CHANGE OF FATE

Before he knew what was happening, four other guys joined in and together, they beat him up right in front of the class. Nobody helped him, in fact they cheered while he was being beaten up as if his pain was for their entertainment, while some even took videos to upload on the school blog.

“Did you really think garbage like you deserve to be with the school’s queen? Emily is the most beautiful girl here, how would you ever think she would date you?” One of them said as Ellis was kicked repeatedly.

“This is for daring to go to the hotel and cause a scene when you should have just stayed here and accepted your fate. You’re a nobody who was lucky enough to get a scholarship to this school. Don’t ever forget your place.”

After that, they left him and everyone walked past him to get to their next class. He remained on the floor there, weak, cold, bleeding and in pain. He couldn’t even move to take himself to the school clinic. It was when the janitor came in to clean up the class that the man saw Ellis on the ground.

“Oh dear! What did they do to you this time? Who did you offend?” The man asked as he quickly rushed Ellis to the clinic.

Ellis was unconscious now, but the school nurse, with the janitor’s help, undressed him to remove the wet clothes, and then attended to his wounds before putting a hospital gown on him and covering him up so he would warm up. The janitor watched him sleep and was filled with so much sympathy for all the young man had to endure in the school just because he wasn’t born rich.

Ellis was the only one who was ever nice to the janitor since he started schooling at the college. The others always looked down on the man and played pranks on him. When Ellis finally woke up, school was over for the day because he had been asleep for hours. The pain in his body had also lessened because of the painkillers that were administered to him by the nurse.

“Thank you for bringing me to the clinic, Mr Cyrus. Without your help, I would have died.” Ellis said to the janitor as he tried to sit up.

“You don’t need to thank me. You’ve done more for me since you started attending this school. And I just realised that I haven’t done enough for you. You deserve more and I’m going to give it to you. You’re coming home with me. As from today, you will be my son. I will officially adopt you and you will be the heir to my wealth.” Mr Cyrus said with a smile.

Ellis looked at the janitor with a confused expression. Wealth? If the man was rich why would he be a janitor? He just concluded within himself that he must be hallucinating because of the medication that he had been given to numb the pain from his bruises. But after he was discharged from the school clinic, he was shocked to see an entourage of cars waiting for them outside even with security guards.

“W.what’s this?” Ellis asked with a perplexed look and the man chuckled.

“Come with me, and you’ll understand. If I explain everything now, you won’t believe me.”

Ellis got into the middle car with Mr Cyrus. He had never been inside such an expensive car before even though he loved cars so much. It was due to his love for cars that he knew that this car was a limited edition set. Only three of it had been produced in the world and it cost a hundred and fifty million dollars. Only someone who had a lot of money could afford it, so how did the janitor have such a car? Ellis was dumbfounded.

“Where are you taking me?” Ellis asked.

“To my home. My real home, not the one room janitor’s apartment that I’ve been pretending to live in all this time.” Mr Cyrus replied as the car began to move.

His shock multiplied when they were driven to the most expensive estate in the country. Only the country’s richest families, top business and political moguls could own a house here. The Royale Estate, owned by the Royale family, the only multi trillionaire family in the country, the rest were mere billionaires. The same family that owned his school. He was shocked when the car stopped at the biggest mansion which belonged to the Royale family.

The gate was black but on each side of it, there were golden lion statues with crowns on their heads and their mouths open in a roar. That was the Royale family crest. The gates opened and they drove in. As they got out of the car and walked towards the main entrance, the house staff walked out and lined themselves on both sides of the staircase.

“Welcome Master.” They would each say as Ellis and Mr Cyrus walked forward.

Now Ellis had confirmation that Mr Cyrus wasn’t lying. If not, why would they be calling him Master? As soon as they got inside the house, Ellis wanted to ask Mr Cyrus to explain properly but was dumbfounded by the interiors of the mansion. Almost everything was in pure gold, from the chandeliers to the picture frames to the antique art decors.

“My full name is Cyrus Royale. The current owner of the Royale Consortium. Everything under the Royale name belongs to me and soon it will all be yours. Like I said before, I have chosen you as my heir. I will retire soon, I’m almost seventy.” Mr Cyrus said.

“But why would you be a janitor? And why didn’t anyone at school recognise you?” Ellis asked and Mr Cyrus chuckled.

