Ch-8: Unexpected Help

Till now, Jack had been thinking that with his exit from the underworld, all his connections had died out, too.

But as soon as life had tossed Jack into a tight spot, his most reliable ally was also back by his side, as if he had never left in the first place.

"Blue Jay, I'm running short on time, but just remember that you have helped me at a very crucial time and I'll never forget it. Thank you…"

"Ye- yes Master, of course. This is my responsibility. And after all…"

An awkward silence took over the call as Blue Jay suddenly fell silent, as if he had just remembered something.

There was definitely something he was actively avoiding…

Jack knew that it was rather unusual for him to stop talking so abruptly, and he wanted to ask what secret he wanted to hide so desperately. But at the same time, Jack didn't want to let anyone know about his own return to the dark underworld.

Thinking that it was better not to ask questions when he himself was not willing to talk about himself, Jack ultimately decided to let it go.

Instead of asking him why he was hesitant to talk, Jack concluded the call;

"Then, I'll catch up with you later, Blue Jay. And yes, thank you again."

With this, he hung up the call without waiting for a response. Just then, a number of notifications popped up on his phone.

There was indeed a notification about money transfer regarding a credit of a million dollars. However, there was a catch: it wasn't his personal account where the money had been sent– rather, it was a shared account between him and Rebecca.

Seeing this, something clicked in his mind and he quickly filled in his account details on the website. Even though he had his suspicions, he wasn't really prepared for what he found after clicking the"Check Balance" button.

Despite a credit of $1 Million, the account balance was only around $300,000– a total of $700,000 was missing! And the most unbelievable part was that the money had been sent less than ten minutes ago!

No matter what, Jack was reluctant to believe that it was really Rebecca behind all this. He had never expected that she would use his money so shamelessly, even when she was the one who wanted to divorce him!

His mind was clouded with hundreds of possibilities, and he didn't know which one to accept… dismissing everything else, he left everything behind and approached the reception desk.

"Good evening sir, how can I help you?"

_____

"Thank you sir, Mrs. Turner's pending bills have been cleared successfully. Please have a good day!"

The cashier's voice rang in his ears and Jack mumbled a barely audible "thank you" as he started walking absentmindedly. The next thing he knew, he was standing outside the hospital premises.

He wanted some answers from Rebecca, and he wanted them now!

She was the woman he had loved, and even if she had found the will to change overnight, she had no right to take away the money that rightfully belonged to him!

And in any case, if she was really with Robert Wendell, it's not like she had any shortage of money, either.

He started walking in the direction of River Valley Apartments… but all of a sudden, he came to an abrupt halt.

If this woman could go to the level of stealing the money that was supposed to be for their daughters, who knows what else she would have done? What if the message hadn't been sent by Anna, but by Rebecca pretending to be her, to give him the wrong address on purpose?

Not knowing what to do next, Jack decided to call and confirm it once. Without thinking too much, he dialed Rebecca's old number from which he had received that message.

After three rings, the call was picked up…

"Hello?"

"Hello, daddy!"

Anna's happiness and disbelief was clear in her voice, as she exclaimed;

"Daddy, I knew you would call! I was hiding in my attic, waiting for you."

"Oh, sweetie! I'm so happy that I can finally talk to you. Are you okay? And how is Dottie? I'm sorry that it took me so long to contact you."

"I'm okay, daddy. But I didn't mind waiting for you, I knew from the beginning that all these people are lying. No matter what my classmates said, I knew that my father is not a lawbreaker. I believe you, daddy!"

Hearing these words from the mouth of his child, Jack's eyes welled up with tears. At least, he had someone in this world who trusted him…

On hearing about her classmates, an idea suddenly appeared in Jack's mind. Yes, Rebecca had taken the money, but what if she wanted to use it for Anna and Dottie's school?

After all, when he had last seen her during her prison visit, she was quite upset about pulling them out of private school. So maybe, she had assumed that's what the money was for.

A sense of regret started to appear in his mind, due to the fact that he had misunderstood Rebecca. But before his guilt could grow any further, Rebecca's voice suddenly called out from the other side, making him alert.

"Anna… Anna?"

"Yes, mom?"

Anna replied after sticking her head out of the attic; while on his end, Jack was listening carefully.

"I am going to the Alpengarde Restaurant for a date with Robby, so lock the doors from inside."

"And yes," she added after a while. "I hope you can take care of your own dinner? Good. Then make something for your sister too."

Jack's fists were clenched as his anger was soaring once again, but he knew that there was no point in talking to Rebecca. In fact, he knew exactly where to target her, to make it hurt.

With his plan in place, Jack asked Anna to stay on hold for a moment, while he took all the money out of their shared account and transferred it all into his personal account.

And then, he quickly sent the amount to his daughter's account, finally feeling like the money was safe now.

"Anna, sweetie, daddy has sent some money into your account. It's for your and Dottie's tuition fee, okay? So don't let anyone use it."

"Yes, daddy! I understand."

"Then, daddy will talk to you later, okay? I miss you and your sister so much, and always remember, daddy loves you."

With this, he hung up the call. Having taken care of the finances, Jack decided to visit the Alpengarde Restaurant and see for himself what Rebecca was up to. He knew he couldn't rest, not until he found out what she wanted to do with his money.
