The next day was quite an eventful day for Ellis, as it was the day chosen by Mr Cyrus to announce him as his new son and the chosen heir of the Royale family wealth. That day, a press conference was held in the extravagant hall of the Royale mansion. Preparations had been made and the cushions occupying the space in the living room were moved out for the conference, leaving enough space for the media reporters that would occupy the place. Mr Cyrus had put a call to media platforms, calling their attention to his announcement. He knew that they would pay attention to him because any news that had to do with the Royale family was taken very seriously in the city.
Later that day, the media reporters flocked into the Royale mansion and took recordings of Mr Cyrus as he spoke. The whole Royale family were present at the press conference, and they were seated behind the decorated podium where Mr Cyrus stood to give his speech.
Mr Cyrus cleared his throat before he began, "Good day, ladies and gentlemen. Trust that you are all well? My name, as you know, is Mr Cyrus Royale of the Royale family. My reason for calling this conference this morning, is to announce to the general public, my chosen heir." He paused to look at the press men.
Mr Cyrus had made sure to connect the press conference to Ellis's school, so that his classmates could see what was going on. The students were made to watch the conference and they saw Mr Cyrus as he spoke through the big television screen in the school's multipurpose hall, and wondered what the press conference was all about. They couldn’t recognise him as their former janitor because he was no longer wearing his disguise.
Mr Cyrus continued.
"Over the years, I have watched the behaviors and characters of my children enough to know who exactly took after me. I have looked from Marcus who is my first child, to his sister the second, and finally to the third and last child. Now, while I mean no offense, I have also noticed that leaving the legacy of the Royale family wealth in the hands of Marcus would cause a lot of trouble for the family when I am gone. As for my daughter, she would have made a very good heir, but her husband is her hindrance. As for my last son and child, he knows better than expecting to be chosen as the heir."
Mr Cyrus paused again. Whispers were already filling the room, as the press men and the members of the Royale family murmured amongst themselves. Even in the big multipurpose hall where the student watched the conference, whispers and murmurs filled the air. If Mr Cyrus did not want to make any of his children the heir to his wealth, who then did he want? Maybe a grandchild. Not everyone believed the rumour that Ellis was a Royale now.
But Mr Cyrus continued, and this time he sent everyone into a big shock that took them quite a while to absorb.
"And because I wanted an upright heir to my wealth, I disguised myself as the janitor at the school owned by my family."
A wave of wows went round the big multipurpose hall in the school. Both teachers and students were more than surprised. So, the janitor whom everybody including teachers made fun of, was the owner of the school? So, Mr Cyrus the janitor was Mr Cyrus Royale?
Mr Cyrus continued. "And while I was there, I encountered a lot of bullying and insults and it really opened my eyes. But there was only one child who did not bully me. Only one who helped me with cleaning whenever he sensed I was too tired to continue. And that child happened to be the poorest child in the whole of the school. He was bullied all the time by his classmates and students from different classes just because he was poor. But although he was poor, this child had a heart of gold that not even one of his counterparts at school had. And because I saw how good he was towards me and even to the people who bullied him, I decided to make him my heir. Ladies and gentlemen, please help me welcome my chosen heir, Ellis Royale!" Mr Cyrus declared and a round of applause came from the press men in the room.
Mr Cyrus's family clapped reluctantly as Ellis made it to the podium to join him. As Ellis stood in front of the press men and on the podium, his classmates at school were shocked.
Ellis? When did Ellis become a Royale? Now they understood how Emily and Jordan could have been humiliated so badly just a day ago at the mall. Ellis was rich now.
"Can you please tell the press what other values you found in Ellis that piqued your interest, apart from the fact that he was good to you?" A reporter asked.
"I always saw students try to steal food from the vending machines in the school. The only child I had never seen try that or be involved in some other shenanigan was Ellis. That is integrity, and that was one of the values that made me take interest in him. Some other time, I entrusted some money into Ellis's hands and when I asked for the money again about two weeks later, Ellis produced the money immediately, right in front of me. That is trust. That is another great value that made me interested in Ellis."
Another reporter asked, "What then is your plan for the inheritance? Are your children happy with your new choice?"
