize that you are here.” I just smile hearing the rants that coming from the twins. That is one of the quirks that Andra has. He loves to collect unknown stuff from the past and always tries to understand it.
“Well, I will meet him later. Do you have anything you want to do right now?” Their eyes gleamed at my question, and they shouted,
“Teach us science!”
“Yes! We have a book about astrophysics here. Andra promised us yesterday that he will teach us today.”
“Yeah! But it seems like he forgot his promise now.” Both girls pouted remembering their brother’s promise.
“Well, where is the book? Let’s see what I can do about it.” While I am not as proficient in science as Andra, growing up with a nerd like Andra have its benefit. I can say that I am decent enough in science and technology.
After spending almost two hours teaching Nina and Cosma, I can see that they try to hide their yawn in front of me. I chuckle, amused at their effort to spend their time with me as long as possible.
“Well, it looks like both of you are tired now. Why don’t we stop this lesson today and continue tomorrow?” They groaned.
“We are not tired!”
“Yeah! We can do this for one more hour!”
“Come on Devin! Don’t be stingy!” They plead with their puppy dog eyes. Unfortunately for them, Mama has already reacted first before me.
“Don’t give your brother that eyes, ladies. You cannot hide your tired eyes from me. Your brother also needs a rest. You can continue your study tomorrow, okay?” Mama gives the twins a stern glare. They just slumped after hearing what Mama said.
“Yes, Mama.”
“Good girls. Don’t forget to brush your teeth before sleep.”
“Okay. Good night, Mama. Good Night Devin. We love you.”
“Good children, they are.” I muttered after the twins left the room. Mama just nodded, agreeing with what I said.
“So Devin, what is your plan now?” Mama looked at me curiously.
“I don’t know. The military is not in a good condition, so I will probably be here only for 2-3 days. I have no plan for the next few days. Maybe I will just spend the day with the twins, Andra, and you. Like the old days, right?” I smile at Mama. Her eyes softened a bit after I mentioned our old days together.
“Well, speaking of Andra, have you already seen him?”
“The twins said that he found a good old book to decipher. You know him, Mama. He will not rest until he solves it.” Mama just chuckled at that.
“Well, what are you waiting for? Go to your room and meet him. I swear that boy is getting worse every time he found a good mystery. Just remind him to sleep, okay.”
“Okay, Mama. I will go now. Good night, I love you.”
“I love you too.” I smile and go to Andra’s room. Well, technically, it is my room too, considering we slept together for almost 5 years before I joined the military. I opened the door slowly, afraid of disturbing Andra’s work.
However, I didn’t see him working at all. Instead, he just sitting in a lotus position with his eyes closed. It seems like he is meditating right now, I thought. After a minute of silence, he opened his eyes and smile at me softly,
“Welcome home, Brother.”
