Francesca carried Devon on her shoulder, entering the dark forest. Although her body was a little bit smaller than Devon, Francesca still managed to carry Devon away to safety, leaving the decimated village behind them. She was hurt too, but that didn’t stop her pace.
“Huff, now I start to question my decision. Why didn’t I leave him behind? He only gave me nothing but trouble since the first time he came to my life!” regretted Francesca. She kept dragging Devon who lost consciousness while still being alert to the surroundings. Sure, she wouldn’t have to worry about her pursuers anymore, but the night in the forest would pose a trouble if taken lightly. As a huntress, she knew that fact too well.“Ugh, I can’t keep going on like this. Not with my wounded condition,” concluded Francesca. She was carrying Devon on her right shoulder which was not injured, but she started to feel numb due to the long duration her shoulder exposed to burden.Luckily, she located another cave within her sight. This forest sure had lots of place to hide for animals, which could be used for humans as well. Wasting no time, she headed inside to catch some breather. As soon as she stepped her foot inside, she knew something was amiss, but she couldn’t grasp what was it. After she put Devon down to the ground, she went deeper inside to check what the cave was hiding.“A torch would be great in this blinding darkness. I need to secure this cave, but heading inside without a source of light would be too dangerous,” mumbled Francesca to herself, cancelling her intention to probe the deeper part of the cave.Fortunately, or unfortunately, it wasn’t necessary for her to examine anymore. A heavy breathing and a vague movement indicated that she and Devon weren’t the only creatures residing in that cave.GRRR!! ROOOAAARR!!Giving her no time to react, that presence made itself known by showing itself to the outer part of the cave where Francesca and Devon were. It was a giant grizzly bear, standing on its feet, as if declaring to Francesca who the owner of the cave was.“Crap! Not in a time like this!” said Francesca while stepping back slowly, trying to create some distance between them. “It’s easier to run, but what should I do with the sleeping beauty?”Once again, Francesca was torn in between saving her own skin or attempting to stand her ground facing the brown beast. First option would be more comfortable, but she would feel guilty for the rest of her life. Not to mention it would also go against the final wish of her father. It was like spitting on her father’s grave, if he had one. That left her with the last option, but that was just mental. Fighting the territorial bear while at the same time protecting Devon was going to be a huge handicap for her.“Father, what are you going to do in a desperate time like this?” asked Francesca to her late father. In the middle of her doubt, an arrow crossed from behind her, exactly beside her cheek. A little bit more to the left, and that arrow would have successfully grazed her rosy cheek. That arrow found its mark exactly on the bear’s neck, putting the grizzly in a very painful situation.“Miss, stand back! You have some nerves, going inside the cave of a protective mother bear in the middle of the night, without any weapons or even a torch!” said a voice behind her. Francesca turned around to see a female elf who was responsible for the arrow before.“Come! Let’s escape while that bear was busy taking out the arrow!” invited the elf. Francesca nodded without thinking, because it was not the time for one. She quickly grabbed Devon and followed the elf’s lead, putting the bear’s cave behind them. After gaining some distance from the cave, that elf slowed down.“I know that humans are weird, but not as weird as you guys!” commented the elf. “No one in their right mind would intrude a bear’s cave!”“Well, excuse us! We don’t know it belongs to such a frightening beast,” replied Francesca. “Thanks anyway, I don’t know what to do if you didn’t show up back then.”“Never mind, I just happened to pass by, that’s all,” stated the elf. “You’re human, right? This is my first time seeing one. I’m Arwen, nice to meet you!”“I’m Francesca and he’s Devon,” responded Francesca.“That boy, is he sick? Come to my village! While you guys recovering, I can take my time to examine, err I mean, to look after you guys! Yeah, that’s it!” suggested Arwen, who couldn’t hold back her fascination to humans.Remembering what happened in the last village they were in, actually Francesca really wanted to refuse Arwen’s hospitality, but given her situation, she was in no position to bargain. She agreed to let Arwen show the way.The village was actually not far from their position. They arrived in no time, but they were stopped by the elves responsible for the security of the perimeter.