“No one recognised me because of my disguise.” As he said this, he removed the fake beard and the fake blonde wig, then the blue eye contacts.

Mr Cyrus now had black hair and grey eyes with just a small moustache on his face.

“But why disguise yourself and endure humiliation from the students. You’re a trillionaire. Richer than even the president of the country.”

“I did it because I wanted to see how I would be treated when I pretended to be poor. I’ve been looking for someone young, hardworking and diligent to take over my empire.”

“But you have children to inherit it.”

“My oldest son is more interested in embezzling company funds, and his two children aren’t any better. His son is a chronic gambler, and the daughter is a chronic waster. My daughter is a bit better, but she has a manipulative husband. If I leave everything to her, the husband will find a way to steal it all from her. Her son is too young to take over and I’ll retire soon. My last son wastes all his money on women and has so many illegitimate children, it’s hard to keep track of all of them and I would never will my wealth to any of them anyway.”

“But I’m not related to you by blood.”

“That doesn’t matter, I will legally adopt you and give you the Royale name and wealth. I’ve watched you since you got admitted to the school, you’re smart, humble, trustworthy and resourceful.”

“But won’t your children and grandchildren be angry?”

“Don’t worry about them. It’s my money and I can do what I want with it. I worked hard for it and I won’t let them destroy it. You need to rest. Tomorrow I will start the process to officially make you my son.”

I’m sure you must have walked in here by mistake. Everything in here is very expensive and no offence but you don’t look rich.” The attendant said.“My attire is not what matters, what matters is what is in my bank account.” Ellis said and Jordan laughed.“I’m pretty sure you don’t even have an account. The bank must have closed it down because we both know there’s no penny inside it.” Emily, fueled by a cocktail of resentment and jealousy, refused to let the matter rest. Her words were a calculated assault that made even the attendant laugh at him.“Bring what I asked you for or I will report you to your manager for refusing to attend to a client.” Ellis said to the attendant who immediately became consumed with fear of losing his job.“I’ll be right back, Sir.” The attendant left the reception

The next day was quite an eventful day for Ellis, as it was the day chosen by Mr Cyrus to announce him as his new son and the chosen heir of the Royale family wealth. That day, a press conference was held in the extravagant hall of the Royale mansion. Preparations had been made and the cushions occupying the space in the living room were moved out for the conference, leaving enough space for the media reporters that would occupy the place. Mr Cyrus had put a call to media platforms, calling their attention to his announcement. He knew that they would pay attention to him because any news that had to do with the Royale family was taken very seriously in the city. Later that day, the media reporters flocked into the Royale mansion and took recordings of Mr Cyrus as he spoke. The whole Royale family were present at the press conference, and they were seated behind the decorated podium where Mr Cyrus stood to give his speech.Mr Cyrus cleared his throat before he began, "Good day, ladies

Ellis wasn’t used to being the centre of his attention in school unless it was for something negative. So it was weird for him to see people gawking at him, whispering about his new clothes and shoes and staring in awe as they discreetly tried to take pictures of his outfit. But he didn’t show that he was feeling a bit anxious, he just walked down the halls with his head held high. When he opened the class door, he didn’t immediately step inside, just in case they tried to pull the same prank on him as last time where there was a bucket of smelly water waiting at the top of the door to drench him.Nothing fell from the top of the door so he walked in with more confidence. The bullying would stop now that they knew he wasn’t just a poor student anymore. Jordan was in class with a frown on his face as he saw Ellis walking inside. Ellis was a bit shocked by the information he just learnt. He never knew something like this was possible, yet he couldn’t deny that it was real because he had just seen Mr Cyrus’ hands glow. Even without that physical evidence, Mr Cyrus had taken him in and made him the heir, there was no reason why he would lie about something like this. Cultivation was something he had only thought was possible in books and movies, not in real life. But he would be stupid to pass up the opportunity to learn about it.“I would like to get stronger, I don’t want to ever be a victim of bullying of any kind. But can you please explain more about this to me first?” Ellis asked and Mr Cyrus nodded.“Only very few people in the world know about this and it’s kept secret for a reason which is to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands. He had never had to apologise for anything in his whole life because of his rich status. People apologise to him instead even when he was wrong.
