As soon as dawn broke, Howard had risen and begun to prepare for his day at work. He said his goodbye to his wife, who had also awoken while he got ready. Then he placed a kiss on Lisa's forehead as she snores away, oblivious to everything happening around her.

“Have a nice resumption," Irene said as she pulled him in for a hug one more time.

.

It was still very early in the morning when Howard parked his car on Kevin's driveway. As he stepped out of the car, pocketing his car's keys, he noticed the car that was in front of Kevin's house. He hadn't seen a car there yesterday.

When he reached the door, he lightly tapped his knuckles against it. He stepped back and waited for a response. He didn't get any, so he tried again.

After the second knock, he heard a feminine voice call from inside, “I'm coming,” then it was followed by soft footsteps.

Then the door was pulled open. “Good morning,” he greeted, a polite smile stretching on his lips as he briefly wondered who the lady was.

Not long after, Kevin walked out of the room, donned in a simple checkered shirt and suit pants. He did the last button of his shirt as he stood behind the seat that Jake and Howard had both moved to as they played a game on the game console. “Okay, guys. I'm done,” he said, interrupting their conversation.Howard and Jake immediately hopped on their feet, ready to leave whenever Kevin was.“We're ready, boss," Howard spoke on behalf of both of them.“Okay then,” he headed toward the dining area that Cindy was currently filling up with the breakfast she made. “Let's have breakfast, then we'll get going.”"Okay, boss,” they chorused and followed him to the table. As the three men savoured their breakfast, a comforting blend of tofu, melted cheese, and the smoky hint of bacon, Cindy brought a table of water for each of them, as Kevin always instructed her to serve every meal with a bottle of water, whether it was needed or not.“Thank you, Cindy,” Kevin said a few minutes later as all o

The agent came as fast as Lionel had assured Kevin. He was a man of average height with a serious expression, one that slowly eased up into small smiles whenever conversations began. As directed by the man, Jake drove from one place to another, from one location to another. They would drop by at each of the buildings that were available, and Kevin would look at the place and see if it was suitable for what he had in mind, if it matched his requirements.“And this place, it is the most sought-after area here in the Landary province,” the man who was showing them around began when they walked into another building yet again.Kevin took one look at the deserted area and knew he wasn't going to like the place. It didn't look deserted like how estates were always quiet; it looked abandoned, almost like the inhabitants of the area were tired of doing life. But he said nothing as he listened to the man and inspected the building while briefly wondering if he really meant it when he said it w

Lionel nodded. “That's right. You will really need a place. And I think it should be bought with Lord Phoenix's name.” Then he added immediately, “Except that it won't make sense if you have access to the building all by yourself.”"I was about to point that out to you,” Kevin said. “If it happens like that, before you know what's happening, words will spread about an ordinary man having access to such a house, and the people behind the paperwork will also start to talk since we'd have bought the apartment under Lord Phoenix…” Kevin trailed off.“And they would begin to suspect you to be the Lord Phoenix,” Lionel completed.“And then, boom! Just like that, our cover would blow off.”Lionel laughed at his boss’s theatrics. “And then they'd begin to make moves and plans on how to get you again."“Yeah," Kevin murmured back.As the room grew silent again, Lionel, reaching for a cranberry in the bowl of fruits set beside the wine bottle and munching on the juicy fruit, pondered Lionel's s

The next day, Howard, Jake, Lionel, and Kevin were up early. They prepared to catch their flights. Lionel was the first to leave, as he had a business meeting early that morning.“I'll leave now, boss," he said as he stood before Kevin, his small bag in his hand.Kevin looked up from his breakfast. "Have you had breakfast?”"I don't have that time, boss. I have to be there on time, so I just ordered a takeout.”Kevin nodded as he dabbed his lips with a napkin. "Alright then. Have a safe trip."“Thank you, boss." He lowered his head in a bow and turned around, walking out the door.A few minutes later, Howard walked into the living room, fresh out of the shower. “Good morning, boss." "Good morning, Howard, our flight is in an hour. Help yourself to something,” he said as he gestured toward the breakfast tray that had been rolled in earlier that morning. It was filled with a variety of food.Howard nodded and made his pick.Just then, Jake walked into the room, dragging his feet as he

The man regarded Kevin for a long while. He knew the perfect thing to do. He looked well-kept, but he could swear with his whole bank balance that he wouldn't be able to afford his coat. He shook his head and snickered, seeing as the only way out of this for both of them was for them to kiss his shoe.He turned to the attendant, who had a fearful expression on her face as she looked up at the idiot that was her girlfriend and said something to him.It was enough that a customer was mad at her. Mrs. Perry scowled at him. “What are you doing here? What do you want? Are you back to disrespecting me some more?" She rushed out bitterly, not giving Kevin a chance to respond.“Of course not, grandmother," Kevin answered calmly. "I'll never do that. I'm here on behalf of Mia.”Mrs. Perry simply arched her brows."I apologise if I made you feel like I disrespected you. It wasn't my intention.”Mrs. Perry snorted. “Look at this boy. At that moment, the main door was pushed open, and they all saw Mia step in.Mia stopped short, her gaze taking in the scene. “Uh…” she slowly began to walk into the room, looking from one person to the other, hoping to deduce what was going on before she asked, "What's happening here?”She stopped beside Kevin. “Grandmother, Dad,” she acknowledged them before she turned to Kevin. Her eyes roamed his face. He looked calm, but then, Kevin always appeared calm and composed. “Kevin? What's going on?""Welcome,” Kevin said to her. “I called your line several times, but you didn't pick up.”“Yeah, I was in a meeting,” Mia explained as she began to reach for her phone in her bag. She unlocked it and saw several missed calls from him. She sighed and returned her gaze to him. “I was in a meeting, so I had to put my phone on silent. Did something happen?" Her gaze returned to the rest of the group.Morris scoffed. “What do you think? Once your ex-husband is around, you can just tell that a lot

