Part 1
Arwen looked anxious in the mouth of the cave. She paced back and forth with a bottle of antidote in her hand.“It’s almost dusk now. Where are they?” mumbled Arwen. “I thought they would head straight here to rest after that incident with the venomous plant. Or perhaps they got themselves caught by another one?”That thought almost made Arwen bolt again to the depth of the forest to find out her human friends. But she was being held back by her hesitation.“What if they arrive here while I’m out there?” pondered Arwen. “I will just wait here for a little more while.”Arwen made the right decision. Just after she finished saying that, Devon and Francesca could be seen from the distance walking towards her. It wasn’t clearly visible, but they looked like they’re struggling to carry something.“Bro Devon! Sis Francesca!” waved Arwen enthusiastically while running to their direction. “I’ve been waiting here for, like, forever!”“You must forgive us, Arwen. No, actually it was my fault,” told Francesca. “It was my idea to drag Devon with me for a little bit of hunting. You heard me this morning, right? I’m dying for some animal proteins!”“Looks like meat is back on the menu, boys!” shouted Devon valiantly while puffing his chest out. He put down the sack to the ground with a loud thud, indicating the heavy content inside.“Do we look like males to you?” cut Francesca sharply. “It’s not boys, but girls!”“Uh sorry, I just felt compelled to say so,” reasoned Devon while emptying his sack.“Whoa, you caught quite a lot!” complimented Arwen. “One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine! Nine rabbits!”[MISSION FAILED!][HUNT 10 RABBITS: FAILED!][PUNISHMENT: LOST CONSCIOUSNESS]“Ahem, do you notice one of them is pregnant?” interrupted Devon before his headache got the best of him. “So it’s ten rabbits!”[MISSION COMPLETED!][HUNT 10 RABBITS: SUCCESS!][REWARD: 100 DC]“Way to go, Sis Francesca! As expected of a huntress!” praised Arwen while looking at Francesca in awe.[MISSION COMPLETED!][HUNT 10 RABBITS: SUCCESS!][REWARD: 100 DC][CANCELLED][MISSION SHOULD BE ACCOMPLISHED BY YOUR OWN]“Nah, all the credit should go to Devon. I was just looking over him, that’s all,” responded Francesca humbly. Arwen couldn’t believe what she heard. It was just this morning that she found this clumsy teenager got entangled by a natural trap, leaving Arwen no choice but to underestimate Devon.[MISSION COMPLETED!][HUNT 10 RABBITS: SUCCESS!][REWARD: 100 DC][PS: SORRY FOR DOUBTING YOU]“Whoa, Bro Dev! Such amazing and rapid character development you got there!” applauded Arwen, despite she still found it hard to digest that fact. “Turns out you’re a quick learner, after all!”“Well, that’s not a big deal, to be honest,” evaded Devon. “All I did was just trapping the rabbits, that’s all.”“Give yourself more pats in the back, you gloom-doom!” retorted Francesca. “It’s a very smooth movement for a green newbie like you. While trapping is different from hunting, but still it will lead that way.”Devon couldn’t help smiling to hear that kind remark. After all of the painful and tragic events they passed through, a gentle gesture like this was something to be appreciated.“Bro Dev, why are you grinning like that?” asked Arwen, shattering his daydreaming. “We elves also smile from time to time, but with a good reason. Do humans smile without any reason? I personally find that weird.”“Trust me, as a fellow human, I also think that’s weird. Freakish, even,” smirked Francesca while jeering at Devon. “Dev, why don’t you stop being weird and do us a favour? Gut and skin those hares for cooking, will you?”“Huh? But it’s like 10 of them!” protested Devon. “Come on, give me a hand!”“I would, but I need to prepare for the utensils necessary for cooking,” evaded Francesca. “We only ate fruits up until now, so we don’t have any tool for cooking. For now, I need to rely on surrounding items to make do with what we have around.”Devon grumbled while putting back the hare carcasses back to the sack, before he left to the nearest river.“Oh, let me drop this before I forgot it completely!” shouted Arwen while taking something out from the bushes near the cave entrance. “When I went back to my village for the antidote, I remember you wanted some meat so I took the liberty of taking these utensils for you. I forgot to hand over the antidote to Bro Devon, though.”“That’s very considerate of you, Arwen!” appreciated Francesca. “And don’t worry about Devon, he doesn’t need that antidote any more, judging from the looks of it.”“Now, I think I will focus on getting the fire ready,” volunteered Arwen. “It would cost me no time to gather some firewoods enough for the night.”As this is their first proper dinner they had in a while, it’s understandable that it took them a long time to finish. Devon spent the most time cleaning up the meat, forcing Francesca and Arwen to come to the rescue. After they finished, it was way too late, so they decided just to have a simple grill to save time.