Chapter 2: Magical Awakening

Today is the day of magical awakening.

As far as I understood, the Magic and Rift Association uses some stones to determine our affinity and grade of magic. There was no mention of what those stones were. The information about those stones is restricted.

As of now, I am sitting at my usual table in the classroom. Today is the day of awakening that happens once a year. All the students are under the intense pressure of what would happen.

It is known that the stones used for awakening varied in quality. The higher the quality, the costlier the stone is.

The students get a chance to use stones of better quality than that of those who can’t afford school. Only Tier-1 cities could afford premium quality awakening stones.

In tier-2 cities like Pearl City, the schools where wealthy students attend, schools cover the cost of high-quality awakening stones. The city bears the cost of using medium-quality stones for the children who attend schools for the poor and other such lads who can’t afford the poor schools.

As the tier goes down, so does the quality of the stone.

The quality of a stone increases the chance of awakening, but there may be a chance of an increase in the grade of magic.

Damon attended Pearl City school, the most costly school in the city. It was there he was bullied and got beaten.

After I entered this world, I immediately changed schools. I joined the Downtown school, which is a school for the poor.

There isn’t much difference between schools. One is filled with updated technological items such as projectors, virtual combat training, etc. At the same time, the other has no such technical things.

Here there was no bullying but most avoided me like the plague. I was not interested in them. They are only the people who I saw in school. As they aren’t either friendly or bullied me, I have no hate towards them, but if I get strong, I won’t be helping them.

The reason most avoided me was that they were afraid of major families. Some believed the rumors that tainted my parents’ names, spread by those assholes, and saw me like a plague.

There are only a few who exchanged a few words with me.

---

“Ahem”

Hearing the sound, everyone in the class straightened. It was their homeroom teacher. He taught our class about magic.

Though magical studies are of no importance in school, it plays a major role after school if one has a magic affinity.

Accompanying the homeroom teacher, there were two people whom I had never seen before. One was an old man, and the other looked young, no more than a few years older than me. I have no idea who they are, but judging from their attire, the old man is from the Magic and Rift Association, while the young one should be from Mayor’s office.

The homeroom teacher spoke, “Students, as you know, today, you get a chance to become something great in the future. So, without further ado, let us begin the awakening. I’ll call you one by one, so be quiet until then.”

Hearing that, the entire class is pin-drop silent. Nothing but the students’ nervous breathing could be heard.

An assistant entered the room, walked onto the platform, placed two square-shaped black stones on the table, and promptly exited the room. There are runes on both stones, but I couldn’t say what they are and what for.

“These are the stones that determine your future. First, Claire Riken, please come onto the platform.”

A red-haired girl stood up and walked to the platform. She has a fiery nature and loves to beat up everyone, even for a slight issue. In fact, she did beat most of the boys until the principal reprimanded her. After that, she learned how to beat others without leaving injuries. I don’t think there is a need to explain what happened after.

After Claire reached the platform, the teacher spoke, “Place one hand on one stone and the other hand on another stone. After that, close your eyes and concentrate on the right stone in front of you. You would feel the energy flowing into your body. It’s normal, so don’t panic and lose concentration. In the end, you feel the energy leaving both hands.”

Claire proceeded as the teacher explained. After two minutes, one could see that the runes glowed.

The teacher announced, “Congrats, Claire, your magical affinity is for Fire Element. The grade is Violet,” he turned around and said, “You saw what happened here. Claire’s affinity is the Fire element, determined by one of the stones and the grade by another. Violet is the highest of all grades, followed by Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, and Red.”

“Moving forward, Stella Jacks….Fire, Blue grade.”

“Thomas Wingroot….Earth, Violet grade.”

“Mariam Dane….Wind, Blue grade.”

“Dean Westborn…Wind, Orange grade.”

Most of the students got the blue grade, a few Violet. The teacher is happy because of how the awakening is going on. For some reason, the home-room teacher looked at the old man every once in a while.

“Next, Damon Oswyn”

Finally, my turn; I hope I find my golden goose. I went up to the platform and did what the teacher explained before. I closed my eyes and placed one hand on each. I suddenly felt an inward flow of energy entering my body from one of the stones.

When I opened my eyes and looked around, there was nothing. All I could see was a small white ball shape in the distance. I know that it is my magic crystal. It is what would be shown to others by the awakening stone.

I tried to check it, and I felt chill. I immediately understood by that what my affinity is; it’s Ice. I still wanted to check my grade, so I proceeded towards it.

It’s YELLOW, fucking yellow. God damn it. Why god? Why can’t my life be a little better than before?