“Halt! Arwen, you should stop lurking around at this time of the night!” scolded the elf sentry. It seemed he was already familiar with this scene. “On top of that, you even brought some shady looking characters with you!”“Oh come on, I promise this will be the last time!” begged Arwen. “It’s an emergency! This boy needs treatment as soon as possible, so please let us in!”“No can do, Arwen! You know our village is purely restricted to elves!” rejected the sentry. “I will let you off the hook now, so use this chance I give you to begone from my sight with your barbaric friends!”“But -”“Another second you pass here, and I am going to alert the others. I’m sure they won’t be as merciful as me. Your friends might even get arrested!” threatened the elf sentry.“Hmph! Such a snitch!” scoffed Arwen while pulling her human compatriots away from the village. “Don’t worry, I will find you somewhere else to rest.”“As long as it’s not a bear cave,” murmured Francesca.“How about a bat cave, then?”“Urggh...”Devon felt all the bones in his body hurt when he tried to move after his deep sleep. He just woke up, but instead of feeling refreshed, a hint of dizziness still lingered in his head.As he opened his eyes, all he could see was another pair of eyes which had been monitoring him for God knew how long. He was too confused to react, until finally the realization started to kick in.“WHOA!”Out of instinct grinded by his past experiences of having people coming after him, he leapt backward until his back touched the cave wall. Ignoring the sensation of pain which started to manifest, he put on a fighting stance.“Jumpy in the morning. Hmm.. that’s quite peculiar,” commented Arwen. Her fascinated expression showed how she tried to burn that trivial information inside her memories. “Humans’ behavior is unpredictable, I see.”“Don’t lump me in with him! I’ll have you know that not all humans are the same!” protested Francesca from the cave’s mouth.“Really? I thought all humans l
“Good morning, my human friends! I hope you had a good night!” greeted Arwen as she appeared at the cave entrance. With a yawn, Devon who just woke up waved a hand to acknowledge her arrival.“It could be better, but it’s better than nothing,” remarked Francesca who already woke up way before Devon did. “I gritted my teeth and shivering all night long thanks to the natural air-conditioning.”The night they spent in the cave was chilling to the bone. It became worse since they didn’t have anything to cover up their body to combat the freezing wind.“Ahahaha, well, I’m sorry to hear that. I wish our village could be more tolerant and open-minded,” apologized Arwen half-heartedly.“Don’t mind her, Arwen. I was being generous to offer the warmth of my body to her, but she abruptly turned it down,” said Devon. “It resulted in both of us suffering to the point of nearing hypothermia.”“You think I didn’t know about your ulterior motive, you pervert? You just want to take advantage of the si
“Bro, but I couldn’t get it. Why do you insist that death is your only way out of your problem?” asked Arwen when Devon finished his meal. “To be honest, you sounded like an edgy elf teenager to me.”After gulping down a glass of water, Devon glared at the curious elf, expressing his discontent.“What do you mean? Don’t act like you know about my pain!” rebuked Devon. He couldn’t accept to be lectured by a juvenile elf. Well, at least she looked like one to Devon’s eyes.“No, no, exactly because I could sympathize with you, I could speak like this,” stated Arwen, trying to clear the misunderstanding. “You know, if I were you, I would not stop at burning their mansion. I would hunt their lives, even if I have to shake hands with the devils in order to do so.”“Easy for you to say. I have literal demons inside me, but each and every one of them is so troublesome that it’s next to impossible to expect their cooperation!” objected Devon stubbornly.“Have you tried talking with them? I mea
