The shop attendant looked at Ellis with a sceptical expression because he didn’t look like he could afford even their cheapest item yet he was requesting for the most expensive one.
“Umm, sir. I’m sure you must have walked in here by mistake. Everything in here is very expensive and no offence but you don’t look rich.” The attendant said.
“My attire is not what matters, what matters is what is in my bank account.” Ellis said and Jordan laughed.
“I’m pretty sure you don’t even have an account. The bank must have closed it down because we both know there’s no penny inside it.” Emily, fueled by a cocktail of resentment and jealousy, refused to let the matter rest. Her words were a calculated assault that made even the attendant laugh at him.
“Bring what I asked you for or I will report you to your manager for refusing to attend to a client.” Ellis said to the attendant who immediately became consumed with fear of losing his job.
“I’ll be right back, Sir.” The attendant left the reception desk and moved deeper into the store and returned with a watch.
“This is the only piece available in the store and it costs eighty million dollars. How do you intend to pay for this, Sir?” The attendant asked and Ellis brought out his new black card.
Jordan and Emily, their disdain momentarily overshadowed by intrigue, watched in silence. Ellis handed the black card to the shop attendant, who executed the transaction with a practised efficiency. The moment the transaction was approved, the sales associate, well-versed in the art of presentation, placed the coveted wristwatch within an exquisite box, its exterior a testament to the exclusivity within.
"Thank you for choosing us, sir. This is a masterpiece, truly one of a kind," the attendant intoned with a bow, presenting the box to Ellis.
Now that he had seen the black card, his approach to Ellis was more respectful.
Ellis, seizing the opportunity to elevate the theatrics of the moment, opened the box with deliberate grace. The watch, nestled within a bed of plush velvet, gleamed with an ethereal allure. The atmosphere shifted, undergoing a transformation. The balance of power, once tipped in favour of their mockery, now swayed toward Ellis with his showcase of opulence that left Jordan and Emily momentarily speechless.
Jordan, his earlier sneer replaced by an involuntary widening of the eyes, struggled to maintain composure. Emily, her disdain momentarily eclipsed by awe, found herself at a loss for words as they watched him wear the watch. Jordan knew he would never be able to afford buying just one watch for eighty million dollars
Ellis, seizing the opportunity to punctuate the moment, addressed the silent observers. "It seems life has a way of surprising us. Enjoy your day," he said, a subtle smirk playing on his lips.
Jordan, fueled by envy and resentment, decided to challenge the authenticity of Ellis' newfound opulence. How could this poor rat get a black card? There was only one explanation.
“Security! Don’t let that man leave. He’s a thief.” Jordan said and the store’s guards immediately blocked the entrance to prevent Ellis from leaving.
“Let me pass.” Ellis fumed. How dare they accuse him without proof.
“I am not a thief.”
“Yes you are.” Emily said. “We know you, you’re poor. How could you possibly have gotten a black card? You must have stolen it from someone. Is that why you’ve been absent from school all this while?”
“I will talk to the manager.” Jordan said and turned to go to the office.
In the manager's office, Jordan confronted the boutique's manager with a vehement demand. "I need you to confirm the owner of the black card that was just used for a transaction immediately. I suspect it's stolen, and I won't stand for someone parading stolen wealth in our midst."
The manager, accustomed to handling matters of discretion with finesse, maintained a stoic demeanour. "Sir, we take the privacy of our clients very seriously. However, I assure you that all transactions are thoroughly vetted. But we cannot simply disclose personal information."
But Jordan, unwilling to accept the boundaries of confidentiality, pressed further. "This is no ordinary situation. That black card signifies a level of wealth that goes beyond the man who used it. Come and see for yourself."
Reluctantly, the manager followed Jordan out.
“That’s him, the impostor and thief.” Jordan pointed at Ellis.
The manager looked at Ellis' clothes with disdain wondering why someone who looked so poor even stepped foot in such an exclusive store.
“Young man, I suggest you confess your crime. Where and who did you steal that black card from?” The manager asked and Ellis frowned.
“I am not a thief, the card belongs to me.” Ellis replied.
“How can a wretched human like you have a black card? I will make sure you rot in jail for this.” The manager said and initiated a process of verification.
The financial department was summoned to confirm the ownership of the black card that had become the subject of suspicion. As the manager engaged in the procedural steps, Jordan's agitation simmered beneath the surface, his envy transforming into a fuel for impatience.
The manager received a call from the bank stating the owner of the card and the manager’s eyes widened.
