Consumed by Anger and Hate

Vincent got to the man who was waiting beside the car, "Thank you, sir. Thank you so much for bailing me out back there. Is there anything I can do to repay you for your kindness? I don't mind working for you or running errands on your demands." Vincent said.

"No. I don't need any of that and neither am I the one to thank."

"I don't understand sir. What do you mean? You just paid for..."

"Your father paid, not me. I am only his butler."

Vincent grew speechless, "my dad left his family without saying a word about why he did it. He didn't even reach out to us during the time of his absence and now was the perfect time for him?" Vincent said to the butler.

"I don't care what you say, sir. Nothing is going to make me accept that charity from such a heartless man who caused my mom to be diagnosed with such a disease." Vincent added.

Vincent turned around to leave after he thanked the man one last time.

"You were asking me just minutes ago what you can do to repay me were you not?" the butler said to Vincent.

Vincent stopped walking but didn't turn back either. His heart was consumed by anger and hate for his father.

"Well, this is my request and once you do it, you don't owe me anything." the butler added.

"I'm listening," Vincent said, still not looking back at the butler.

"You have to come with me to go meet your father." the butler voiced, making Vincent hate the situation even more.

Vincent clenched his fists and after some seconds passed, he relaxed physically. Inside, his feelings were still negative and raging.

Vincent got into the back seat of the car and so did the butler. The driver started the car and they got on the road, on their way to see Vincent's father.

They arrived in front of a mansion's gates and got out. The driver had something to attend to and didn't have time to take them passed the gate.

"So where is he? Don't tell me I have to wait under the scorching hot sun like this for that man." Vincent said, already losing his patience.

"Calm down, we just arrived. We haven't even gone inside yet." the butler said.

"Inside? Inside where? Isn't he coming to this spot?" Vincent asked and the butler laughed, much to Vincent's annoyance.

"How do you expect a billionaire to leave the comforts of his home and meet someone outside his home?" the butler asked Vincent.

Vincent scoffed, "Since when did my father become a billionaire?" Vincent asked, unhinged by the revelation.

The butler spun Vincent around to face the mansion fully and he pointed to a name plastered above the gates in golden letters.

"Victor Devine Mansion."

Vincent rolled his eyes, thinking that this was some sort of mean joke from a man who has the same name as his father.

The gates were opened for the butler and Vincent followed him in.

The mansion was painted in no other colours but white and gold. The touch of green was from the plants decorating the sides of the footwalk which they followed to go inside.

Vincent was amazed by the time he entered the mansion. It was even more marvellous on the inside than it was on the outside.

They entered the main living room of the mansion and a man walked in just then.

Vincent turned to the side and saw that it was his father, arms wide open expecting a hug, teary-eyed, and smiling at Vincent.

A wave of different emotions flooded inside of Vincent but none said to him that he was missing his father.

"How can this man live such a luxurious life for all these years without helping his wife or son and then come here expecting a hug from me and having that smile... That stupid smile on his face!" angry thoughts were the only thing hitting Vincent's brain.

With tears in his eyes from recalling all the suffering he went through with his sick mother and how his father was never there for either of them, Vincent walked up to his father, fists clenched and he gave his father a hard punch across the cheek sending his father crashing into the wall behind him.

Vincent grabbed his father by the collar and pinned him against the wall. This was the first time Vincent was physically violent with anyone.

"Fuck you! Do you hear me?! Fuck you!" angry tears ran down Vincent's cheeks as he held up his fist to land another punch on his father's face.

"Vincent!" the butler yelled in shock at the action Vincent chose to take.

Vincent's father coughed up blood from just the first punch and he didn't like the sight of it, "what is wrong with you?! Is this the way you should react after seeing your father who you haven't been with for so many years?!" Mr Devine scolded his son.

"Security!" the butler called out.

"The fuck you just say to me? Oh God! I swear I am going to mess you up so bad that you won't be able to recognise yourself in the mirror!" Vincent yelled at his father and threw a second punch.

To Vincent's disappointment, his hand was held back before the punch could land on his father.

Two security men pulled Vincent off of Mr Devine while Vincent still struggled to pounce on him.

Mr Devine was given wipes by a maid who saw everything unfold and he began wiping off the blood leaving from his nostril and mouth.

"At least now I know I didn't get a weakling as a son. Although, I wonder why you've been behaving as a weakling all these years."

Vincent's eyes widened in realization. His father has been keeping watch on him all those years he was absent.

"Let him go." Mr Devine ordered his security men and they obeyed with no hesitation.

