Chapter 12: The Midnight Scream

Dinner was over. Now, all the participants were led back by the guards to the cell used as a room. Once the participants had entered, the guards would lock the cell from the outside.

"Uh, why is it locked?" Asked Ben in panic when he saw the guard who locked their cell pull out the key.

"This is a rule made by Mr. X so that you don't wander off anywhere," said the guard in a flat voice. Since his face was covered by a crow-shaped mask, Ben couldn't see what his expression was.

"But what if I want to go to the bathroom?" Ben asked again. He bit his nails.

The guard let out a long breath. He massaged his throbbing head. After that, he reached into his pants pocket for his cell phone. He put the phone in his ear to call someone.

"Sir, one of the participants asked me, What if they want to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night?"

Ben couldn't hear the conversation. He held the iron bars of the cell that separated him and the guard firmly.

The guard glanced at Ben, then gave a small nod. After that, he turned off his cell phone and put it back in his pants pocket.

"How?"

"Mr. x said that you can go to the bathroom. On the condition that we accompany you."

"Then how do I call you if I want to go to the bathroom?"

"Akh! You talk too much!"

The guard said in a loud voice, which made Ben immediately remove his hand from the iron trellis he was holding. The heterochromia-eyed man backed away with a scared look on his face.

"Do you realize how annoying you are?"

"He's not wrong," Terry, who had been silent and watching the conversation between the two, spoke up. "He's just asking questions about things that should be asked."

"But your friend is blabbering too much and making my ears hurt," the guard said in a stern voice. "You know, you and your group are the ones who give me the most extra work."

"That's your job," Daniel, who was sitting on his bed, spoke up. He folded his arms across his chest. "Anyway, Ben just asked. What if he wants to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night? Does he have to relieve himself here because you locked the door?"

The guard was silent. Daniel's words were true. If one of the members of the group he was supervising wanted to go to the bathroom and he didn't open the door, it would cause another, more complex problem. X would definitely get angry and fire him. Oh, this couldn't happen.

"What about it?" Daniel asked again when the guard didn't speak. "What I said is true, right?"

"Whatever! Go to bed and don't make a scene!" The guard turned around, about to leave Terry's group.

"Then how do we call you when you want to go to the bathroom?" Asked Terry, who managed to stop the guard. "You haven't answered yet."

The guard turned his head. He clenched his hands so tightly that his knuckles turned white. "You just yelled! I'm sleeping close to your 'room'!"

"Oh, okay. Thanks for the info." Daniel got up from his seat, then walked over to Ben and stroked his shoulder. He wanted to calm Ben, who was probably still shocked by the man's yelling. "Now you can go."

The guard stomped his feet vigorously, then walked away from the cell where Terry was sleeping. Once his back was out of sight, Terry let out a harsh sigh.

"He's an angry man," Terry commented.

"I agree," Kai gave a small nod from his bed. "Though we're just asking questions."

"Huh, that's it. We'd better get some sleep." Terry said, commanding his three roommates.

"Why so early?" Kai asked in surprise.

"I'm afraid that we have to wake up very early tomorrow," Terry answered in a low voice. "If we don't get enough sleep, then our performance could suffer. And if that happens, we could be eliminated."

The three of them shuddered in horror at what Terry said. Ben even hugged Daniel unconsciously. "Ukh, is that so?"

"It's possible," Terry replied, shrugging his shoulders indifferently. "But seriously, hurry up and get some sleep."

The three of them nodded and started to lie down on their respective beds. As for Terry, he was still pensive near the cell.

Ben, who was wrapped up in himself, said. "Don't you want to sleep yourself?"

Terry turned his head, then gave a faint smile. "I'll sleep after this."

"Okay."

Ben, Kai, and Daniel began to close their eyes, going to dreamland. As for Terry, he was still on the spot, fighting with his own thoughts.

"I'm still afraid of the so-called paradise of disaster. I'd better not sleep just in case," he muttered softly. Terry walked to his bed, then sat down, leaning against the wall. He closed his eyes but did not intend to sleep. He just wanted to trick the guards.

Around midnight, Terry woke up from his sleep. He cursed himself because he shouldn't have fallen asleep while on guard duty.

As he was about to get the drinking water in the bottle, he suddenly heard a strange noise from behind the wall. Out of curiosity, Terry put his ear to it.

"What's that sound?" He muttered softly.

The sound he heard was so weak that it couldn't be heard clearly. But Terry could tell that the sound he heard was an argument. And it was more than two people, judging by the different tones of voice.

"Ukh, I can't hear what those people are saying behind the wall," he complained. Terry was about to get up from his position. However, Terry quickly stopped his activity when he heard a loud shouting voice. It was so loud that it woke up his three roommates.

"Huh? What's that noise?" Asked Ben, who immediately sat up from his sleep.

"I don't know," Terry said in a low voice. "But we have to find out.

"Oh my, who shouts in the middle of the night like this?" Daniel grumbled softly as his rest was interrupted. "Has that person lost his mind?"

"Shouldn't we-"

Kai's voice was cut off when he heard another shout. It sounded louder than before. In fact, the four of them could hear a roar as if the person screaming was in pain.

"Oh, what exactly happened?" Ben wrapped his arms around himself, as if hiding himself. "Why is that person's scream sounding louder and louder?"

"I think we should check it out," Terry said.

"Are you kidding me?" Asked Kai with rounded eyes, as if they were about to pop out of place.

"No, I'm serious."

"But how do we get out of this cell?" Asked Kai with a rough sigh. "You remember that the four of us and even the other groups can't get out of here?"

Terry bit his lip. What Kai said was true. Currently, they were locked inside.

"But if we don't check the origin of the scream, we can't sleep either, right?"

"That's true. It's just, how do we get out of here?" Daniel, who was yawning, chimed in.

"I can call the guards to-"

"Why aren't you sleeping?!"

The voice of the guard in front of the cell startled the four of them. Moreover, the guard's entire body was covered in blood. In the man's right hand, there was a long knife like katana covered in blood.

"Where did that blood come from?"
