Chapter 04.

The door slid open as he got closer to it, with hesitant steps, he walked in slowly expecting to hear a mocking laughter but nothing happened.

His body was aching all over due to pain and with each step he took in pain, he cussed inwardly and wished to humiliate and deliver some blows to Frank for the ill-treatment he'd meant out on him.

"Oh my goodness!" A female voice exclaimed, with a frown, Damon looked towards the side the voice came from and he wasn't surprised to see his mother in-law heading towards him hurriedly with a worried look on her face; now the worried look is definitely surprising.

"What the hell happened to you? You look like shits and smell like shits." She mocked and shrieked away immediately she came close enough to perceive the odd smell oozing from him.

Damon rolled his eyes, looking at his mother in-law who seemed disgusted by the appearance of her son in-law. She has no idea what her daughter sees in him.

"Good evening ma'am." Damon greeted the lost looking woman who gave him a sweet smile.

Of course, Damon finds nothing sweet about the smile. Every sweet smile of hers always means something dubious is cooking and the outcome is usually deadly for him.

"Evening, please go and freshen up. You have no idea how you reek." She ordered with a puke like face.

She's just exaggerating things and Damon knew this, that's what she's good at; creating a bomb out of scraps.

That's Serafina Carney for you, talented in creating chaos.

Damon looked around hoping for the brother-in-law to show up and tease him but when nothing happened, he looked at his mother in-law one last time, shrugged his shoulders and headed up stairs to freshen up.

Whatever they're up to tonight, he's more than eager to find out but he had this odd feeling that all is not well.

Something would happen tonight and from the tight gut feeling he's having right now, he's not gonna love it.

"Welcome, I heard your course mate made a fool of you today. I'm genuinely sorry about that." Serafina welcomed Damon into the sitting room with a genuine smile Damon summed up to be forced.

"Thanks." He muttered, unsure of what to say because everything happening right now is odd.

"Come, let's have dinner." She muttered, leading the way into the dinning area.

Damon puts on a blank face but his inside is in turmoil about the whole issue. This has never happened before, his mother-in-law inviting him for dinner...probably he's on another planet but if he's not; his mother-in-law must be mentally unstable.

Once seated, the aroma of the food stirred the hungry monster in him, making his empty tummy grumble.

"Let me serve you." She muttered but Damon stopped her before she could start dishing.

"I'll serve myself. Thank you."

They ate in silence for the first few minutes and Damon heard footsteps, turning around he saw his pompous brother-in-law heading towards them.

A huge sigh escaped his mouth and he immediately lost his appetite. Here comes trouble, seeing his brother-in-law face to face could only mean one thing and that's trouble and that's the last thing he needs right now.

Ayden would always look for a way to make him feel miserable.

"Hey Demonic live-in son in-law." He said aloud taking a seat besides his mother who frowned.

Damon chose to ignore him and there's an element of surprise in his face when he didn't argue about him eating in the same place as him.

Something is definitely off and he can't wait for this cliffhanger to end.

"Thanks for the meal ma'am. I'll go to bed now." He said standing up but the woman asked him to stay.

"Why?" He asked with a puzzled look.

"Your wife wants to see you, just wait for a few more minutes and she'll be here soon." She explained, glancing at her wrist watch.

Damon nodded wondering what Celena wanted to talk about, she hardly acknowledged his existence again in the house or her life, he'd ask for explanation every time but she choose to chew on his head with her bitter words; other people's mean words might not hurt him but Celena's words always cut deep and sharp into him so he'd decided to let her be hoping to surprise her one day with the news of a job but that day is far fetched...if not impossible.

"Uhmmmm, alright then. I'll wait." He muttered taking his seat.

"Your course mate did you bad today, he's so mean but what can I say, he's an already made man and compared to you...you're forever pathetic Damon, being brilliant doesn't give you an assured future and that's exactly what's happening with you. You're far from making it." Arden's voice broke the silence and anger began to build in Damon's body.

He doesn't wish for any trouble but if that fool doesn't let him be, he'll break his head again and this time, it's going to be worse than the last time.

He still chose to ignore him by focusing on his phone, surfing the internet for any available job.

When Ayden saw that his words weren't having the desired effects on the silent man sitting far from him, he cussed under his breath and kept shut, concentrating on his food.

"Here she comes." His mother in-law announced when she saw her daughter approaching.

Damon looked up and a half smile appeared on his face seeing his wife happily walking towards them.

"Good evening mom."

"Evening darling, how did it go?" She asked her daughter who gave a short nod of affirmation and the older woman's smile broadened.

"Good evening Damon." She looked towards her husband's direction for the first time she entered the dining area.

"Evening wifey, hope you're good?"

"All good. Sorry to have kept you waiting." She muttered, reaching into her handbag, she brought out an envelope.

"Happy birthday honey, this is for you." She wished, going towards him to hand him the envelope.

Celena still remembers his birthday when he'd forgotten about it; he's bound to forget such things, he has a bigger problem worrying him but his curiosity heightened wondering what could be in the envelope.

He took it, opened it and as his eyes scanned through the papers in his hand, his eyes darkened, the smiling lips turned into a frown and he snapped his head towards his wife.

"What's the meaning of this shit, darling wifey?" His voice was deep cold, laced with anger and surprise.