"Now, I trust you enough not to repeat the same mistake of hitting me again." Mr Devine said. "Even though, I know I deserve it but Vincent, I am still your father. Please." Mr Devine added, the time in his voice changing to a sad one.

"So you have been spying on me all my life?" Vincent questioned in disbelief.

"Yes. Is there anything wrong with monitoring my son?" Mr Devine replied.

"So you knew about Mom's condition and did not bother to lift a finger?" Vincent questioned calmly.

Mr Devine hesitated to answer, "Vincent... I don't know how to put this at all. I'm sorry I tried but the guilt wouldn't let me..." Mr Devine tried to explain.

Vincent charged forward but the security men got a hold of him before he could do anything to Mr Devine.

"You cruel bastard! She is... No! She was your wife! How can you be so heartless towards her?!" Vincent shouted.

"Watch your tongue. This is no way to speak to your father. There are reasons behind this that you have no idea of. Please just listen to me just this once and try to put yourself in my shoes." Mr Devine replied but then shut up and turned away immediately.

He ran his fingers through his hair as he struggled to express himself to his son.

"Truth? What truth could ever justify the fact that you abandoned your family?!" Vincent questioned, still fuming with anger.

"Forget it. That is not something you can handle to hear at this point in your life." Mr Devine said and snapped his fingers. The security men let go of Vincent once again.

"I brought you here for a different reason." Mr Devine said.

He turned and faced Vincent, "I want you to live with me as my successor and take over my business and wealth while I retire." Mr Devine said.

Vincent burst out laughing, "Why? Is the guilt from your past abandonment of your family eating you up? If that's the case, fuck you and your wealth! You can die with that guilt! There's no way I'll make things okay for you." Vincent retorted, a sinister smile on his face as he turned away and began to leave.

"You are making a mistake boy!" Devine yelled as Vincent kept walking.

"One that I hope you learn from!" Vincent yelled back, still walking without looking back.

By the time Vincent had gotten out of the mansion, his father had run and caught up to him, "What about the bullying?" Vincent stopped walking, his father held his shoulder back.

"What about the pains, the insults, the humiliation? Are you about to let that slide?" Mr Devine asked.

"I'm willing to go that far. I can never forgive you for all you did." Vincent replied and removed Mr Devine's hand from his shoulder.

"Vincent please stop and listen to me." the butler said.

Vincent turned around and looked at the butler, his face so red from anger and sadness.

"Harold stop. I don't need you to speak for me." Mr Devine said but got ignored.

"Since your father is too weak of a man to share his fast with you then I will." the butler, Harold, said.

"I am all ears." Vincent reluctantly replied.

"He was just like you. Bullied, insulted, beaten up and harassed for being poor. Things even got to the point of those people who hated him finding out where he lived to make it a daily dose of insulting and mocking him publicly."

"Devine couldn't take it anymore and even his wife couldn't. He couldn't bare to see your mother suffer because of him and decided to leave and start afresh, hoping she would find a rich man to take care of you and her the way he couldn't."

"After struggling and finally making it to the top, Devine returned to this place six months ago, the same period your mother was sick. He found out that she refused to marry anyone else and insisted on waiting for him."

"At first, he wanted to help her upfront but with that discovery, he just couldn't bring himself to face any of you. He was ashamed of himself and felt he didn't deserve to have any of you."

"Today, he finally got the courage to face you and he wants to make amends."

"He was already helping your mother with medical bills but we discovered that the medical bills had never reached your mother. Someone was preventing your father's money from reaching your mother and we are yet to discover who from the hospital is responsible." Harold explained.

Tears rushed out of Vincent's eyes as he finished listening to Harold's explanation of the situation.

Vincent's entire body weakened and his legs gave way. He fell to the ground and cried. Even Devine couldn't hold back and went to wrap his son in a hug and cried along.

"I'm sorry I didn't give you a chance to speak. I'm sorry for hitting you." Vincent apologized.

"I understand everything, son. You don't have to apologize. It's normal for you to react that way." Devine replied, hugging Vincent tight. Vincent hugged him back as well.

After it all died down, Mr Devine composed himself and asked again if Vincent would move in with him and accept to become his heir.

"I will give you my answer after speaking to my mother about it. She should have a say too." Vincent replied.

"I just hope she forgives me for leaving like that. I just couldn't bare the pressure. I was stupid but I swear I had good intentions." Mr Devine said to Vincent.

"I have forgiven you. I'm sure she will too." Vincent said.

Harold smiled as he watched the two.

"Goodbye for now," Vincent said and waved at them with a smile on his face. He was happy after a long time in his life.
