Chapter 3: Golden Goose

We are taught in our magical studies that during the magical awakening process, we’ll enter our subconscious or spiritual place or sometimes referred to as the core.

It is where the magic takes root. We can distinguish it by looking at its color. The magic root’s shape will be the same for everyone; it seems like a small ball. The only difference is the color.

Mine looked white, snow-white. I have an idea of what it is, but only when I touch it can, I clearly discern what it is.

When I tried to reach the crystal, it felt cold. The more I reduced the distance, the more coldly I felt, but with a bit of warmth in it. From the other one’s memories, his mother’s affinity is Ice. The feeling is the same as when his mother used to hug him.

It seems I got the magic affinity from my mother. Though the other one’s parents died even before I came here, their memories are the only ones I had for parents in both lives. So I accepted them as my parents.

Sadly, I didn’t get a rare affinity, but Ice is a powerful one. So there was nothing much to think about.

I think now I have to check the grade of my affinity. I closed the distance between me and the crystal, so I could touch it.

What the hell happened to my grade?

Why is my grade yellow?

Why God? Why are you doing this to me?

Shouldn’t I be given a golden goose when I transmigrated?

Right then, golden lines formed before his eyes.

Ding!

When I saw that, I instinctively knew that as what everyone referred to as SYSTEM, my golden goose.

I clicked on Status with a thought.

Huh? Why are there + and – signs?

Before I could think, I was pulled out from the subconscious.

“Damon Oswyn…Ice, Yellow grade,” the homeroom teacher announced.

Damn it. Now I’m only yellow grade, me getting a spot in the best magic academy went up in fumes.

Every student started mumbling when they heard my grade.

“Nothing to wonder; a child of thrash is also a thrash.”

Hearing that, many laughed at me.

I could hear those comments and taunts, but they are but frogs in the well.

“Silence all of you, or else I’ll write you off as hollows,” shouted the old man. Hollows are people who don’t have the ability to use magic affinity. It is the term used for the lowest of magic people inside the magic community. Instantly everyone was silenced with fear.

Hollows have magic, but they can’t manifest any magic. They can only live as ordinary people who have no magic affinity. They have a few advantages over ordinary citizens, such as magic resistance and the ability to use magic crystals in alchemy and smithing. So most of them settle in one of those professions.

Even though these are promising professions and one can earn a lot, they have to depend on other magicians to obtain those crystals without magic.

“Next…”

Dejectedly I left the platform and took back my seat. Though I lost a chance of gaining a great future is gone, I am not sad. For now, I have a golden goose.

I have to check it out. So instead of paying attention to class, I thought about my goose.

Hmm, looks like there are four slots. I already checked the status tab once, though not thoroughly.

There is a Database and a Shop tab, and the fourth is grayed out, unlike other tabs, which are golden in color. The only known thing about the fourth tab is its locked Status.

Like the fourth, the third tab is also locked, but the word SHOP is written on it. From the novels I read back on earth, I most likely have to achieve something to unlock it, and probably the same goes for the fourth tab.

Now the database tab, let’s check it.

Huh, it’s empty. Looks like I have to fill it.

Now let’s check my Status.

My Status is low. Every attribute is considered ordinary. The only notable thing is my innate skill, Ice Dragon. An innate skill is much more potent than the skill obtained through other means.

What’s this? What’s with + and – signs?

While I was pondering, I heard a mighty voice.

[Greetings, Young warrior.]

Anyone who hears something like this who be startled. They may even piss in their pants. I would have too, if not for reading those novels.

“Hello.”

[Young Warrior, you aren’t afraid when you hear my voice?], the voice was puzzled.

“No, why would I? I was expecting you, though not 100%.”

[You were expecting me?]. This time the voice has no idea what to think about.

“Yes, don’t think much about it. What should I call you?”

[You may address me as the Mighty Rod.]

Hmm, that somehow felt wrong.

“IS that your real name?”

[I’m Rodimus, the third. I’m the mightiest of all, Rodimus. So everyone calls me Mighty Rod.]

“How about I call you Rod?”

[I like Mighty Rod, but whatever, it’s not like forever.]

“What do you mean by that?”

[I’ll stay till midnight and will be gone. Unless something of great importance happens, I won’t appear again.]

“What?”

[Did you not understand what I just said to you?]

“I did, sorry. So you’ll tell me about anything that I ask?”

[Not everything. Not even I have access to everything, and some things are restricted to be spread.]

“Ok. Can you tell me who is behind all this?”

