Ellis was beyond shocked when Emily’s hand smacked him on the face. The slap echoed in the hall and immediately, a red handprint showed on his face.
“Em…Emily. W.why…”
“Keep my name out of your filthy mouth.” She slapped him harder and he fell to the ground.
Someone stood by the corner, recording the humiliating moment.
“How dare you come here and cause a scene on the day of my engagement?” Emily said as she moved a step closer to kick him, but Jordan held her back.
It’s not like Jordan wanted to save Ellis from her wrath, but he saw the person that was taking a video of them and he didn’t want their reputation to be tarnished. He would deal with the trash later when there was no one around to witness it.
Ellis stood up with a hand holding his hurting cheek. He couldn’t believe that Emily just slapped him like that. Was she pretending because there were people around? He still refused to believe that she was doing this with a clear mind. She’s the love of his life.
“Let’s take this somewhere more private.” Jordan said and they walked away from the staring eyes in the lobby, back to the private hall Jordan had rented out for the sake of the proposal.
“Emily… there’s no need for us to pretend anymore. Just come with me, we’ll sort everything out. You don’t have to be forced to marry Jordan.” Ellis said meekly as soon as they were alone and she scoffed.
“You’re supposed to be the smartest person in school, yet you sound so dumb right now. Gosh! I can’t believe you’re so gullible to the point that even when the truth is right in front of you, you refuse to believe it.” Emily said to him.
“You think I forced her to marry me?” Jordan asked and laughed.
“You’re such a clown. Emily is my girlfriend. We’ve been dating for almost four years.”
“No, that’s impossible. Emily and I have been dating…”
“For just a little over a year. I know. It was my idea that she should make you believe she was in love with you and pretend to date you in secret.” Jordan said with a smirk.
Ellis looked from Emily to Jordan and though he didn’t want to believe what was happening, he could see that it was the truth. He had been played so cruelly.
“How could you?”
“Oh please! Spare me the pathetic tears. Did you really think I would love a nobody like you?” Emily said as she looked at him with disgust.
“You’re friends with the Janitor for crying out loud, you even help the old man clean sometimes. There’s even a video of you cleaning the toilet on the school blog. You don’t even have parents. If your own parents abandoned you, what makes you think I will be the one to accept you? Your existence is just a waste of precious space on the earth, me and you? Eww! The thought alone makes me shudder.”
He gasped as the words left her mouth. Emily was always so sweet and nice to him. She never joined others in school to bully him and that was how he fell in love with her. He never knew she was capable of saying such hurtful things.
“Why would you do this to me? What did I do to deserve this?”
“It’s not about you. My grades dropped I needed someone to help me with assignments and test so I wouldn’t fail.” Jordan said.
“Who else better than the school nerd. I couldn’t approach you to help me, so I used Emily to do it and you fell for it. She didn’t even have to try hard to make you fall so hopelessly in love. You’re so desperate for love, it’s pathetic. But I understand, she’s just too beautiful and perfect, I mean, who wouldn’t love her.”
Emily giggled as Jordan kissed her cheek.
“We no longer have use for you so I suggest you stay away from us. You’re nothing but trash. If not for that damn scholarship, you wouldn’t even have had the privilege to breathe the same air as we do because you definitely don’t deserve it. Even my shoes are more expensive than everything you own put together, how could I enslave myself to such a man?” Emily sneered and tears dropped from Ellis’ eyes.
He remembered all the times he met with Emil in secret, they would go on dates, walks, or study together. So I was all a lie. They even planned their wedding hashtags since their names almost sounded alike, Emily and Ellis. It had all been a trick to use him.
“It’s time for you to run along. Go back to school or I’ll report you for being absent. We can skip school anytime we want, but if your attendance isn’t perfect, you may lose your scholarship, you know that.” Jordan said to him.
Ellis turned and ran out of the hotel with tears in his eyes. As he stepped out of the building, he discovered that it was raining heavily. He didn’t have an umbrella and he didn’t want Jordan to fulfill his threat and report his absence to the school authorities so he left under the rain. By the time he got back to school, he was soaked and covered in mud after slipping and falling a few times while running.
As soon as he stepped into class, everybody began to laugh at him.
“Mr Ellis! What rubbish is this? Why do you look like a homeless person instead of a student? And you’re late to class as well, I was just about to leave. This is improper. Go and change, now!” The teacher said to him.
“I don’t have any clothes to change to.” He sniffed.
“You can find some in the trash.” Someone said from the back and the class laughed at him again.
“Quiet!” The teacher snapped and they stopped.
“Go ask the janitor. He will give you something from the lost and found bin. No one ever reclaims their property from there anyway.” The teacher said to Ellis and left the class.
