Ch-9 : The Alpengarde

Jack pulled out a salmon pink silk shirt and dark blue dress pants before leaving for the high end restaurant that his soon to be ex- wife had mentioned on the phone.

He knew that the Alpengarde was a luxurious establishment; and they paid a lot of attention to the way their customers presented themselves.

And so, dressed in a carefully chosen outfit that would allow him to blend in seamlessly, Jack walked through the restaurant's entrance unnoticed.

The crisp fabric clung to him, giving an air of understated elegance, ensuring he avoided any unwanted attention from the watchful eyes of the restaurant owner and guards.

As he entered, the present moment unfolded in front of him like a twisted theater of betrayal.

Jack's sharp eyes caught sight of his wife sitting beside the man whom he would recognize even with his eyes closed– his ex- boss who deserved all the credit for ruining his life!

There she was, in a tight fitting magenta dress that showed off her figure, with her arm completely wrapped around Robert's arm like a snake coiled around the branch of a sandalwood tree.

Right in front of his eyes, she placed a kiss on his cheek, pressing herself against him before saying;

"Happy birthday, darling! You are the best thing to have happened to me this year, and I hope I can make you even half as happy with this gift, as you have made me…"

Saying this, she pulled out a maroon red velvet box, opening the lid to reveal a shiny new watch.

Amidst the clinking of glasses and the hum of restaurant chatter, Jack's keen ears caught on the gossip circulating amongst the guests.

"Did you see that watch she just gave him? What a catch!"

"I don't know how long Rob has been dating her, but she really has an eye for classy gifts."

"And did you hear it's worth $700,000?!"

"Whoa man… what a destiny some people have got. His girlfriend has attractive looks and impeccable taste on top of it!"

"Damn, why do I only get gold diggers? I wish I had someone like her in my life…"

"No no, it's not your fault! It's much more common to find women who expect gifts from their boyfriends but very rarely do you see a lady put in so much effort and give her boyfriend such an expensive gift!"

As these snippets floated through the air, Jack's jaw tightened with each compliment lavished upon his wife and the ex-boss.

The praise only intensified the sting of betrayal he felt, especially the price tag of the watch that echoed in the hushed conversations.

Apparently, it was being sold for $700,000– and a realization clicked in Jack's mind with sharp clarity. This was the exact amount that had mysteriously vanished from his account mere minutes after being credited.

Here he was, thinking that she might have wanted to use this money to pay for her daughter's school… but the reality was something totally different!

It turned out that she was so impatient to take away his money, just to buy a birthday gift for this man, who was the reason for all his misfortunes!

Anger surged within Jack, and his jaw clenched as he observed the exchange; but instead of giving in to the torrent of emotions, Jack tried to keep himself in check.

The air crackled with tension as Jack, unable to contain his simmering anger, approached his ex-wife in the middle of this lavish celebration.

Nobody knew what to expect, as the guests were not really familiar with Rebecca's past. But ignoring everyone else, Jack's gaze bore into her, a mixture of betrayal and disbelief etched across his features.

"What the hell do you think you're doing, Rebecca? You have really got some nerve, to not only steal my money but then to spend it on this scum!"

Rebecca was initially taken aback by Jack's sudden appearance, as she had expected him to be rotting away in prison for at least an year, during which she could do anything she pleased.

But she quickly regained her composure with an air of arrogance.

"How dare you accuse me of stealing, you creep! First, tell me how you even managed to step out of jail! How can they allow a sex offender like you to roam freely in society?"

There were several gasps from the guests and staff gathered there to witness this drama, but Jack didn't back down.

"That's not the answer to my question, is it? I want to know, what gave you the right to take my money without my permission–"

"Oh, enough! I have heard enough of your whining, did you plan to ruin our party?"

Rebecca interrupted him coldly, and continued;

"And as for the money, it is our joint account! Of course I can take the money, how do you expect me to sustain my kids when you got your ass dragged to jail?!"

Jack's voice was laced with incredulity and frustration as he shot back.

"What joint account? You stole that money from my personal account! Don't play innocent now. And this party! Is this any way to–"

Before Jack could even speak more than a few words, Rebecca challenged him;

"I am not answerable to you! And if you really have such a problem, then go ahead! Call the police. I would love to see you explain to them, how you miraculously came up with $700,000."

Rebecca was completely confident that Jack was going to walk away from this confrontation now, because he couldn't possibly have the guts to actually accept her challenge.

In any case, he was nothing more than an ordinary car wash employee, who didn't have any connections or power. In the eight years of their marriage, she had never seen him even handle a hundred thousand dollars at once.

So naturally, there could only be one explanation for this sudden deposit, that he had made some kind of illegal deal with someone. If he had any brains of his own, he would know that it was better to walk away than call the police and willingly get stuck into a legal mess.

With a smirk, she dared;

"And what do you mean by stealing? Please, Jack. I think you've been watching too many crime dramas in that cell of yours. I'm just rewarding someone who appreciates a woman of my caliber. If you think it's illegal, then why don't you call the police and let them sort it out?"