Suddenly I saw golden lines appear in front of me.

Ding!

We are taught in our magical studies that during the magical awakening process, we’ll enter our subconscious or spiritual place or sometimes referred to as the core. It is where the magic takes root. We can distinguish it by looking at its color. The magic root’s shape will be the same for everyone; it seems like a small ball. The only difference is the color. Mine looked white, snow-white. I have an idea of what it is, but only when I touch it can, I clearly discern what it is. When I tried to reach the crystal, it felt cold. The more I reduced the distance, the more coldly I felt, but with a bit of warmth in it. From the other one’s memories, his mother’s affinity is Ice. The feeling is the same as when his mother used to hug him. It seems I got the magic affinity from my mother. Though the other one’s parents died even before I came here, their memories are the only ones I had for parents in both lives. So I accepted them as my parents. Sadly, I didn’t get a rare affinity, but

“Almighty Lord, as in the one who created us?” [Hmm, I don’t think he created you or, for that matter, no one from this entire galaxy either.] “Then why did you call him Almighty Lord?” [Hahaha, did you think to compare the Almighty Lord with the mere creators of a few lower worlds? He stands above them. He once was a creator of High planets and galaxies, but now he…wait, sorry, I can’t divulge any more on that matter.] “Fine, can you tell me about the system, its functions, etc.?” [Ofcourse, I’ll answer anything pertaining to that as long as such information is restricted for you to know.] “I understood most of the system, but I don’t understand a few of them. First, there is the shop tab which is showing as locked. How to unlock it and how to buy anything from the shop?” [It’s so simple; all you have to do is to become a Level-1 magician. Once that happens, the shop will be opened for you. You can buy items from the shop using Shop Points.] “Shop Points, Seriously? Can’t you

Rod’s words made me crash to the ground. It felt like someone poured cold water on me. When I heard that my golden goose could help me alter the levels of anything, I was on cloud nine. I know it’s not worth arguing with him. So I proceeded to ask questions. “Rod, what’s the use of that database? It’s only empty.” [Oh, it sure is now, but it will be permanently saved in the database once you learn something. You’ll never forget anything that you have learned.] “That sure sounds nice, but I don’t think I can learn much in such a short time. Even the magicians at the pinnacle live utmost for two hundred years. So it’s not much use.” [Hahaha, you sure make me laugh. The magicians at the pinnacle live for thousands of years]. Rod laughed as if he had heard the joke of the century. “What do you mean by that?” [The magicians whom you think are at the pinnacle haven’t reached the pinnacle stage, they barely set foot out of the Primary Realm. Hearing when you said pinnacle magicians, I

Now that I can’t do anything, I’ll just sleep for tonight. Anyhow my original plan didn’t involve me meditating so that I could form orbit and satellite. Now that I need to wait so that my points refill, and then I can check if there are grades above Purple. Now that there wasn’t anything for me to do, I quickly fell asleep on my bed. --- I woke up early in the morning and did my daily exercises. What many magicians do is not work on their bodies. A magician increases his physique whenever he reaches a new level, so that is what everyone does, and this is their weakness. Compared to other warriors, a magician’s body is weak. There are few who use weapons embued with magic, who had to work on their physique. Usually, these are the ones who happened to have low magic grades. When I do these, everyone will be thinking me as someone weak. Either they bully me or don’t pay any attention. I won’t care for those latter guys even if they are dying, but the ones who bully would feel my w

What the hell was that? A new mission appeared, but Rod said that missions only appear after the missions tab is available at level-2. I’m happy that a mission appeared before that ridiculous requirement was fulfilled. On top of that, the mission states to inquire about the beast tide and my parents’ death. Does that mean there is foul play? I had my doubts about their deaths. From what I know, they killed a lot of overlord beasts before, one on one. Sure the lord beasts would trouble them with their numbers but for both of them to die at the same time felt wrong. The fight happened right outside the city. Even if one of them were injured, the other would have pulled both to the healers at the walls. They could have been healed and joined the fight again. The members of major families would have filled their spots for a time since the elders of those families are on par with my parents’ strength. Added to that, Thomas found out that the families were behind the rumors about my par