His name is Andra. He is still 15 years old, just like me. However, unlike me who is tall and muscular, Andra has a very ordinary appearance. The only unusual thing about him is his round glasses and messy hair. If you didn’t know anything about him, you will assume that he is just an ordinary boy without anything special. The truth is, he chooses to have a very ordinary appearance to hide the fact that he is a trained spy and assassin from the South Region called Malaya. He is also the one who teaches me how to handle a lot of daily life things that can be used as weapons, from a simple kitchen knife to a handgun. He was at the orphanage one year earlier than me. He was found by Lieutenant Maxim, Mama’s late husband and our father, in the street near the military base in Moskva. At first, he acted as a street child to get the attention and sympathy of the higher-ups in the military. A few years ago, when the Northern Alliance was still not formed, a street child trying to get the
“What happened? And where the hell are we?” This question seems to wake me up from my shock. I try to keep my breath steady and calm. When I am looking around, I got confused because instead of the orphanage, I am now in the middle of a forest. But after thinking about what happened before, I start to curse around. “DAMN! Did we just get absorbed by a bloody book?! How the hell is that possible?!” “It seems so.” Andra just shrugged at my rant. I feel a sudden urge to smack his head. For someone who is the main reason for what happened to us, he is way too calm right now. Either he is still in shock, afraid of what will happen, or he has already calmed himself. I hope it is the latter. “So, what do you think right now?” I ask, trying to keep as calm as possible. As a soldier, I am trained to always calm down when I have to face an unexpected event, and while this is definitely at the top-notch of my unexpected event list, I have to keep forcing myself to calm down, at least for my s
-- Sara PoV -- ‘Is she awake?’ I can hear a small whisper coming from a little girl from afar. ‘Not yet. I think it will be soon.’ Another girl, this one comes from my side, returned the question. After hearing that conversation, I started gaining consciousness. I want to groan. However, I don’t have any energy to do that. I don’t know how long I have been asleep, but by how weak my body it is right now, I can estimate the last time I eat properly was almost three days ago. Then, a memory of three days ago struck my brain like a lightning. I can remember all of the torture that I experienced for almost three days in a row. And then, a name suddenly came through my brain. ‘Aliyya!’ While I cannot remember clearly what is exactly happened three days ago, I can still remember that my sister was also kidnapped with me. Just the thought of what would the kidnappers do to my little sister in the hand of the kidnappers makes my body sweat heavily and my heart beat faster. I tried to ca
-- Devin PoV -- On the battlefield, a surprise attack is a common thing. There are a lot of cases when my enemies send a suicide attack at night. As a soldier, I trained myself to react with my instinct first and think later when the surprise attack happened, because you will need every little time you have to save yourself. I honed my instinct for almost five years to face unexpected situations like a surprise attack. So when a scream is coming from the other room, the room where we place the black robe man, I instinctively duck for a cover. I didn’t have to worry for Andra and Sara, because Andra is also trained in this kind of situation and he is closer to Sara, so he will definitely protect her. And a few seconds after the scream, our home exploded. A tremendous boom shook the building, shattered the wall, leveling our home to the ground just in a blink. ‘Cosma! Nina! Mama!’ My mind is screaming, begging for me to move quickly to find them. After looking around and seeing Andr
Okay, it is official now. This day is the worst day ever. From the destruction of our home to Mama’s death, I thought this day could not be any worse. But I am definitely wrong. Here, in a cave, the source of our problem talked about Andra’s death casually, like it is something that happened daily. I really want to slap her face right now. However, much to my disappointment, I took a deep breath and tried to control my emotion. It will be no good to lose my calm right now, especially to the only source of our information. After I get a bit calmer, I look at him coldly and said, “Explain, now.” She gulped a little bit. “As I have already told you before, I have a suspicion that Andra is a mage. Do you remember about it?” I nodded. “Well, the book that he held confirms my suspicion. That is Blessing of Magus right?” I keep silent, not confirming or denying her accusation. “You don’t need to tell me anything, because I know what the book is. It also answered why Andra could use magu
“Okay, let me get this straight. So both of you are able to read the book that even Andra’s program could not decipher, and somehow it contains information about Andra’s condition. Is that right?” The twins nodded while looking at me cautiously, as if afraid that I will not believe them. I just sighed, trying to keep my sanity in this complicated situation. “So, what can you tell me?” They looked surprised, and I cannot help but feel a bit hurt at their distrust of me. “Look, I can guess what both of you probably think right now. You are wondering, why do I believe your word that seems irrational, right?” They nodded. “To be honest, I am tired of all of this superpower stuff that Sara explained, and I don’t know what to believe. But I know for a fact that I can always rely on both of you and Andra, so you can tell me whatever ridiculous thing you read, and I will still believe in you. After all, family always sticks together, right?” They lowered their head, ashamed of their though