It was another day in the forest unfamiliar for Devon and Francesca. Both of them woke up at almost the same time, but with their own expressions. While Francesca acted like nothing was wrong and being her usual self, Devon still couldn’t bring himself to look at Francesca in the eyes, thanks to what he did to her previously. The guilt kept consuming his mind as he remembered how he managed to bring danger to the huntress all the time. Even when he was asleep, he still posed the threat to everyone around him.“Morning, Dev!” greeted Francesca. “How was your sleep last night? A bit more peaceful, eh?”All Devon could respond was simply a nod with his head hung down, subconsciously avoiding eye contact with Francesca. He even turned his back on her afterwards, leaving the maiden bewildered and wondering what was wrong with him.“Dev, are you okay? You don’t look like you’re awake yet,” worried Francesca while trying to approach Devon. “Are you hungry or something? Want to head out for s
Part 1Arwen looked anxious in the mouth of the cave. She paced back and forth with a bottle of antidote in her hand.“It’s almost dusk now. Where are they?” mumbled Arwen. “I thought they would head straight here to rest after that incident with the venomous plant. Or perhaps they got themselves caught by another one?”That thought almost made Arwen bolt again to the depth of the forest to find out her human friends. But she was being held back by her hesitation.“What if they arrive here while I’m out there?” pondered Arwen. “I will just wait here for a little more while.”Arwen made the right decision. Just after she finished saying that, Devon and Francesca could be seen from the distance walking towards her. It wasn’t clearly visible, but they looked like they’re struggling to carry something.“Bro Devon! Sis Francesca!” waved Arwen enthusiastically while running to their direction. “I’ve been waiting here for, like, forever!”“You must forgive us, Arwen. No, actually it was my f
“Now that was what I called a feast!”Francesca patted her bulging belly full with hare meats. She looked so satisfied to finally taste the exotic flavour of animal proteins.“Don’t you think so, Dev?” asked Francesca to her companion.“Yeah, though normally I never had the luxury to eat this much,” replied Devon. “Meat was something rare in my family’s dining table. Only during holidays and celebrations. Most of the time we just ate crops produced by our farm.”“Hehe, welcome to the hunter’s life, boy!” boasted Francesca. “You wish you’d met me sooner, don’t you?”“Uh, I prefer we never met each other at all,” stated Devon coldly. There was a hint of gloominess in his answer. “No hard feelings, but you know what I mean.”“Way to ruin the mood, Dev,” retorted Francesca while chugging down her mug of water. “It’s getting late now. I’m going to the river to wash down this negative emotion you caused.”“Hey, it was you who brought the topic up!” protested Devon. “And I’m sure you felt th
That night felt so long for Devon. Being confronted by Arwen, he was at a loss for words and all he could do was just to hung his head down until Arwen finally thought that she had enough for that night and decided to leave the place. Francesca already departed before her, leaving Devon alone on that spot. He slowly walked back to the cave while wondering how could he be trapped in this situation. After arriving inside the cave, he saw Francesca already slept. Devon laid down and tried to close his eyes but found himself unable to sleep. No matter how many times he changed his position, Devon still felt uncomfortable. The next morning, Devon woke up with massive bags hanging under his eyes due to lack of sleep. Looking around the cave, he realized that he was the only one there. It seemed Francesca had woken up earlier than he did and decided to depart without even waiting for him. That just made Devon more anxious.“Yawn… What a way to start a day…” sighed Devon while scratching his
“There you are, I’ve been looking for you,” spoke Devon while munching raspberries. His left hand was full of other fruits too. “Here, stop crying and have some of these.”Devon offered his harvest to Francesca, to which the latter responded by shaking his head wilder than she did before. As her mood was swinging thanks to the sentimental episode provoked by Arwen’s harsh interrogation session, Francesca wasn’t as fierce as last night. She just pouted and turned her face away from Devon, making her look cuter instead.“What? Aren’t you hungry? You’ve had your breakfast already?” asked Devon while putting a mulberry inside his mouth. “We can’t keep eating meat forever, Fran. You need to understand.”“Ah, I get it! You’re still upset from our accident last night, I reckon,” concluded Devon. “How many times I need to tell you? It wasn’t on purpose. I was just running from that crazy elf’s seduction, and by the time I knew it, I was already on the river and coincidentally you also happene