[Of course, who do you think it is? it’s the Almighty Lord.]

He stands above them. He once was a creator of High planets and galaxies, but now he…wait, sorry, I can’t divulge any more on that matter.] “Fine, can you tell me about the system, its functions, etc.?” [Ofcourse, I’ll answer anything pertaining to that as long as such information is restricted for you to know.] “I understood most of the system, but I don’t understand a few of them. First, there is the shop tab which is showing as locked. How to unlock it and how to buy anything from the shop?” [It’s so simple; all you have to do is to become a Level-1 magician. Once that happens, the shop will be opened for you. You can buy items from the shop using Shop Points.] “Shop Points, Seriously? Can’t you

Rod’s words made me crash to the ground. It felt like someone poured cold water on me. When I heard that my golden goose could help me alter the levels of anything, I was on cloud nine. I know it’s not worth arguing with him. So I proceeded to ask questions. “Rod, what’s the use of that database? It’s only empty.” [Oh, it sure is now, but it will be permanently saved in the database once you learn something. You’ll never forget anything that you have learned.] “That sure sounds nice, but I don’t think I can learn much in such a short time. Even the magicians at the pinnacle live utmost for two hundred years. So it’s not much use.” [Hahaha, you sure make me laugh. The magicians at the pinnacle live for thousands of years]. Rod laughed as if he had heard the joke of the century. “What do you mean by that?” [The magicians whom you think are at the pinnacle haven’t reached the pinnacle stage, they barely set foot out of the Primary Realm. Now that I can’t do anything, I’ll just sleep for tonight. Anyhow my original plan didn’t involve me meditating so that I could form orbit and satellite. Now that I need to wait so that my points refill, and then I can check if there are grades above Purple. Now that there wasn’t anything for me to do, I quickly fell asleep on my bed. --- I woke up early in the morning and did my daily exercises. What many magicians do is not work on their bodies. A magician increases his physique whenever he reaches a new level, so that is what everyone does, and this is their weakness. Compared to other warriors, a magician’s body is weak. There are few who use weapons embued with magic, who had to work on their physique. Usually, these are the ones who happened to have low magic grades. When I do these, everyone will be thinking me as someone weak. Either they bully me or don’t pay any attention. I won’t care for those latter guys even if they are dying, but the ones who bully would feel my w

What the hell was that? A new mission appeared, but Rod said that missions only appear after the missions tab is available at level-2. I’m happy that a mission appeared before that ridiculous requirement was fulfilled. On top of that, the mission states to inquire about the beast tide and my parents’ death. Does that mean there is foul play? I had my doubts about their deaths. From what I know, they killed a lot of overlord beasts before, one on one. Sure the lord beasts would trouble them with their numbers but for both of them to die at the same time felt wrong. The fight happened right outside the city. Even if one of them were injured, the other would have pulled both to the healers at the walls. They could have been healed and joined the fight again. The members of major families would have filled their spots for a time since the elders of those families are on par with my parents’ strength. Added to that, Thomas found out that the families were behind the rumors about my par

It fucking hurts. Damn, I forgot about that. They give us incredible power but only after causing the MC pain. How the hell does one survive such pain? After a few minutes of tormenting, the pain finally subsided, and I fell to the floor. When I woke up, it was already late evening. Damn, I was unconscious for hours; if this happens out in the wild, I sure will die. It’s better to use any reward when I’m in a safe zone. Now let’s check what the eye does. I went and stood in front of the mirror. Hmm, there is no change. If I remember, eye color changes but not necessarily. From the description, the vision gets enhanced; let’s check. I went to the window and looked at the city. There is nothing new. Did the eye fail? Maybe I have to say magic words? I started to say some random words. ‘Activate’ ‘Begin’ ‘Open Sesame’ Maybe I should say the name. ‘Eye of Vision, activate.’ Suddenly the vision changed. I could see through the walls and see what people could do. I shifted my sig