They immediately brought out the humiliating video of Emily slapping him at the hotel and began to laugh at him.
He was so ashamed but as he turned to leave, someone held his shoulder.
“Where do you think you’re going? We have a message for you from Jordan.” He heard from behind him before he was punched hard from behind.
Before he knew what was happening, four other guys joined in and together, they beat him up right in front of the class. Nobody helped him, in fact they cheered while he was being beaten up as if his pain was for their entertainment, while some even took videos to upload on the school blog. “Did you really think garbage like you deserve to be with the school’s queen? Emily is the most beautiful girl here, how would you ever think she would date you?” One of them said as Ellis was kicked repeatedly.“This is for daring to go to the hotel and cause a scene when you should have just stayed here and accepted your fate. You’re a nobody who was lucky enough to get a scholarship to this school. Don’t ever forget your place.” After that, they left him and everyone walked past him to get to their next class. He remained on the floor there, weak, cold, bleeding and in pain. He couldn’t even move to take himself to the school clinic. It was when the janitor came in to clean up the class that t
In the opulent halls of the Royale estate, Mr Cyrus gathered the staff and conveyed with unwavering authority, "Henceforth, Mr. Ellis shall be addressed as 'Young Master.' Let no familiarity breach the walls of formality. Take his words as you take mine because he will inherit all I own." His words echoed through the servant corridors, sealing Ellis's new status with an air of aristocratic reverence. As Ellis explored the mansion, he marveled at the grandeur that awaited him. The door to his new room opened into a vast expanse of luxury, where modern amenities seamlessly blended with timeless elegance. The room was adorned with regal furnishings, silk drapes cascading from ceiling to floor, and a chandelier that glittered like a thousand stars because each bulb was covered with a diamond case. The centerpiece of the room was an expansive bed, adorned with the finest linens. A plush sitting area boasted views of the mansion's sprawling grounds, and a mahogany desk for work purposes. St
The shop attendant looked at Ellis with a sceptical expression because he didn’t look like he could afford even their cheapest item yet he was requesting for the most expensive one.“Umm, sir. I’m sure you must have walked in here by mistake. Everything in here is very expensive and no offence but you don’t look rich.” The attendant said.“My attire is not what matters, what matters is what is in my bank account.” Ellis said and Jordan laughed.“I’m pretty sure you don’t even have an account. The bank must have closed it down because we both know there’s no penny inside it.” Emily, fueled by a cocktail of resentment and jealousy, refused to let the matter rest. Her words were a calculated assault that made even the attendant laugh at him.“Bring what I asked you for or I will report you to your manager for refusing to attend to a client.” Ellis said to the attendant who immediately became consumed with fear of losing his job.“I’ll be right back, Sir.” The attendant left the reception
“Make sure their faces, names and ID are printed and distributed to every store in the building.” Ellis instructed the manager of the store who was nodding vigorously.Emily and Jordan still stood in one place, watching the whole scene unfold. They knew Ellis as wretched and poor, how could he have a black card and spend so much money right in front of them? They were still gawking when four security staff came to disrupt the shock that sent them reeling, by grabbing their arms. "Don't touch me! Do you know who my father is? I will sue for harassment and assault." Emily protested and wiggled under the hold of the two security staff that held onto each of her arms. "You heard the Young master. You have to be thrown out of this place right away. He owns the building now so he can do what he wants and he wants you both out of his property. He can sue you for trespassing as well." one of the security staff said. "I cannot believe that an imposter can come here and begin to tell you gu
The next day was quite an eventful day for Ellis, as it was the day chosen by Mr Cyrus to announce him as his new son and the chosen heir of the Royale family wealth. That day, a press conference was held in the extravagant hall of the Royale mansion. Preparations had been made and the cushions occupying the space in the living room were moved out for the conference, leaving enough space for the media reporters that would occupy the place. Mr Cyrus had put a call to media platforms, calling their attention to his announcement. He knew that they would pay attention to him because any news that had to do with the Royale family was taken very seriously in the city. Later that day, the media reporters flocked into the Royale mansion and took recordings of Mr Cyrus as he spoke. The whole Royale family were present at the press conference, and they were seated behind the decorated podium where Mr Cyrus stood to give his speech.Mr Cyrus cleared his throat before he began, "Good day, ladies
Ellis wasn’t used to being the centre of his attention in school unless it was for something negative. So it was weird for him to see people gawking at him, whispering about his new clothes and shoes and staring in awe as they discreetly tried to take pictures of his outfit. But he didn’t show that he was feeling a bit anxious, he just walked down the halls with his head held high. When he opened the class door, he didn’t immediately step inside, just in case they tried to pull the same prank on him as last time where there was a bucket of smelly water waiting at the top of the door to drench him.Nothing fell from the top of the door so he walked in with more confidence. The bullying would stop now that they knew he wasn’t just a poor student anymore. Jordan was in class with a frown on his face as he saw Ellis walking inside. Enily was also in the class seated beside Jordan, but she was looking at Ellis with longing. Just his shirt was more expensive that everything in her wardrobe.