Mr Cyrus smiled. He knew he needed to use his tact for this one.
"Well, the plan for the inheritance has not changed at all. I will give each of my children and grandchildren a part of my wealth. The only difference when it comes to Ellis is that he is going to keep running the family business so as to be able to keep my legacy on when I pass away. Everybody's inheritance just as I have laid it out in my will remains the same. As for them liking my decision, I think it would be best if they all come together in harmony to make everything work out for the good of the family with Ellis. However, if any of them has any concerns that I would need to know about, they can summon my attention to it."
"But does this now make Ellis more special than his siblings? Wouldn't he now have an upper hand against his siblings? He’s adopted, right?"
"Of course the heir carries a special responsibility, but that does not make him a better human than another person. You know, power can get in the head of the person holding it. If Ellis lets this position get to him, then he is in fact not a good human. His responsibility now is to carry the family along especially when I am gone. I have seen the potential in him and I know that he can do it."
Another press man raised his hand and Mr Cyrus nodded.
"Mr Ellis. What do you have to say?"
Mr Cyrus adjusted for Ellis to take his stand on the stage.
"Fate can favour one overnight and the person you think is nobody can become somebody by the time you wake up from your sleep. In all you do, do not look down on the people around you. Everybody is great in their own way."

The next day, Ellis went to school in his new and expensive designer shirt which he wore over his expensive denim pants and sneakers, in his new car, a different one from the one he used to shop. When the car rolled up to the school's parking lot, a guard came down to open the door for Ellis.
His entrance into the hallway leading to his class was quite the dramatic one, as everyone in the hallways stood to watch the new Ellis in awe. He wore the newest and limited model of the latest sneakers in town, that not even Jordan, the supposedly richest student on campus, had been able to buy. Jaws dropped, watching as he made his entrance into class.
Ellis wasn’t used to being the centre of his attention in school unless it was for something negative. So it was weird for him to see people gawking at him, whispering about his new clothes and shoes and staring in awe as they discreetly tried to take pictures of his outfit. But he didn’t show that he was feeling a bit anxious, he just walked down the halls with his head held high. When he opened the class door, he didn’t immediately step inside, just in case they tried to pull the same prank on him as last time where there was a bucket of smelly water waiting at the top of the door to drench him.Nothing fell from the top of the door so he walked in with more confidence. The bullying would stop now that they knew he wasn’t just a poor student anymore. Jordan was in class with a frown on his face as he saw Ellis walking inside. Enily was also in the class seated beside Jordan, but she was looking at Ellis with longing. Just his shirt was more expensive that everything in her wardrobe.
Ellis was a bit shocked by the information he just learnt. He never knew something like this was possible, yet he couldn’t deny that it was real because he had just seen Mr Cyrus’ hands glow. Even without that physical evidence, Mr Cyrus had taken him in and made him the heir, there was no reason why he would lie about something like this. Cultivation was something he had only thought was possible in books and movies, not in real life. But he would be stupid to pass up the opportunity to learn about it.“I would like to get stronger, I don’t want to ever be a victim of bullying of any kind. But can you please explain more about this to me first?” Ellis asked and Mr Cyrus nodded.“Only very few people in the world know about this and it’s kept secret for a reason which is to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands. But even among those who know about it, only few can ever be able to access Qi and also harness it. It requires extreme focus and dedication. Some people take years bef
Jordan was furious as he returned to his room that evening. His father had just given him a tough choice. He was literally caught between a rock and a hard place. He had to either apologise to Ellis, or risk losing his inheritance. How could he possibly stoop so low to apologise? He had never had to apologise for anything in his whole life because of his rich status. People apologise to him instead even when he was wrong. But if he didn’t apologise, he would be forced to become poor and his social and rich status would mean nothing. “AARGH!” He yelled as he tossed all the items on his bedside drawer to the ground, There was a clattering sound, and a glass bottle even broke but he still wasn’t satisfied. He wanted to cause more damage. He focused his anger on his bed next, ripping the sheets to shreds and destroying all the pillows. He broke his chairs and tore any book he could find out of anger. Then he left the house and drove around recklessly till he ended up at a bar and drank h