“Y.your name is Ellis Royale? A member of the Royale family?” The manager stuttered in fear.
“That’s a lie. He is not a Royale.” Emily said immediately. “Look at him. He’s poor.”
"The bank just confirmed it. The black card is the property of Mr. Ellis Royale."
But Jordan, entrenched in his envy and disdain, refused to accept the outcome. "I won't believe it until I hear it from the bank myself. I want them to confirm that he's not the rightful owner."
“The card belongs to me. My name is now Ellis Royale, heir to the Royale fortune. It will be officially announced tomorrow. You think this watch is expensive but it’s cheap compared to the wealth I now own. I could buy this store ten times over, and immediately I leave here, I’ll make sure my father knows how I was harassed in your store, Mr manager.”
The manager, recognizing the need to resolve the matter, immediately went down on his knees.
“I’m so sorry, sir. I promise it will never happen again. Please. I just got the job to manage this store a few weeks ago, I can’t lose it now. My boss will be furious. I beg you, have mercy.”
"Mr. Ellis Royale, we apologise for any inconvenience caused.” The shop attendant also went on his knees.
If his manager was begging then he had to beg too so they don’t lose their jobs.
But Jordan, though forced to accept the truth, could not let the moment pass without a parting shot. "It's absurd that someone could just walk in and pretend to be part of our world. One must be vigilant against impostors." He remarked, his words laden with a bitterness that refused to be concealed. “How could you possibly believe that this man here is a Royale? We go to the same school, we know his real surname.”
“I’ll forgive you on one condition.” Ellis said to the manager.
“Anything sir, anything you want, I will do it.” The manager immediately acquiesced.
“Throw the two of them out and make sure they are banned from ever shopping here.” Ellis said.
“What? Y.you can’t do that.” Emily stuttered in shock and he turned to face her.
“I am a Royale now, I can do what I want. In fact, I will buy the whole shopping mall right now just to prove a point.” Ellis said to them and then faced the manager.
“Who owns this mall? I need their number right now.”
The manager rushed to his office and retrieved the number of the mall owner immediately. Jordan, left with the remnants of his envious thoughts, could only watch as Ellis called the mall owner and bargained to buy the property. The owner agreed to sell it to him for nine hundred and fifty million dollars. Since that was more than the amount on his black card, Ellis called Mr Cyrus to send more money to his card to buy the property and within minutes, two billion dollars was transferred to him.
He paid the owner for the property and the deed of ownership was immediately sent to him through email to sign at any time convenient for him.
“The whole property belongs to me now, and the both of you are now banned from the premises.” Ellis smirked.
“Make sure their faces, names and ID are printed and distributed to every store in the building.” Ellis instructed the manager of the store who was nodding vigorously.Emily and Jordan still stood in one place, watching the whole scene unfold. They knew Ellis as wretched and poor, how could he have a black card and spend so much money right in front of them? They were still gawking when four security staff came to disrupt the shock that sent them reeling, by grabbing their arms. "Don't touch me! Do you know who my father is? I will sue for harassment and assault." Emily protested and wiggled under the hold of the two security staff that held onto each of her arms. "You heard the Young master. You have to be thrown out of this place right away. He owns the building now so he can do what he wants and he wants you both out of his property. He can sue you for trespassing as well." one of the security staff said. "I cannot believe that an imposter can come here and begin to tell you gu
The next day was quite an eventful day for Ellis, as it was the day chosen by Mr Cyrus to announce him as his new son and the chosen heir of the Royale family wealth. That day, a press conference was held in the extravagant hall of the Royale mansion. Preparations had been made and the cushions occupying the space in the living room were moved out for the conference, leaving enough space for the media reporters that would occupy the place. Mr Cyrus had put a call to media platforms, calling their attention to his announcement. He knew that they would pay attention to him because any news that had to do with the Royale family was taken very seriously in the city. Later that day, the media reporters flocked into the Royale mansion and took recordings of Mr Cyrus as he spoke. The whole Royale family were present at the press conference, and they were seated behind the decorated podium where Mr Cyrus stood to give his speech.Mr Cyrus cleared his throat before he began, "Good day, ladies
Ellis wasn’t used to being the centre of his attention in school unless it was for something negative. So it was weird for him to see people gawking at him, whispering about his new clothes and shoes and staring in awe as they discreetly tried to take pictures of his outfit. But he didn’t show that he was feeling a bit anxious, he just walked down the halls with his head held high. When he opened the class door, he didn’t immediately step inside, just in case they tried to pull the same prank on him as last time where there was a bucket of smelly water waiting at the top of the door to drench him.Nothing fell from the top of the door so he walked in with more confidence. The bullying would stop now that they knew he wasn’t just a poor student anymore. Jordan was in class with a frown on his face as he saw Ellis walking inside. Enily was also in the class seated beside Jordan, but she was looking at Ellis with longing. Just his shirt was more expensive that everything in her wardrobe.