“Pfuah, that hit the spot!” yelled Francesca after gulping down a piece of grilled meat from the heated stone. “Don’t you think so too, Dev?”“Agree, but I feel like there’s something’s missing,” wondered Devon.“Ah, I know! It must be rice, right?” guessed Arwen. “We elves don’t eat meat that much, so I’m unfamiliar with it. But I heard that you humans eat rice with everything!”“Dumbass! You must have misunderstood. It’s not rice that we eat everything with, but bread instead!” laughed Francesca. “Now that you mention it, I do miss my bread.”“No, it’s not bread. We are still missing something,” insisted Devon while chewing the tough texture of the half-grilled hare. “I can feel it. What we are missing is, WATER!”“Oh, I thought it’s humans’ custom to eat without drinking water,” giggled Arwen. “I’ve been feeling thirsty for a while but I hesitated to voice out my concern. I’m afraid it would be rude to question your culture.”“Arwen, you silly little elf,” chuckled Francesca who found Arwen’s innocence amusing. “Devon, go fetch some water from the river for us to boil!”“Huh, why me?” asked Devon confused.“Will you let ladies like us carry that heavy bucket of water? In this dark night?” pleaded Francesca with her puppy eyes. “And you were prepping the hares there, so you must be familiar with the surrounding, I think.”Devon wanted to lengthen the discussion but he decided to cut it short. His mouth began to dry up and if he needed to take the water by himself, then he would. Devon rose up to head back to the river, moaning and whining along the way. Francesca and Arwen looked at each other and bursted out laughing.“Now that was what I called a feast!”Francesca patted her bulging belly full with hare meats. She looked so satisfied to finally taste the exotic flavour of animal proteins.“Don’t you think so, Dev?” asked Francesca to her companion.“Yeah, though normally I never had the luxury to eat this much,” replied Devon. “Meat was something rare in my family’s dining table. Only during holidays and celebrations. Most of the time we just ate crops produced by our farm.”“Hehe, welcome to the hunter’s life, boy!” boasted Francesca. “You wish you’d met me sooner, don’t you?”“Uh, I prefer we never met each other at all,” stated Devon coldly. There was a hint of gloominess in his answer. “No hard feelings, but you know what I mean.”“Way to ruin the mood, Dev,” retorted Francesca while chugging down her mug of water. “It’s getting late now. I’m going to the river to wash down this negative emotion you caused.”“Hey, it was you who brought the topic up!” protested Devon. “And I’m sure you felt th
That night felt so long for Devon. Being confronted by Arwen, he was at a loss for words and all he could do was just to hung his head down until Arwen finally thought that she had enough for that night and decided to leave the place. Francesca already departed before her, leaving Devon alone on that spot. He slowly walked back to the cave while wondering how could he be trapped in this situation. After arriving inside the cave, he saw Francesca already slept. Devon laid down and tried to close his eyes but found himself unable to sleep. No matter how many times he changed his position, Devon still felt uncomfortable. The next morning, Devon woke up with massive bags hanging under his eyes due to lack of sleep. Looking around the cave, he realized that he was the only one there. It seemed Francesca had woken up earlier than he did and decided to depart without even waiting for him. That just made Devon more anxious.“Yawn… What a way to start a day…” sighed Devon while scratching his
“There you are, I’ve been looking for you,” spoke Devon while munching raspberries. His left hand was full of other fruits too. “Here, stop crying and have some of these.”Devon offered his harvest to Francesca, to which the latter responded by shaking his head wilder than she did before. As her mood was swinging thanks to the sentimental episode provoked by Arwen’s harsh interrogation session, Francesca wasn’t as fierce as last night. She just pouted and turned her face away from Devon, making her look cuter instead.“What? Aren’t you hungry? You’ve had your breakfast already?” asked Devon while putting a mulberry inside his mouth. “We can’t keep eating meat forever, Fran. You need to understand.”“Ah, I get it! You’re still upset from our accident last night, I reckon,” concluded Devon. “How many times I need to tell you? It wasn’t on purpose. I was just running from that crazy elf’s seduction, and by the time I knew it, I was already on the river and coincidentally you also happene