“So, do you have a lead to Amasia?” Sara didn’t give me an immediate answer. Instead, she just stared at me with calculating eyes, trying to figure out if I can really back my threat up or not. ‘She didn’t believe my threat but decided to take it slow and carefully. Good. At least she will not do anything reckless that can be dangerous.’ I nodded, pleased with her reaction. After our little ‘throwing threat’ session, Sara is looking at me and the twin’s room cautiously. She may not believe my threat, considering she didn’t tell me anything important about mage, so she probably thinks I am still in the dark. But by the way, I throw my threat full of confidence and calmness, it gives her a little doubt about it. This is the real purpose of my threat, to make her think about it carefully, so it will give the twins time to learn anything from Blessing of Magus and confirm what she has already explained. I still don’t want to think about what I would do if she lied to me. I know it is
“Hhhhh…… Hhhhhh…….. Hhhhhhh………..” My breath is starting to get heavy. My clothes are wet already, full of sweat. I still don’t know how, but the last ten minutes suddenly turned out to be a disaster. The gorilla is still chasing me with an abnormal speed and agility, while the chimera is behind the gorilla, trying to catch up with us, but having a problem with the forest terrain. To make it worse, here is a strange guy that blew up my plan to avoid any confrontation with Gorilla, keep following me while keep doing something idiot that makes the two beasts chase us. Honestly, I have managed to distract the beasts twice with my gun, shooting random beasts while running in the opposite direction. But this idiot keeps shooting his arrow at the beasts to make it turn its direction back to us. When I glared at him, he just grinned sheepishly, as if he did nothing wrong. ‘Urgh.. When this is over, I will beat this idiot to death..’ I vowed inwardly while increasing my pace to leave the go
“What the hell is going on here, Lad?” I feel relieved when I hear Sarfak’s voice, then give him a brief explanation as fast as possible. “You really cannot help but keep getting into trouble aren’t you?” He muttered sarcastically. I want to protest because it is really not my fault that trouble keeps coming to me, but decided to shut my mouth and wait for him “I don’t really know anything about healing, but I know someone that mastered dryad healing magic in my village. She will know what to do about them.” “How far is your village from here?” I asked seriously. He glanced at the little girl who is looking at us nervously and the unconscious boy and replied, “If we move fast like when we first met and didn’t meet any trouble, one hour is enough to get there.” I know from his subtle glance what he really wants to say. If we move like when we chase down by the gorilla for the first time, we will arrive at Sarfak's village in one hour. But we can’t do that with the girl with us. “I
“So, if you can do that earth trick before? Why did you need my help? I can think of several ways of how to beat that gorilla with your trick.” I asked Sarfak who is still lying on the ground. He is still breathing furiously, and there are traces of blood on the corner of his mouth. “My trick -as you can say- is the application of magus manipulation from our tribe, and it is not something that I can do it freely for now. I am still an apprentice after all. Once I am accepted to be a dwarf warrior and get access to our library, I can learn a lot of things for the magus user test to get a master to teach me.” He said with passionate eyes. “What is the difference between apprentice and master?” He shakes his head at my question. “It is almost like comparing heaven to earth. Apprentices are people who learned the basics of magus manipulation in our academy, and once they graduated, they will have to pass this rite of passage to become the warrior. This is the stage between apprentice an
“So, Sarfak, what can you tell me about the dwarf tribe?” I asked, trying to make conversation as we walked around trying to trace the gorilla’s whereabouts. “Well, you are a stranger, so I cannot give you any detailed information. I will give you the general one though. We are a warrior tribe that is tasked by God to protect nature. From what, at first we didn’t know. But everything changed when we met humans for the first time, more than 100 years ago. His name is Magus, I think.” I was dumbfounded at this information. “Wait, is this Magus the first one who managed to manipulate the energy inside our body?” He snorted. “Of course, he would say that to his fellow human. The truth is, the dwarf tribe and the other six tribes like elven have manipulated magus since the beginning of our world. That is why we are the ones that God gives the task to protect nature.” “Then, why did the energy name as his name?” He shakes his head at the bewildered look on my face. “Lad, it is not the