Ellis was a bit shocked by the information he just learnt. He never knew something like this was possible, yet he couldn’t deny that it was real because he had just seen Mr Cyrus’ hands glow. Even without that physical evidence, Mr Cyrus had taken him in and made him the heir, there was no reason why he would lie about something like this. Cultivation was something he had only thought was possible in books and movies, not in real life. But he would be stupid to pass up the opportunity to learn about it.“I would like to get stronger, I don’t want to ever be a victim of bullying of any kind. But can you please explain more about this to me first?” Ellis asked and Mr Cyrus nodded.“Only very few people in the world know about this and it’s kept secret for a reason which is to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands. But even among those who know about it, only few can ever be able to access Qi and also harness it. It requires extreme focus and dedication. Some people take years bef
Jordan was furious as he returned to his room that evening. His father had just given him a tough choice. He was literally caught between a rock and a hard place. He had to either apologise to Ellis, or risk losing his inheritance. How could he possibly stoop so low to apologise? He had never had to apologise for anything in his whole life because of his rich status. People apologise to him instead even when he was wrong. But if he didn’t apologise, he would be forced to become poor and his social and rich status would mean nothing. “AARGH!” He yelled as he tossed all the items on his bedside drawer to the ground, There was a clattering sound, and a glass bottle even broke but he still wasn’t satisfied. He wanted to cause more damage. He focused his anger on his bed next, ripping the sheets to shreds and destroying all the pillows. He broke his chairs and tore any book he could find out of anger. Then he left the house and drove around recklessly till he ended up at a bar and drank h
Jordan was shocked by Ellis' statement. How could he possibly kneel before someone he bullied for so long?"I'm leaving in two minutes so make up your mind before your time expires. I have more important things to do than wait for you here." Ellis said and checked the time on his new, ten million dollar wrist watch. The watch was even among the cheapest in his new collection. Most of his accessories had been gifts from Mr Cyrus. Jordan looked at the watch with awe because he had begged his own father for that same watch and his father had refused to buy him one. Now Ellis was just flaunting the watch just days after becoming a Royale. It was shocking to see Ellis in such an esteemed position. How could everything just change so suddenly?Jordan swallowed nervously and looked around the class. Everyone was staring at him, waiting to see what he would do. Some of them were taking videos and he tried to command them to stop recording. Before now when he was the boss of the school, they w
Mrs Adens was more than surprised to see her daughter come back home stained with mud. It was the dirtiest she had ever seen her daughter and it made her wonder why Emily was getting back from school like that. "Emily dear, why do you look so unkept?" She asked and rinsed her hands off the carrots that she had been dicing when Emily came in. Emily walked towards her slowly and came to a halt right in front of the kitchen. "Someone splashed mud on my body as he drove out from school." Emily said quite soberly. She didn’t want to admit the true situation, that someone she had thought was beneath her had returned even better and had rejected her so openly. "Mud?" Her mother's voice was a puzzled one. "Who would do that? And why Did you stand up to them?" "It was a classmate." Emily said again, but this time, she did not wait for her mother to speak. Instead, she walked into her room to change up. As Emily went up, her mother wondered which of her classmates would soil her clot
Ellis got home from school a bit tired that day. He needed to rest, but before that, he wanted to tell his father what had transpired between him and Jordan at school. He knew where his father was — at the study. He went up there to meet him. Mr Cyrus was very diligent with his work, so even when he didn’t regularly visit his office, he always worked from home to supervise the activities going on."Good afternoon." Ellis saluted his father. "Oh, Ellis! Welcome. How was school?" Mr Cyrus said, raising his face up from his laptop to look at Ellis."I'm fine, dad. How are you? You seem like you’ve been working for a while. You need to rest more.""I'm fine as well. And don’t worry about me, my boy, I’ll rest when I’m dead. Did you have any trouble today? I hope no one is bothering you." Ellis sighed and smiled. "Well, today, I made Jordan apologise to me and everyone he has bullied in the school. It was fun to watch."Mr Cyrus listened with sheer interest in what his son was saying. "