Arwen and Francesca couldn’t believe what Devon just blurted out of his mouth. They looked at each other to confirm their confusion.“Devon, are you out of your mind? It’s way too early for you to take this beast down!” opposed Francesca. “I have to admit that you’re a fast learner when you successfully hunted the hares before, but this is a bear we’re facing!”“Yeah, Bro Devon! Not to mention, this is not your regular bear, but a Sea Bear!” warned Arwen who seemed nervous to see that giant grizzly with greenish fur. “It’s like an urban legend here in this forest!”Devon frowned to hear Arwen’s explanation. Something didn’t sit well with him.“A Sea Bear? But we’re in the forest!” argued Devon, trying to find the logic in his elf friend’s statement.GROWL!Their banter was rudely interrupted by the bear who charged at Devon. Perhaps that furry beast was offended for being ignored by his potential preys. With another stroke of luck, Devon managed to evade by a hair’s breadth.“I also h
“What do we have here? Two lovely ladies full of spirit, it seems,” commented Belphegor while flailing his arms around, sending mini shockwave with each of his movements to all directions except Arwen and Francesca’s, destructing everything blocking its path. The once lush forests around now had been an open area, devoid of vegetations. He purposefully did that to demonstrate a little bit of his power, aiming to intimidate his toys. “You lassies are too tense it disgusts me!”Along with that statement, Belphegor delivered a gust of whirlwind which forced Francesca and Arwen to grit their teeth not to be blown away.“Foul being, identify yourself!” ordered Francesca amidst the strong gale. “Stop using Devon for your dirty trick!”“Me? Foul being?” giggled Belphegor. “How dare you address a prince of hell like that? It’s your mouth which is foul!”Arwen looked at Francesca anxiously. Sweat started to drip from her forehead.“Prince of hell? What is he talking about?” wondered Arwen. “Ju
“Buahahahaha, I can’t wait to wipe the floor with you and proceed to loafing around!” declared Belphegor, ready at any time to bring down the unholy punishment to this innocent land. “In fact, I start to feel the mood for it now, yawn…”Francesca opened one of her eyes to peek at the latest situation. Belphegor was still standing there but something seemed off with him. The energy ball he held slowly started to get smaller and dissipating. His expression also somehow began to show drowsiness, until finally he closed his eyes and proceeded to doze off on the spot as the vitality seeped out of his body, leaving him laying defencelessly on the ground."Sis Fran, what happened? Does it mean we’re safe?” asked Arwen worriedly.“I hope so. Looks like my little gamble paid off. I laced my dagger with a potent melatonin toxin that looks like it’s working for now,” answered the huntress. “I can’t use any other toxin since I’m worried about affecting Devon’s wellbeing.”But their relief didn’t
Laughter echoed but weirdly Francesca and Arwen didn’t seem to be bothered by the noise. At that time, Devon realized that the demons inside him had started to show themselves again. He walked outside the cave to keep his conversation private.“Welcome, you bastards. It’s been a while,” greeted Devon to the guests who paid a visit inside his mind. “I thought you guys were gone for good after causing such a scene back then.”“In your dream, boy! You forged a contract with us, you remember?” reminded Lucifer. “So, until you keep your part of the deal, expect to see more of our antics soon! Wahahaha!”Devon was astonished to remember that. Indeed, he struck a deal with them and agreed to offer them his soul, but that was done under a very stressful situation, making him unable to think clearly. But what’s done was done and there was no more he could do about that. Or maybe he could.“Whoa there, fiends. Hold there for just a moment,” said Devon. “It was cheap for you demons to come sneak
“Arwen, how far does this pathway stretch? We’ve been walking like forever, yet I didn’t see any change in the scenery,” complained Devon who looked bored. “Are you sure this is the right way?”“Relax, Bro Devon. If I’m not sure about the way, then who would?” answered Arwen hypothetically. “Actually there have been changes but it’s quite difficult for human eyes to follow through.”Devon and Francesca were astonished to hear what Arwen said. Especially Francesca, because as a huntress, she was expected to know her surroundings well thanks to her job. It would be embarassing if she failed to notice any abnormalities around them.“Wait, Arwen! What do you mean by that?” chased Francesca.“For the past few minutes, we already passed through the invisible border which separates human forest and elf forest,” narrated Arwen. All of a sudden, they had themselves surrounded by more than a dozen people who came out from the bushes. They didn’t seem like honest fellows, to be honest.“Right, t
