Chapter 3 : Agreement

Joe took a deep breath, exhaling the cigarette smoke to escape his lips. He was in the lobby of the Seattle Group, the company he had been frequenting for the past three months, to distribute property sales brochures.

"Shh, what else did he come here for? Doesn't he know any shame at all?" One of the company employees who had just passed Joe to get into the elevator whispered to his friend.

"Yes! Moreover, he smokes like that. Doesn't he know that smoking is not allowed in this company?!" Another employee snorted in annoyance, narrowing his eyes as a sign of dislike for Joe's behavior.

Joe, who heard that, immediately put out his cigarette, then walked towards the receptionist, watching him with a pronounced expression of dislike on her face.

"Good afternoon, is Mr. Lucas in his office? I have an appointment to meet him this afternoon," Joe asked flatly. He tried to get rid of the uncomfortable feeling of being bullied.

"Mr. Lucas? He's not here!" The receptionist replied curtly.

"Really? But I already have an appointment with Mr. Lucas. He said that I could meet him today." Joe was adamant. He didn't want to give up so easily because his pride and his wife's depended on this meeting.

"I said no, meaning no! Are your ears deaf? Or is your brain so useless that you can't understand what I'm saying?" The receptionist started insulting Joe.

"Look at that!" The receptionist pointed to the bulletin board, which usually contained important information. There, Joe's picture was printed with the words "beggar" underneath.

Joe, who saw the photo, was immediately wide-eyed. As he remembered, one week ago, none of his photographs were posted there. Especially with the words "beggar" underneath. "What the hell is this? Why is my picture displayed here?" He walked over to the bulletin board, picked up some pictures, and tore them up.

"What? Why are you angry? Aren't you a beggar? You always come to this company by heart, handing out brochures describing the properties you want to sell. Isn't what you did then worthy of being called a beggar? You asked the bosses here to buy the properties sold by your company, including our boss, Mr. Lucas!"

"I work as a marketing staff. It's only natural that I distribute brochures containing properties for sale. Where's the fault, then? Besides, I already had an appointment to meet Mr. Lucas in this office. You can't insult me like this! I'm human, and I have pride!" Joe pointed at himself, showing he was not in the mood to play games with the receptionist.

"Are you sure that you still have self-respect?" A man said. Hudson, an exemplary employee about to be recommended as the manager of the Seattle Group, approached the two of them.

The man came with the same look in his eyes, a look of contempt and disdain for Joe. "Are you sure you still have self-respect? Especially after everyone knows you're a husband who can only take refuge behind your wife's back."

The receptionist burst out laughing. She laughed at Joe, who looked very embarrassed. "So, the rumors turned out to be true, sir? The man who often begged the bosses to buy the properties his company was selling was just a loser?" The woman laughed once again.

"Shut up! I'm not that bad!" Joe, who felt very embarrassed, snapped at her.

"You don't need to defend yourself anymore. You're just a loser, man. Even if you deny it, it won't change the truth. Everyone also knows that you are a loser, a coward!"

Joe gritted his teeth in annoyance. "As you wish. I'll go alone to meet with Mr. Lucas." He turned around and then prepared to get into the elevator. Unfortunately, Hudson immediately pushed his body. He almost fell. Luckily, he could hold his weight to avoid falling to the floor.

"My boss can't possibly be willing to see you. What does he want to see you for? To buy a property? CK, he's too busy to buy that cheap property you're offering!" Hudson clicked his tongue, then glared at Joe, who managed to stand up, even though he hoped the man would fall, and he could humiliate him even more.

"You'd better get out of here!" Hudson continued.

"I'm not leaving here before meeting with Mr. Lucas. He's already promised to meet me to buy the property I've offered him. And your boss is not just buying one property, but 100!" Joe raised his tone of voice a few octaves. His patience was running out after his body almost fell to the floor.

"100 properties? Hahahaha. Are you kidding me? What would Mr. Lucas buy that many properties for? If he wanted to buy that many properties, he would have bought them without your help. Why would he buy from you? You could have deceived him, especially since you're just a new staff." Hudson underestimated Joe's work.

"And you know what? I'd rather believe cats can lay eggs than Mr. Lucas buying 100 properties with your help! I'll lick your shoes if that happens!"

"Never underestimate someone's ability, let alone someone else's work. And watch what you say because it could be your words that will ruin you one day!" Joe tried to defend himself.

"Why, you want to say that you have skills? What abilities do you have? You only got the job because of your wife's help. No need to dodge and defend yourself anymore. Everyone in this town knows about it."

Joe was silent. He didn't expect the news about him getting a job because of his wife's help to spread widely. Even the staff from other companies knew about it. He was very embarrassed when he realized that he had no self-respect in the eyes of others.

"Never mind. You'd better get out of here! I'm sick of looking at your face! I'm allergic to meeting people who are cowards and losers." Hudson clapped his hands twice as a code to the security guards to get Joe out of there.

Joe refused. He tried to escape by going towards the elevator. He wanted his efforts to come to the company to continue in vain. He had to sell the property today successfully.

"Go get him!" Hudson shouted. He groaned angrily when he saw Joe approaching the elevator and pressing the button. Unfortunately, he had to wait several minutes for the elevator to open.

"Get him out of here!" Hudson shouted back. He smiled happily as Joe was caught.

The two security guards pulled Joe's body roughly, then dropped to the floor just like a criminal.

"Akh, it hurts!" Joe groaned in pain as the security guards pulled his hands back.

"Quickly take him away from here. Don't let him come again. If you see him coming here again, kick him out. If he resists, hit him!" Hudson laughed with satisfaction. He shook his palm as a code for the security guards to eliminate Joe immediately.

Just as Joe was about to be pulled to his feet and violently pushed out of the company lobby, Lucas came out of the elevator, and the man was shocked at the sight.

"What's going on? What have you guys done, huh?!" Lucas shouted in annoyance. He went straight to Joe and helped the man escape from the security guards.

"What's going on, Hudson? Why are you treating my guests like this? Do you have no brains?" Lucas looked at Hudson with an angry look in his eyes. "You too! Why didn't you tell me that someone wanted to see me?" He looked at the receptionist with the same look in his eyes.

"I'm sorry, sir, but he-"

"There's no excuse! You're too presumptuous to treat my guest this badly! Don't you know that he is ...."
