The chaos from the earlier attack had barely subsided, and the streets were still filled with a frantic energy. Marcus stood outside the command center, his mind racing as he processed the events of the past few hours. The city had narrowly avoided disaster, but he knew they weren’t out of danger yet.

As he reviewed the intel on his tablet, he felt a presence beside him. He turned to see Evelyn, her expression serious yet soft, a mixture of anxiety and resolve in her eyes.

“Marcus,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “Can we talk?”

He glanced at her, momentarily distracted by the weight of her gaze. “Is this about the mission? Because I really need to focus right now.”

“It’s not about the mission, not directly,” Evelyn replied, stepping closer. The way she stood, hands clasped together, made it clear this was important. “It’s about us.”