She laughed so hard that some of the oldies in the restaurant chuckled along with her.Morris shook his head and chuckled lightly too. “How pathetic you are, Kevin."Mia, who had been staring at the back of Kevin's face as his words, stepped out from behind Kevin and glared at Morris.”Morris!"Morris rolled his eyes. "Why don't you tell him to stop lying so much and so stupidly.”Mia couldn't say anything as she felt embarrassed. She wanted to ask Kevin why he was lying but she didn't want to do so before her grandmother and Morris. So she just subtly shook her head at him.“I’m not lying,” he said cooly, disappointed that even Mia didn't believe him. Hadn't he proved himself enough? The laughter died in Mrs Perry's throat. Morris also stopped lying. They all regarded Kevin. There was no atom of humor on his face or in his words. “Are you serious?" Mia blurted.“What stupid question is that?" After the shock, the first thing that came to Mia was relief. Relief that she had decided to choose a restaurant that was never crowded. Right now, she could count the number of people in the restaurant in one of her hands and there'd still be a remainder. Another bonus was that they were all old people. So there was no flashing camera in their faces yet. It was a relief that soothed the shock. But the shock still remained. The worry for the things her grandmother would say to Kevin. And the fear of her own anger. How did they find her? Why were they even there? Why did they even find her in the first place? She had already rushed to her feet when she saw them. Now, she stood before her grandmother. “What are you doing here?" She looked between her grandmother and cousin. She was certain that neither of them would have come to the restaurant to eat. Apart from the fact that it was quite a trip from the company, it was too local for them. They preferred the fancy and flashy restaurants

Then afterward, she sent the name of the restaurant and the address to Kevin.Morris dragged his gaze away from the plate number of the taxi as his phone rang out.He briefly glanced at it before he picked it up and answered the call.“Hello.”He returned his eyes to the road.“Were you able to make it out in time?”“Yes, grandmother. The signing process was swift. Mrs Perry had a smile on all through as she signed her part and watched the rest of them sign where they had to sign.“Okay, so we're done," Mrs Perry said as she flipped through the papers. She nodded. She handed Kevin a copy. “You can go with your copy. All the rules are clear, are they not?”Anthony nodded. "They are.”Mrs Perry pinned him with a half glare. "No one should go against those conditions, Anthony. Ensure you ram it into the ears of your family members. Mia and I would do the same. If we really want to live in peace, then we should live without any air of hostility.”Anthony smiled. "Yes, Mrs Perry. I'll talk to them. Thank you for agreeing to this.”She shook her head. “It's nothing. I just want peace." She stretched her hands out to Anthony.Anthony took Mrs Perry's hands and shook them. “I look forward to many collaborations and meetings with the Perrys.""Same here,” Mrs Perry smiled, gripping his hands firmly."Mia?” Anthony called.

Mia regarded Anthony for a while, irritated by the smirk on his face. “You sound so sure,” she scowled at him.Anthony chuckled. He reclined in the seat and put his right leg over his left knee. Then he rested his hand on the back of the chair. "That's because I'm sure."Mia felt the insane urge to hurl him from the couch, but she needed to remain civil, especially now that grandmother had agreed to reconcile with his family. She crossed her arms over her chest. “So how did you know?"Anthony shook his head, a smile on his lips. “People really need to stop asking me that. I have my way of finding out stuff that I am determined to get answers to, and that's just it. Mia raised her brows. “I see. You have your ways and one of those ways is to kidnap people and intensely ask them questions like a maniac, right?”Anthony rolled his eyes. “That was just a test.”“A test!" Mia squeaked incredibly."Yes. You heard right.”“Right. That’s also why you still haven't been able to find out anyth

Anthony shook his head. “We let trivial things get in between us.” He sighed regretfully. “We're better than that, Mrs Perry. We should be building empires together and not keeping malice like kids. We should be making a plan to succeed. A plant “How can we still work together after what happened, Anthony?" That was Mrs Perry's first words. "How can we build these empires together if we don't trust one another? The seed of distrust has been sown, it's been watered and given enough time to thrive and grow. It's not just going to wilt and vanish.”"We make it wilt then. Trust, once broken, can be gotten back, believe me. We once trusted one another because of our actions. These same actions were what brought the mistrust and knocked us apart. To regain the trust we lost, all we need to do is act… we just need to act right and sincerely. And we'll be fine.”Mrs Perry regarded Anthony, processing his words. Apart from the fact that he was making sense, she was going to accept it anyway.

Anthony did the last button on his shirt and picked up his phone. He scrolled through his call logs as he walked to his shoe rack. Once he saw the phone number he needed, he dialed it. He placed the phone on speaker, chose the shoes he wanted from the shoe rack, and walked to his bed. By the time he lowered himself into his bed, the call ended without an answer, so he tried again. He once again put it on speaker and placed it on the bed beside him. As he waited for his call to be answered, he grabbed his shoes and began to put them on.“Hello?" Her smooth voice boomed through his phone's speaker and filled his room, loud and clear.“Good morning, Mia, I trust you slept well?" "I did. Why did you call so early?”"I'm on the way to your office now.”"Alright, then. I'll inform the security and receptionist so that they'll let you in without any hassle.”“Okay. See you in a few."Anthony chuckled slightly when Mia ended the call without a response. He picked up his phone and rose to hi