The book is divided into three parts; low level, mid-level, and high level. The low-level part is for beginners, and from the description, mid and high levels are out of my reach for now. I should concentrate on the low-level part of the book, which is meant for beginners like me, or I may become brain-dead if I try to read the levels which aren’t meant for me. As I got immersed in these two books, time flew by. Nine more days were gone before I even got to start my meditation to become a magician. That means I have twenty more days to become a magician and learn a skill to perform on recruitment day. This made Thomas and Mary worry about me. They only calmed down after my assurance that everything would be fine. I know they only appeared to be calm, but their hearts were not. During these nine days, I used the points to increase my Essence and Intellect while trying to understand the magical formation. Yes, Essence stopped increasing after reaching the value of nine. The Next Morning I woke up early to do routine body exercises. Though I can increase my stats with points, if I stay lazy and don’t do things, my body will go stiff. I’ll become a statue that moves in one direction. I would be the easiest moving target in history. It’s not the only reason, I should keep up appearances. If I appear lazy and suddenly grew stronger, everyone will suspect that I have treasured. All eyes will turn towards me. Before becoming strong, I need to keep the stronger eyes away. If they see that I was improving like every other magician, they won’t pay much attention. When I become the strongest, even if they think that I possess treasures, they can’t hurt me in any way. After my exercises, I took bath to clean myself and put on the new academic wear. The clothes have runes, which adjusted to our bodies pretty easily. This would reduce the need to buy new clothes every time the body has slight improvement. This is one of my recent concerns. After I started

    Chapter 16: The Headmaster

When I looked around, I saw that everyone was getting into formation. While this was happening, I saw that there is an old man standing in front of us. Seeing them both Claire and I followed suit. As everyone stood in formation, the old man spoke, “Welcome to the THORN HILL MAGICAL ACADEMY. My name is Rupert Dyne and I work here as the HEADMASTER.” When the students heard that everyone gasped. Rupert Dyne is one of the legends that are alive. He is a Level-9 Magician but some say he crossed that level. There are rumors of levels that are beyond Level-9 but they remained rumors. No one came out and said that they crossed to a level beyond Level-9. So the realms that lay beyond stayed in the rumors realm. I shouldn’t think about that for now. The only way to confirm is to first become a Level-9 Magician. Anything else can wait for now. “I know many of you have arrived from far places and you are tired, so I’ll keep my speech simple. I told Mary and Thomas to be careful on the morning of my departure. One reason my home was safe was because of the association. It’s not like they cared about my safety, but they didn’t want the city to think that the safety of the people was compromised. Even though there are many who see me with disgust, there are few who don’t believe in those rumors. If something happened to me in the city, a small spark could burn the image of the association. Now that I leave for the academy, they don’t need to be concerned deeply about my safety. I repeatedly told them not to wander far and never at night. If someone comes to visit, don’t let them inside at any cost. They understood my concern. Even for others, my grade is Yellow; my performance has definitely caught their eyes, though I tried to avoid that. I walked to the open space to demonstrate what I’m to these buggers so that I have a chance to be recruited by the top academies. I walked back to my position, I could hear everyone mumbling, but many were surprised that I could seamlessly use a skill. It is not something many achieved at this point in time. As I returned to my position, the day progressed without many excitements. At the end of the day, the principal posted our names list with the academies that were interested in us. I checked mine first and saw that only one academy was interested in me, and it was not even in the top three. I checked other student names, and though the top academy recruited fewer students or no students, the other two were eager to get many students. Pearl City Magic Academy, I can understand, but what about the other two? Why didn’t they offer to recruit me? It wasn’t my grade because one of the students with a grade the same as me got the offer. I even performed better than him, better than

    Chapter 13: Recruitment (1)

I used all the points I acquired during these ten days to increase my Mana capacity. After all, the more Mana one has, the more spells one can cast. Above that, there isn’t a device to determine one’s Mana. Only the magician can estimate the number. I’ll be safe as they won’t check the number of spells cast. Of course, casting powerful spells requires a large amount of Mana, but as far anyone knows, there are only one or two Level-1 spells that require huge Mana and none of them are of Ice element. I want the attention of recruiters, not everyone’s attention. Now that I escaped the horror narrowly, I should check what the shop has for me to buy. ‘SHOP’ What the Damn Hell? Why are these so costly? The moment I opened the shop section, I felt like I was cheated. The items looked good, but the prices were unbelievable. The Cheapest items are the Bronze class weapons, and they cost no less than 100 points each. I only got 40 points in total after completing two hidden missions. If this goes on like that, I need to complete at least 5 missions in order to afford a Bronze class weapon. I’m sad not because I couldn’t afford those Bronze class weapons but thinking about the rates of Silver class or Gold class weapons. Their prices would for sure reach the sky. Moreover, from their descriptions, the quality seems to be very high than those of weapons I have seen before. They also offer buffs to the wielder, which only armors did. Weapons are for ignoring the enemy’s defense and killing, not increasing the wielder’s power. I need to get my han