Jordan was shocked by Ellis' statement. How could he possibly kneel before someone he bullied for so long?"I'm leaving in two minutes so make up your mind before your time expires. I have more important things to do than wait for you here." Ellis said and checked the time on his new, ten million dollar wrist watch. The watch was even among the cheapest in his new collection. Most of his accessories had been gifts from Mr Cyrus. Jordan looked at the watch with awe because he had begged his own father for that same watch and his father had refused to buy him one. Now Ellis was just flaunting the watch just days after becoming a Royale. It was shocking to see Ellis in such an esteemed position. How could everything just change so suddenly?Jordan swallowed nervously and looked around the class. Everyone was staring at him, waiting to see what he would do. Some of them were taking videos and he tried to command them to stop recording. Before now when he was the boss of the school, they w
Mrs Adens was more than surprised to see her daughter come back home stained with mud. It was the dirtiest she had ever seen her daughter and it made her wonder why Emily was getting back from school like that. "Emily dear, why do you look so unkept?" She asked and rinsed her hands off the carrots that she had been dicing when Emily came in. Emily walked towards her slowly and came to a halt right in front of the kitchen. "Someone splashed mud on my body as he drove out from school." Emily said quite soberly. She didn’t want to admit the true situation, that someone she had thought was beneath her had returned even better and had rejected her so openly. "Mud?" Her mother's voice was a puzzled one. "Who would do that? And why Did you stand up to them?" "It was a classmate." Emily said again, but this time, she did not wait for her mother to speak. Instead, she walked into her room to change up. As Emily went up, her mother wondered which of her classmates would soil her clot
Ellis got home from school a bit tired that day. He needed to rest, but before that, he wanted to tell his father what had transpired between him and Jordan at school. He knew where his father was — at the study. He went up there to meet him. Mr Cyrus was very diligent with his work, so even when he didn’t regularly visit his office, he always worked from home to supervise the activities going on."Good afternoon." Ellis saluted his father. "Oh, Ellis! Welcome. How was school?" Mr Cyrus said, raising his face up from his laptop to look at Ellis."I'm fine, dad. How are you? You seem like you’ve been working for a while. You need to rest more.""I'm fine as well. And don’t worry about me, my boy, I’ll rest when I’m dead. Did you have any trouble today? I hope no one is bothering you." Ellis sighed and smiled. "Well, today, I made Jordan apologise to me and everyone he has bullied in the school. It was fun to watch."Mr Cyrus listened with sheer interest in what his son was saying. "
George hesitated a little before speaking up. His hesitation irritated his father and puzzled Ellis. Why was he delaying instead of just making his request? It must be something really bad."I want to speak to you in private, father. Send your street rat out of here." George finally mumbled."You can speak. You have my attention. Though I may just decide to have you thrown out instead for calling my son a street rat." Mr Cyrus said with a frown on his face.George wondered if his father did not understand what the word, ‘private’ meant. His father made no move to send Ellis out and was still telling him to speak? What sort of thing was that?"I want to speak to you alone, father. Did you not understand what I said." George responded, giving Ellis a disapproving look. "I understood you loud and clear, and I said I am listening.""What the fuck, dad? Do you want me to spell it out? I want to speak to you alone, in the absence of Ellis. Send him away. This is a private matter. I don’t w
George stood up again and began pacing back and forth in his father's spacious study, his Italian leather shoes clicking sharply against the marble floors. He loosened his Armani tie in frustration as his father, Mr Cyrus, sat stoically behind his desk, unmoved by his son's impassioned pleas."Dad, I think you need to reconsider the idea of this marriage," George said, running his hands through his expertly arranged hair. "You know as well as I that Lisa is completely unsuitable to be my wife. She won’t bring a good image to the family. Look at my sister’s husband, he was a businessman before she married him, yet, you never approved of her choice."Mr Cyrus arched his eyebrow. "Unsuitable? You should have thought of that when you were busy with her in the bedroom. My disapproval of your sister’s husband is for reasons best known to me. At this point, I no longer have high expectations of you, so marrying your Lisa won’t impact the image of this family in any way. The marriage will be