It fucking hurts. Damn, I forgot about that. They give us incredible power but only after causing the MC pain. How the hell does one survive such pain? After a few minutes of tormenting, the pain finally subsided, and I fell to the floor. When I woke up, it was already late evening. Damn, I was unconscious for hours; if this happens out in the wild, I sure will die. It’s better to use any reward when I’m in a safe zone. Now let’s check what the eye does. I went and stood in front of the mirror. Hmm, there is no change. If I remember, eye color changes but not necessarily. From the description, the vision gets enhanced; let’s check. I went to the window and looked at the city. There is nothing new. Did the eye fail? Maybe I have to say magic words? I started to say some random words. ‘Activate’ ‘Begin’ ‘Open Sesame’ Maybe I should say the name. ‘Eye of Vision, activate.’ Suddenly the vision changed. I could see through the walls and see what people could do. I shifted my sig

I should concentrate on the low-level part of the book, which is meant for beginners like me, or I may become brain-dead if I try to read the levels which aren’t meant for me. As I got immersed in these two books, time flew by. Nine more days were gone before I even got to start my meditation to become a magician. That means I have twenty more days to become a magician and learn a skill to perform on recruitment day. This made Thomas and Mary worry about me. They only calmed down after my assurance that everything would be fine. I know they only appeared to be calm, but their hearts were not. During these nine days, I used the points to increase my Essence and Intellect while trying to understand the magical formation. Yes, Essence stopped increasing after reaching the value of nine. The Next Morning I woke up early to do routine body exercises. Though I can increase my stats with points, if I stay lazy and don’t do things, my body will go stiff. I’ll become a statue that moves in one direction. I would be the easiest moving target in history. It’s not the only reason, I should keep up appearances. If I appear lazy and suddenly grew stronger, everyone will suspect that I have treasured. All eyes will turn towards me. Before becoming strong, I need to keep the stronger eyes away. If they see that I was improving like every other magician, they won’t pay much attention. When I become the strongest, even if they think that I possess treasures, they can’t hurt me in any way. After my exercises, I took bath to clean myself and put on the new academic wear. The clothes have runes, which adjusted to our bodies pretty easily. This would reduce the need to buy new clothes every time the body has slight improvement. This is one of my recent concerns. After I started

When I looked around, I saw that everyone was getting into formation. While this was happening, I saw that there is an old man standing in front of us. Seeing them both Claire and I followed suit. As everyone stood in formation, the old man spoke, “Welcome to the THORN HILL MAGICAL ACADEMY. My name is Rupert Dyne and I work here as the HEADMASTER.” When the students heard that everyone gasped. Rupert Dyne is one of the legends that are alive. He is a Level-9 Magician but some say he crossed that level. There are rumors of levels that are beyond Level-9 but they remained rumors. No one came out and said that they crossed to a level beyond Level-9. So the realms that lay beyond stayed in the rumors realm. I shouldn’t think about that for now. The only way to confirm is to first become a Level-9 Magician. Anything else can wait for now. “I know many of you have arrived from far places and you are tired, so I’ll keep my speech simple. I told Mary and Thomas to be careful on the morning of my departure. One reason my home was safe was because of the association. It’s not like they cared about my safety, but they didn’t want the city to think that the safety of the people was compromised. Even though there are many who see me with disgust, there are few who don’t believe in those rumors. If something happened to me in the city, a small spark could burn the image of the association. Now that I leave for the academy, they don’t need to be concerned deeply about my safety. I repeatedly told them not to wander far and never at night. If someone comes to visit, don’t let them inside at any cost. They understood my concern. Even for others, my grade is Yellow; my performance has definitely caught their eyes, though I tried to avoid that. As I returned to my position, the day progressed without many excitements. At the end of the day, the principal posted our names list with the academies that were interested in us. I checked mine first and saw that only one academy was interested in me, and it was not even in the top three. I checked other student names, and though the top academy recruited fewer students or no students, the other two were eager to get many students. Pearl City Magic Academy, I can understand, but what about the other two? Why didn’t they offer to recruit me? It wasn’t my grade because one of the students with a grade the same as me got the offer. I even performed better than him, better than

I used all the points I acquired during these ten days to increase my Mana capacity. After all, the more Mana one has, the more spells one can cast. Above that, there isn’t a device to determine one’s Mana. Only the magician can estimate the number. I’ll be safe as they won’t check the number of spells cast. Of course, casting powerful spells requires a large amount of Mana, but as far anyone knows, there are only one or two Level-1 spells that require huge Mana and none of them are of Ice element. The moment I opened the shop section, I felt like I was cheated. The items looked good, but the prices were unbelievable. I agree with you, but you intend to go extreme. It may hinder your champion.” Hearing them, the old man Amerus snorted. To him, someone to reach the peak of existence has to be strong and independent without help from anyone. --- ‘Yawn’ It was noon when I woke up. My body felt relaxed, and the stress was gone.
