The following morning, Richard prepared his daughter for school. Melvin said nothing apart from a good morning to his father. She was dull, paired with her pale skin from the fever last night. Looking at his daughter, a pang of pain and guilt hit him. He should never have let Cassy into the house last night. If she didn't step foot in the house, his daughter would not be heartbroken by the words her mother said about her.
After dropping Melvin to school, Richard headed to the eatery where he worked. He helped Mrs Clark with cleaning and preparing the dishes and delivered a few take aways ordered by clients. It was about noon when his cellphone rang indicating that he had an incoming call. He ignored it at first thinking that it was Cassy calling. He didn't have the strength to argue with her nor had he thought about signing the divorce papers. The phone rang again, almost immediately. Groaning, he wiped his hands clean with his working apron before slipping his hands to his pants pockets producing an old fashioned phone. He checked the caller ID and he frowned before picking it up." Hello, is this Mr Richard Williams?" A voice from the other end greeted." Yes, how may I help you?"" Your daughter collapsed in school and she has been sent to St Luke's hospital as we talk." The voice reported.Richard stumbled and almost fell but he managed to stabilise himself. His mind was in chaos as he tried to make sense of what was just said.He immediately removed the apron he was wearing before dumping it on one of the chairs. Richard stormed out, reached for his bike before making his way to the said hospital. His heart was racing, worry filling every fibre of his being." Please be safe." He murmured as he drove his bike at an alarming speed. At this point he cared less about traffic rules. He only wanted to arrive at the hospital and confirm that his daughter was fine.He didn't want to think about anything going wrong with her because that would break him and rock his world.Arriving at the hospital, he parked his car before making his way to the emergency unit.He was not new to this hospital and knew almost every corner like the back of his hand, but that's a story for another day.At the reception, he inquired about his daughter and the nurse confirmed that the little girl was undergoing tests and treatment.Left with nothing to do, Richard could only sit at the bench outside the emergency room and wait. His heart had not stopped beating loudly and as each moment passed, his worry intensified. After about an hour which felt like forever to Richard, the door to the room was opened, revealing a doctor accompanied by two nurses.Richard stepped forward, greeting the doctor before inquiring about his daughter." She has mild leukaemia and only a bone marrow transplant could help. Her health is deteriorating and the faster we perform the surgery the better." The doctor explained, his expressions serious." You have to look for a compatible donor and get the surgery fee ready." The doctor added before gently patting Richard's shoulders and walking away. After inquiry, Richard got to know that apart from looking for a donor, he would have to pay two thousand dollars for the surgery.Even if he sold everything he owned including himself, there's no way he could ever get even half of that amount. He had spent the little savings he had to buy a gift for Cassy, something that was not appreciated. Being a delivery man and a waiter, Richard earned very little and his salary could only manage him with nothing to save. That's how he lived in the past five years. The only hope to get such an amount of money was asking help from his wife's family. His wife came from a rich family and two thousand dollars was something they could produce without batting an eyelid. The Parkerfamily never liked him and always sought for any chance to humiliate him.To them, he was a useless piece of trash that didn't deserve to breathe the same air with them.Ever since he married Cassy, he became a target of their bullying simply because he was poor and crippled.Richard always chose to ignore their insults and sarcastic remarks directed to him. He would avoid coming across them but now, he could only result in begging for their help to save his daughter. His daughter's life was in the line here and he was ready to do anything just so she could be treated. He didn't care what they would say to him or gbe humiliation he would face. For the sake of his daughter, he could do anything.Richard walked to the ward where his daughter was laying. Her skin was even more pale than it was in the morning. He sat beside her sleeping figure as he watched her sleep peacefully. After accompanying his daughter for almost an hour, he left the room and made his way to the parking lot.He drove straight to the Parker's Manor which was located in one of the wealthy residential areas in Los Angeles. The guards at the gate stopped him, stating that he didn't have permission to step foot into the Parker Manor." I am Cassy's husband and I want to talk to my wife about something important." Richard tried to explain to the guards who in turn looked at him with disdain." Whoever you are doesn't matter. What matters is you are not allowed to step foot through that gate." The guards were adamant and still refused to let him in.Richard was about to produce his phone to call Cassy when her car stopped right at the gate. She stepped down before walking to the guards and her good for nothing husband." What's going on here? And what the hell are you doing here?" Cassy asked, her last question directed to Richard.Richard was about to