Ellis was a bit shocked by the information he just learnt. He never knew something like this was possible, yet he couldn’t deny that it was real because he had just seen Mr Cyrus’ hands glow. Even without that physical evidence, Mr Cyrus had taken him in and made him the heir, there was no reason why he would lie about something like this. Cultivation was something he had only thought was possible in books and movies, not in real life. But he would be stupid to pass up the opportunity to learn about it.“I would like to get stronger, I don’t want to ever be a victim of bullying of any kind. But can you please explain more about this to me first?” Ellis asked and Mr Cyrus nodded.“Only very few people in the world know about this and it’s kept secret for a reason which is to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands. But even among those who know about it, only few can ever be able to access Qi and also harness it. It requires extreme focus and dedication. Some people take years bef
Jordan was furious as he returned to his room that evening. His father had just given him a tough choice. He was literally caught between a rock and a hard place. He had to either apologise to Ellis, or risk losing his inheritance. How could he possibly stoop so low to apologise? He had never had to apologise for anything in his whole life because of his rich status. People apologise to him instead even when he was wrong. But if he didn’t apologise, he would be forced to become poor and his social and rich status would mean nothing. “AARGH!” He yelled as he tossed all the items on his bedside drawer to the ground, There was a clattering sound, and a glass bottle even broke but he still wasn’t satisfied. He wanted to cause more damage. He focused his anger on his bed next, ripping the sheets to shreds and destroying all the pillows. He broke his chairs and tore any book he could find out of anger. Then he left the house and drove around recklessly till he ended up at a bar and drank h
The bell above the door jingled merrily as Ellis pushed it open, cradling his newborn son Derek in his arms. Zoey watched them both, her face glowing with joy and fatigue after the difficult labor. After the tumultuous path that had led him here - the battles with rivals, the crushing workload, the periods of self-doubt - he had truly found peace at last. His company was thriving, his beautiful wife was by his side, and now they had brought new life into the world. As he gazed down at Derek's tiny, scrunched-up face, Ellis felt a surge of fierce, protective love unlike anything he had experienced before. "Welcome, little man," Ellis murmured, leaning down to kiss his son's head. The click of stiletto heels on hardwood announced the arrival of Amelia, Ellis's indispensable executive assistant. Her usual brisk demeanor melted into a warm smile as she caught sight of the family. "Congratulations, you two," she said, placing a gentle hand on Derek's back. "He's absolutely precious." Zo
Emily nodded, finally finding her voice after reining in her tears. "Thank you, truly. I don't even know what to say beyond how grateful I am that you're both willing to start taking steps toward forgiveness," She paused, swallowing hard against the lump in her throat."I hurt you both in such an unfair, selfish way and I'll regret that forever. You didn't deserve that at all," Emily went on, her eyes glistening with sincerity. "But I hope I can show you both through my sustained actions and personal growth that I'm not that toxic, jealous person anymore who let obsession cloud my judgment so severely."Zoey gave her a sad smile, her eyes still holding remnants of past hurt. "It's going to take time, Emily. A lot of time. You have to understand how profoundly your lies and manipulation destabilized my relationship with Ellis.""I know," Emily replied solemnly. "And I don't expect your forgiveness or renewed trust to come easily at all. I'll need to prove myself over and over again. I'
As she drove away, Emily couldn't help but let the tears flow freely. She cried for the hurt she had caused and the potential permanent damage she may have done to their relationship. She cried at the thought of Ellis's disappointed look when he realized she had tried to take advantage of him and his vulnerability during his close breakup with Zoey. And she cried over the self-loathing and remorse she felt for letting herself become such an ugly, selfish person for a period of time due to her unhealthy jealousy.Deep down, Emily realized she may have permanently burned the bridge of friendship with Ellis and her based on her actions. While she desperately hoped she could prove herself changing through therapy and personal growth, the possibility that their close bond of trust could never be salvaged was very real. And she would have to live with that heavy burden knowing she had brought it all upon herself. Over the next several weeks, the silence and distance from Ellis and Zoey was
Emily paced back and forth nervously in her living room. Tomorrow was Ellis and Zoey's first anniversary and she had finally decided it was time to come clean and apologize for the lies and manipulation she had put them through around the time of their dating some time ago. She knew that they may not listen to her, but she had found love with someone, and she was trying to turn a new leaf for him. She wanted him to see that she was serious about changing her spiteful character, and hoped to show her love for him that way. She took a deep breath, trying to calm her nerves. This was the right thing to do, regardless of how awkward or uncomfortable it might be. Ellis and Zoey deserved the truth and a sincere apology from her after everything that had happened.Emily thought back to how it had all started over a year earlier. She had been harboring feelings for Ellis, long before he had started dating Zoey. But thinkingback, she knew that she never truly loved Ellis. She had just been aft
