CHAPTER 5: THE STEWARD

“Of course.” Mr. Falls stated firmly.

“I want to initiate a transaction for the transfer of assets and I would love to withdraw some cash,” Henry said. “Also, I’ll need responses because I’ve got some questions to ask. This is my first time doing this.” He added.

Mr. Falls arched a brow. “And how much in total are we talking about?”

Henry cocked his head. “I think 10 billion dollars.”

Mr. Falls sprung from his chair. It was the second time he had done that. The first time was when he saw the voucher. He began to stammer.

“10 billion? Mr. Parker that’s way above our pay grade and since the inception of this bank, I’m not sure if a transaction has occurred.”

Henry said nothing.

“Why don’t you give me a moment?” Mr. Falls requested and quickly pulled out his phone from one of the table cabinets. “Let me give the CEO a call.”

Henry nodded in agreement. Mr. Falls stood up and quickly dashed out.

Meanwhile, Stacey was holding a small tray with a cup of coffee on it and was headed towards Mr. Fall’s office when she saw him at a corner beside the door. He was facing the wall and was on the phone. Stacey had no idea what he was talking about but she was able to pick some words from Mr. Parker. Some of the words she heard were 10 billion dollars and transfer of assets.

She sighed and was about to aim for the door when she saw Mr. Falls nodding repeatedly as if the person he was speaking to on the phone was right before him.

“Yes, CEO.” Stacey heard Mr. Falls.

Whoever that boy was, Stacey concluded that he must be a big shot for Mr. Falls to initiate the CEO into the matter.

She took a deep breath and walked into the office. When she saw Henry, she began to have flashes of how she had treated him earlier, and at that point, Stacey felt that she was on the verge of losing her job. She quickly threw her gaze to the floor.

It then dawned on her that she was supposed to hand over the coffee to Henry. She began to walk up to the desk with her hands trembling. She finally placed the tray on the table ensuring she didn’t spill the content and then moved aside while her hands kept trembling.

Henry grabbed the coffee and took a sip. He gave a satisfactory nod. Stacey felt at ease for a while.

She turned to the door and realized that it was still shut. Mr. Falls was still on the phone outside. Stacey quickly hurried toward Henry and fell to her knees.

Henry turned toward her and noticed that her face was pale, unlike the first time he saw her when he walked into the bank.

Stacey joined her palms together before Henry like she was praying to him. “Mr. Parker.” She began with tears welling up in her eyes. “Please forgive me. It’s my entire fault. Please don’t tell Mr. Falls anything.”

“Stacey, what are you doing?” Mr. Falls yelled from the door. He had just ended his call and had barged in. “Let him go!”

“I’m sorry sir.” Stacey apologized to Mr. Falls.

“How dare you bother Mr. Parker?” Mr. Falls yelled at her. He pointed outside. “Get out.”

Stacey didn’t move an inch. She knew that if she dared step out, she wouldn’t be called back to work the next day. Instead, she crawled toward Henry and attempted to grab his sleeve. She continued to beg bitterly. “Mr. Parker, I swear to God it wasn’t my intention to cause you any trouble earlier. I’m so sorry.”

Henry dropped his cup of coffee on the table and faced Stacey. “That’s okay.” He said.  He had wanted to make things difficult for Stacey because of the way she treated him but now, his mind had changed. He was human after all.

He paid attention to Stacey and noticed that she was hugging her silk shirt desperately and the tears she had been fighting to hold back were already rolling down her cheeks. Henry sighed.

Yes, Stacey had been mean to him but was it necessary to get down to her level? It was not worth it. Henry ruled out.

Again, he sighed and then looked Stacey straight in the face. “You can leave. I do not take this matter to heart.”

Stacey leaped with joy. Henry gave a faint smile.

Stacey bowed and began to thank Henry. She hurried out.

Mr. Falls shook his head.

Henry turned around, wondering about the power of money. Indeed, money could change the fate of an ordinary person and he was just the perfect example.

Henry then heard a hearty laughter behind him. “Mr. Henry. I was looking forward to seeing you.”

When Henry turned around, he saw a lively old man at the door, dressed in a black tuxedo. The man was grinning so widely that Henry thought his cheeks would hurt. The man was about 70 years old and his grey hair was neatly combed. Henry darted his gaze from the man’s big black bowtie to the cane in his left hand.

The old man began taking steps toward Henry with his face shining brightly. Henry was certain that he had never come in contact with the man but yet, he was feeling some sense of familiarity toward the strange man.

“And you are?” demanded Henry with his left brow raised.

Mr. Falls hurried toward the man. “He is the president and…

The old man lifted his palm in Mr. Fall’s face, shutting him up. “You can leave now.”

After Mr. Falls stepped out, the man pulled the chair next to Henry and sat.

“It feels like a dozen years. No wonder you don’t recognize me anymore. I’m your late father’s steward.”

A lump suddenly developed in Henry’s throat.

“You’ve really grown. I remember holding you in my arms. You were so little back then.”

Henry gasped. “Uncle Nate?”

The old man winked.