reply when the guard beat him to it." This man claims to be your husband and has been harassing us to open the gate for him." He said, pointing his fingers at Richard accusingly.Richard pursed his lips as his gaze remained fixated on Cassy." You can return to your posts,I'll take it over from here." Cassy said, dismissing the guards before her eyes landed on Richard who had not uttered a word since she arrived." What do you want? I thought I made myself clear that you are not to show your pathetic face to me? What are you doing here? Do you want to anger my mother to death?" Cassy asked, her expressions not so pleasant." I came to see you. Our daughter is sick and needs surgery." Richard reported only to get a scoff from Cassy." I am not a doctor so why are you telling me? " Cassy asked. " Let me guess, you want me to fork out money and pay for her surgery?" Cassy added, her voice laced with mockery.Richard nodded, afterall, that's why he was here in the first place. To ask Cassy and get family for help in saving his daughter's life." Why do you think I will help you?" Cassy asked condescendingly.Yes, why did he even think she would help him?He knew she hated his daughter so why would she extend an Olive hand and help Melvin? But Richard still believed that there was some humanity left in her and that she would not watch their daughter die.Richard said nothing, he only pursed his lips." I'll help you but with a condition " Cassy started, her face straight. No emotion could be seen on her face." What is it?" Richard asked, although he could already guess what the condition was, he still found himself asking." Sign the divorce papers."Richard smiled faintly. At the end, she could not wait to kick him and his daughter away from her life.He didn't need to think about what his answer would be. He would choose his daughter in a heartbeat. He finally realised that there was no longer Cassy and him anymore and that only his daughter could stick to him no matter what. She was his priority." Alright, I'll sign the divorce papers. Make sure to wire the money to the hospital immediately." Richard said, turned around, climbed his bike and went home. The divorce papers will be delivered to him the following day and he will sign it as long as his daughter can get the treatment she needs. He no longer saw the need to fight for an already wrecked ship. Since she wanted them out of her life, he will take his daughter away after she is treated.Richard arrived at his neighbourhood and parked his bike then made his way to his house. When he touched the lock of his house, he felt something was amiss. He was immediately on alert as
The following morning, a man dressed in a suit delivered a parcel to Richard. He identified him as one of the bodyguards of the Parker family. After collecting it, he walked to his bedroom and opened the parcel. Inside it was the divorce papers and without reading, he signed them. Richard didn't need to read anything, he had already made up his mind to cut ties with Cassy He didn't need to read to know that Cassy would not include any clause about the child, if anything, she would state that the two of them disappear from her life. She didn't need to say that again, he would get lost and start a new life with his daughter far away from Cassy and the Parker family. After signing the papers, he carried them and made his way to the hospital. He found his daughter still asleep and the doctor said that they induced her with a drug to keep her asleep. She was weak and in pain and no painkiller seemed to work on her." Mr Williams, you have to hurry up. We don't have time to wait. Your dau
Richard picked himself up and staggered towards the gate. The old lady had even ordered his bike be confiscated. Now, he had nothing to even take him back to his daughter. When he thought about his daughter and how the doctor informed him that her life was in danger,a lone tear escaped his eyes.He could not believe that Cassy would do that to him, to their daughter. She was her blood and flesh for crying out loud and even if she didn't want to see Melvin and him around her, she could have at least tried saving the little girl's life. His poor daughter, what wrong did she do to be born by such a heartless woman? What did he even see in that woman in the first place? Richard could not help but ask himself. He had to admit though that the Cassy he met and fell in love with five years ago was different from the woman he saw a minute ago. She completely changed. What changed her? He didn't know and at this point he didn't want to know anymore. Since they have already severed ties with he
Three hours later, the green light at the operation room was switched off indicating the surgery just came to an end. Richard, who had been standing anxiously outside the room, walked to the doctor once the door was opened." Doctor, how is my daughter now?" His voice was on edge and you could feel that he was worried. The doctor smiled at him." Don't worry, the surgery was a success. We will have to keep her here for a few more days to observe how she responds to the transplant." He replied before walking away." Thank you Doctor Smith for coming here with the shortest notice." Michael said, extending his arm to the doctor who shook it." Anything for my old man. I presume the little angel is the granddaughter of Drake?" Doctor Smith asked and Michael nodded. After bidding goodbye to the doctor, Michael made his way to the room where the little girl was wheeled to. Richard was seated next to her bed, clutching on her little frail hands like she was the only air he needed to breathe.