Meanwhile, in Ellis’ mind, he was in a chamber he didn’t recognise, standing alone. He looked around but he couldn’t find a way out of the place. There were no walls, no windows, no lower basement entrance. He tried touching the walls to see if there was a secret passage, but nothing happened. He called out several times, but got no response. He didn’t know what to do, and though he vaguely knew that it was a dream, he still felt a little weird, like it was actually happening. After several failed attempts to escape the weird chamber, he sat on the floor and began to meditate. He tried to reach for his aura deep within him, to see if it could somehow lead him out of there. He could feel the Qi, but it was not obeying his command. It was like it was locked down somehow. But he didn’t give up, he remained in a meditative pose, and calmed himself down till his heart rate slowed considerably. While in that state, he heard a voice. “Congratulations, you passed the test. I made the right c
For their honeymoon, Zoey was ecstatic when Ellis took her to the Maldives. She had always wanted to visit there. And not just that, Ellis had also purchased a private island in Zoey’s name, so she could always come there at any time. He planned to have a beach villa built there later so they could use it as a vacation spot, but for the time being, just a log cabin had been erected. The log cabin had modern amenities, like a hot tub, kitchen with up to date appliances, running water, a standby generator, etc. But it also had rustic features like a real fireplace with a chimney, an outdoor grill pit, a cleared out campsite, and a small lake instead of a swimming pool. The place was beautiful. They spent their first night there in bed all day, then they slept till afternoon. After waking, their meal had already been prepared by the local chef Ellis had hired. He didn’t want Zoey stressed out during the honeymoon, she would only cook if she chose to. Hehad so many activities planned for
As the months ticked by, everything slowly started falling into place. Zoey's dress was altered to perfection. The venue was booked and the menu tasting was complete — they selected a seasonal tasting menu with locally-sourced ingredients. The cake was a delicious vanilla sponge with tart lemon curd filling and a Swiss meringue buttercream frosting. One of Zoey's favorite touches was Gemma's idea to have a "coffee bar" at the reception with gourmet coffee drinks, flavored syrups and delicious accompaniments like biscotti and cannoli. She knew their guests would appreciate a delicious caffeinated pick-me-up after dancing the night away.In the last few weeks leading up to the wedding, Zoey was a bundle of nervous excitement. She tried her best to get enough rest and stay hydrated, knowing she needed to be in top form for the biggest day of her life. Ellis, on the other hand, seemed to take everything in stride. His calm, steady presence was invaluable for keeping Zoey grounded when she
Ellis took a deep breath as he looked across the candlelit table at Zoey. Her eyes sparkled in the flickering light and her dark hair fell in soft waves over her shoulders. After so much time together, he knew this was the woman he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. He reached across the table and took her hand in his. "Zoey, we've been through so much together these past several months. You've supported me every step of the way as I took on the challenging role of CEO at Royale Company. You're my partner, my best friend, my everything. I know some people may find it too soon, or some may say that you’re after my money. But I know in my heart that what we have is real. " He paused, his heart pounding in his chest as he got on one knee, and brought out a custom made diamond ring that cost a hundred million dollars. Zoey gasped. "I don't want to imagine my life without you by my side. Zoey, will you marry me?"Zoey's eyes went wide and she brought her hands up to cover her mou
George, for his part, saw his gilded life come crashing down in what felt like an incomprehensible nightmare. Gone were the bravado, the vainglorious sense of entitlement, the belief that he could indulge in whatever impulse struck him without consequence. His charmed existence had been brutally ripped away, replaced by the sullen, emasculating confines of a jail cell and the prospect of an incarceration looming ahead. Just like his brother, Marcus. Stripped of his identity, his wealth, and the support system that enabled his wanton ways, all George was left with was to reckon with his shattered sense of self. None of his party friends even visited, or tried to help him. He thought they would have his back, but now his eyes had cleared. His thoughts often drifted to Lisa, the wife whose unconditional love he had so wantonly discarded in pursuit of shallow gratification. Was it truly worth sacrificing everything — his marriage, his family, his father's pride and the staggering family f
