Chapter. 8 I'm Just a Loser

Sean sat pensively alone in a corner of the underground dome. He was watching the night sky through a glass window that could be opened. Suddenly, Claudia came over and handed him a canned drink.

“Thank you,” Sean replied as he accepted the drink.

“You're welcome. Looks like that girl means a lot to you. Is she your girlfriend?” asked Claudia. Sean smiled briefly. Then shook his head slowly.

“No,” Sean answered briefly. However, it managed to make Claudia's forehead wrinkle perfectly. The girl also shook her head slowly, as if she couldn't believe what Sean had just said. “I mean, we were together once. When we were young and innocent. But after he learned the meaning of wealth. He just dumped me for another man who already had everything. ”Claudia smiled and Sean saw it then. “You would have thought the same thing if you were in that position, right?”

“Oh, no. That's not what I think.”

“Then?”

“I think that girl must be feeling a lot of regret right now. Because the man she chose turned out to be unreliable in her time of need,” Claudia replied with an amused smile. Sean did the same.

“You're right. I was surprised by Johan’s unpredictable actions. I thought he was a real man who could protect Sarah no matter what.”

“Hahaha.” Claudia laughed. “You're a man and you still think there are men like that?” Claudia shook her head with an incredulous smile. Sean also looked at Claudia with a confused face. Then Claudia raised her face. Looking up at the quiet night sky dotted with stars. “I joined the medical team not because of my expertise in that field. But, because I have a dark story about rescue,” Claudia said. Sean immediately turned his head. His face instantly looked interested in what Claudia was saying.

“When I was little. My mom and dad separated. My father found a new life and chose to leave me and my mother. Mom worked hard to support the two of us. She never cared about her health. When mom got sick and ended up dying. My world was completely shattered. I was invited to move to my father's new house. But he differed completely from the father I knew. He never listened to me. I was always the one who was wrong, even though I didn't know anything. All because he was so afraid of his new wife and his two stepchildren. He didn't hesitate to hit or kick me. Things he never did when he was with mom.” Claudia stopped her story for a moment to take a deep breath. It seemed that the story was still long and quite suffocating to her chest. “There was an economic crisis ten years ago. Suddenly, they planned a family vacation. They brought me along. It turned out that the five of us were camping at the edge of a forest. We set up a tent and started looking for firewood to build a campfire. I was busy looking for dry twigs. I got separated from them. I got lost and could barely find my way out. But luckily, before nightfall, I reached the place where we had set up the tent. Unfortunately, I didn't find them there. They had left. Our coming to the forest was to throw me out.”

“Then how did you get out of the forest?”

“An old woman looking for firewood found me while I was crying. She ended up taking me home and letting me stay in her house. She lived alone in her big house. From then on, it was the firewood seeker's grandmother who took care of me until I grew up.”

“That made you forget about safety and keep fighting to save that little girl yesterday?” asked Sean. While looking at Claudia, who was still looking at the twinkling stars in the night sky.

“Yes. I remembered my fate. If I hadn't met the grandmother who was looking for firewood. Perhaps my fate would not have been better than hers. And that's also what drove me to become a nurse and join the disaster medical team,” Claudia explained. “What do you think? My life is miserable, isn't it?” asked Claudia with an amused smile and a few shakes of her head.

“No, it's not. My life is much more miserable,” said Sean, which made Claudia frown.

“Really?”

“Yes. Before all this happened and I hadn't gotten this overpower system yet. I was just a loser guy who didn't get any luck at all. I was just an orphan, with no skills and no possessions. Everyone made fun of me all the time. One of them was Sarah. The woman I once loved to death.”

“Then why did you save her yesterday? You must still have feelings for her?”

“Oh, no. Of course I don't. I didn't even care about Sarah's fate back then. It's just that Sarah said that she would tell me who my actual parents are still alive. She's the daughter of the orphanage owner who raised me, so she must have all the information about them.”

“So, you're doing this to find out where your parents are.”

“Yes. I just want to find out what made them leave me at the orphanage as a baby. Was it the baby they weren't expecting?”

“Don't think badly before you know what really happened,” Claudia said. “We can definitely save Sarah and reveal all the information you need about your true background,” she added as she took Sean's right hand. Sean returned Claudia's gaze. Then he smiled sweetly after that. Suddenly, there were people shouting loudly.

“Help! Help! Please check on her!” shouted one soldier while carrying the body of the little girl, who was already covered in blood. Because it was torn apart by the Megant Monster's hands. Of course, Claudia and Sean's attention immediately moved to the source of the sound. They immediately ran there.

“What happened?” asked Sean.

“The monsters have arrived at my house. They destroyed everything and killed my wife. This child is all I can save. Please treat him immediately.”

“Alright. All right. Let me handle your daughter!” Claudia took over the five-year-old girl from her father's hands. After that, she hurried her into an unfamiliar room.

“Why did you go alone? Why didn't you bring me along?” Sean said.

“Sorry. I couldn't think straight. When my son called for help. I went home as fast as I could. Really, it's my fault. It's my negligence,” the man said as he cried and beat himself on the head.

“Stop it! You don't solve problems like that. Never mind. We can't blame anyone now. We'd better try not to make any more mistakes next time. Because the safety of all of us is still at risk before the monsters are exterminated,” Sean said.

“Yes. You're right.”