9. "Brother! Brother! I missed you so much! Where have you been? You left me alone to deal with father and... Oh my God! Is this my niece?" Asher asked as he went to pick Melvin. "Don't touch my daughter. I don't want her to wake up and get scared by your ugly face," Richard said as he held Melvin well in his arms. "Come on brother. I have held it all down for you and the least I deserve is to hold my niece. Bring her here," Ash added as he went to take the child who was peacefully sleeping. "Be careful," Richard said as he handed the child carefully to his little brother. "Why is Asher so childish? You still spoil him?" Richard asked Michael who was walking beside him towards the GMC-Hummer MV that was waiting for them with its doors open. "Young master, who exactly spoiled second young master if not you? He is always your baby, isn't he?" Michael asked and Richard scoffed. They had just landed in Washington DC Airport and we're on their way to the mansion. Asher and Richard
10. "So, what you are saying is the Dragon Empire isn't willing to collaborate with us?" A man seated opposite Richard asked. They were in Grand Hotel in the heart of Washington. This man, Brutus Bane, was the leader and some heir of the Lion House. They were among the top tier families in DC and they really wanted to join hands together with the Armstrong family especially after Richard came back. "Listen, I have explained this so many times but since you seem to be hard of understanding, I will explain it again. The Dragon Empire isn't involved in dark business anymore. I want to make sure that we are in the clear and that is why I am doing away with anything that is illegal. But you, the Lions, are as dirty as it gets. So, that's why, I, Zeus, can't partner with you," Richard said slowly as if he was educating a child on the basics of the alphabet. "Does your father know this?" Brutus asked now losing his patience. "Wanna try to see if he does? It's me in charge and five ye
If there was someone who really enjoyed Richard's return, it was his little brother Asher. Asher became Richard's tail and he would follow him anywhere. That was how he ended up in the Grand Hotel with Richard today to meet the Lions heir, Brutus Bane. Brutus had asked for this meeting since DC got wind of the news of the return of Zeus whom everybody thought was dead. Richard had been holding it off until the man became too persistent and he decided to meet with Brutus so as to make the man leave him alone. As usual, Asher insisted they bring Melvin with the promise of taking care of her. Normally, Richard wouldn't bring a child to such meetings but this was their hotel. He thus knew that she would be safe and since Ash would be there to take care of her, he didn't see any problem. They parted with Ash at the doors to the karaoke room they entered and he made Ash promise that they wouldn't smoke or drink with Melvin inside the room. "What are you saying brother? Have you forg
12.The last thing Richard wanted was to get photographed by anyone carrying a strange girl taking her to hospital. He thus asked the guards to drive them to Sora Hospital that was owned by their family and registered and names under their mother's name, Sora Conrad - Armstrong. When they got to the hospital, Cash had already arranged a VIP room for them and then he had called the president of the hospital letting him know that their young master was bringing a patient in, the best doctors and nurses were deployed to that room and they found them waiting. "What's all this? Aren't there other sick people in this hospital? What are all of you doing here?" Richard asked with irritation as he set the unknown girl on the bed. That was when he looked at her well and he could tell that she was beautiful. She seemed to be of African Mexican heritage but he couldn't be sure. "We were told that you are bringing a patient here and since we didn't know what to expect, we had to deploy the be
