ALMOST BEATEN TO DEATH

Ellis was beyond shocked when Emily’s hand smacked him on the face. The slap echoed in the hall and immediately, a red handprint showed on his face.

“Em…Emily. W.why…”

“Keep my name out of your filthy mouth.” She slapped him harder and he fell to the ground.

Someone stood by the corner, recording the humiliating moment.

“How dare you come here and cause a scene on the day of my engagement?” Emily said as she moved a step closer to kick him, but Jordan held her back.

It’s not like Jordan wanted to save Ellis from her wrath, but he saw the person that was taking a video of them and he didn’t want their reputation to be tarnished. He would deal with the trash later when there was no one around to witness it.

Ellis stood up with a hand holding his hurting cheek. He couldn’t believe that Emily just slapped him like that. Was she pretending because there were people around? He still refused to believe that she was doing this with a clear mind. She’s the love of his life.

“Let’s take this somewhere more private.” Jordan said and they walked away from the staring eyes in the lobby, back to the private hall Jordan had rented out for the sake of the proposal.

“Emily… there’s no need for us to pretend anymore. Just come with me, we’ll sort everything out. You don’t have to be forced to marry Jordan.” Ellis said meekly as soon as they were alone and she scoffed.

“You’re supposed to be the smartest person in school, yet you sound so dumb right now. Gosh! I can’t believe you’re so gullible to the point that even when the truth is right in front of you, you refuse to believe it.” Emily said to him.

“You think I forced her to marry me?” Jordan asked and laughed.

“You’re such a clown. Emily is my girlfriend. We’ve been dating for almost four years.”

“No, that’s impossible. Emily and I have been dating…”

“For just a little over a year. I know. It was my idea that she should make you believe she was in love with you and pretend to date you in secret.” Jordan said with a smirk.

Ellis looked from Emily to Jordan and though he didn’t want to believe what was happening, he could see that it was the truth. He had been played so cruelly.

“How could you?”

“Oh please! Spare me the pathetic tears. Did you really think I would love a nobody like you?” Emily said as she looked at him with disgust.

“You’re friends with the Janitor for crying out loud, you even help the old man clean sometimes. There’s even a video of you cleaning the toilet on the school blog. You don’t even have parents. If your own parents abandoned you, what makes you think I will be the one to accept you? Your existence is just a waste of precious space on the earth, me and you? Eww! The thought alone makes me shudder.”

He gasped as the words left her mouth. Emily was always so sweet and nice to him. She never joined others in school to bully him and that was how he fell in love with her. He never knew she was capable of saying such hurtful things.

“Why would you do this to me? What did I do to deserve this?”

“It’s not about you. My grades dropped I needed someone to help me with assignments and test so I wouldn’t fail.” Jordan said.

“Who else better than the school nerd. I couldn’t approach you to help me, so I used Emily to do it and you fell for it. She didn’t even have to try hard to make you fall so hopelessly in love. You’re so desperate for love, it’s pathetic. But I understand, she’s just too beautiful and perfect, I mean, who wouldn’t love her.”

Emily giggled as Jordan kissed her cheek.

“We no longer have use for you so I suggest you stay away from us. You’re nothing but trash. If not for that damn scholarship, you wouldn’t even have had the privilege to breathe the same air as we do because you definitely don’t deserve it. Even my shoes are more expensive than everything you own put together, how could I enslave myself to such a man?” Emily sneered and tears dropped from Ellis’ eyes.

He remembered all the times he met with Emil in secret, they would go on dates, walks, or study together. So I was all a lie. They even planned their wedding hashtags since their names almost sounded alike, Emily and Ellis. It had all been a trick to use him.

“It’s time for you to run along. Go back to school or I’ll report you for being absent. We can skip school anytime we want, but if your attendance isn’t perfect, you may lose your scholarship, you know that.” Jordan said to him.

Ellis turned and ran out of the hotel with tears in his eyes. As he stepped out of the building, he discovered that it was raining heavily. He didn’t have an umbrella and he didn’t want Jordan to fulfill his threat and report his absence to the school authorities so he left under the rain. By the time he got back to school, he was soaked and covered in mud after slipping and falling a few times while running.

As soon as he stepped into class, everybody began to laugh at him.

“Mr Ellis! What rubbish is this? Why do you look like a homeless person instead of a student? And you’re late to class as well, I was just about to leave. This is improper. Go and change, now!” The teacher said to him.

“I don’t have any clothes to change to.” He sniffed.

“You can find some in the trash.” Someone said from the back and the class laughed at him again.

“Quiet!” The teacher snapped and they stopped.

“Go ask the janitor. He will give you something from the lost and found bin. No one ever reclaims their property from there anyway.” The teacher said to Ellis and left the class.

They immediately brought out the humiliating video of Emily slapping him at the hotel and began to laugh at him.

He was so ashamed but as he turned to leave, someone held his shoulder.

“Where do you think you’re going? We have a message for you from Jordan.” He heard from behind him before he was punched hard from behind.
