Philip rubbed his hands together before he placed them on the steering wheel again, his gaze fixed on the entrance of the prison.

“How long is it going to take?" Betty sighed as she glanced out the car window for the umpteenth time that morning.

“We lived through yesterday; we'd do the same today. Let's be patient," Philip assured his wife.

Betty sighed and rested her head on the headrest attached to the car seat. She smiled. “I really can't wait to see my son. I miss him so much.”

Their son was supposed to be released the previous day as it was a Sunday, but for some reason, the list of the inmates that would be let off the hook didn't come out the previous day. It was rescheduled to come out the next day.

“Me too,” Philip said. "We really should thank the Lille family more.”

“Yes,” Betty answered. “It's all thanks to the Lille family. If it wasn't for them, who knows, Nathan might be stuck there forever.”

“I don't want to even dwell on that thought. We should just be thankful that

The brain behind the company's success, he deserved all the admiration that the world had to offer.Just as he was about to step into the elevator, someone rushed up to him.“Mr. Ross! Wait."He turned to the side to see his secretary running up to him. He waited for her to reach him, wondering what they needed his attention for this time. He quietly smirked to himself. He thought of how evident it was that the company thrived on his presence. There was no way it would function well without him.“Good morning, sir," the secretary greeted, slightly out of breath.“Morning," he answered crisply, slightly vexed that she didn't incline her head in a bow like sh

Philip's tongue swiped over his lips as he reread the name at the top of the webpage. “Who is the Print Odd? What company is that?" He rushed out. His heart slowly thumping against his ribcage. He didn't like this. Not one bit. His son's release and his name were on the line because of one stupid company.“It's one damned new company,” Anthony bit out as he rolled his shoulders and walked to one of the seats to sit down. Ever since he got notified about the paper, he had been in unrest, thinking of how to undo the whole thing. It bothered him more than it should.Philip walked over to the seat opposite the one Anthony. He sank into it. He had his head in his cupped hands as he pondered what to do. He had thought the issue of his son not getting relieved was due to something within his control; he didn't know it was something bigger. Betty sank into the seat beside her husband, her palm reassuringly on his shoulder as she clutched the phone in her other hand, wondering what this mean

The principal regarded the young man for a while, waiting to see the hint of a smile, waiting to see him wave his hand in the air and declare that it was a joke. But he didn't.The principal laughed anyway. “That was a good one, sir,” he said when he sobered up. The most amusing part for the principal was the straight face with which he said it. Most people would burst into laughter merely five seconds after uttering their jokes. When the principal saw the serious look that was still on the man's face, he chuckled again. “Goodness! Are you a comedian? Or you were once one? I'll pay to watch you perform live.”Kevin didn't laugh or smile. He just deadpanned, "It wasn't a joke, Mr. Principal; I'm not here to crack jokes. Neither am I a comedian nor was I once. I meant my words. I am the Phoenix Lord, Lisa's—Kevin's words were cut short as the principal, once again, lost his rein on his laughter and laughed boisterously. He covered his mouth when he was done. In between broken chuckles

Kevin's gaze was on the principal as he eyed the phone in Kevin's hand while they both waited for the mayor to pick up.Eventually, the mayor picked up. Kevin put the call on loudspeaker. “Hello, Mr. Kevin.”The principal thought his heart would burst out of his chest when he heard the mayor's deep voice fill the room. He gently rubbed his temple. He had hoped to hear a ‘Hello, who is this?’ so he could call off his bluff. But the Mayor had recognised the number, which only means that his line was saved in the Mayor's phone. How is that possible? The man doesn't even look like anyone important enough to have the audience of the mayor, talk less of being the Lord Phoenix.“Mr. Kevin, are you there?” The mayor called out.Kevin cleared his throat. "Yes, I'm here. I just wanted to ask if you have done the necessary things concerning what we discussed and what feedback I should give. They heard the mayor mutter something under his breath before he said earnestly, “I'm so sorry for not r

The principal, greatly angered that the little riffraff were about to cost him his career, walked closer to the bullies, a group of two girls and four boys. He recognised one of the boys; the mother had been to his office multiple times to complain about his bad grades, and each time, they'd enrol him in an extra class. “So this is what you do instead of attending classes and reading your books, right?”They shook their heads vigorously. "No, principal. We were just helping Lisa. We didn't know class had started,” one of the girls spoke up.“Helping Lisa?” He quipped, then asked heatedly, "What were you possibly helping Lisa to do?”The girl that had spoken looked to the other girl whose eyes widened before she was pushed towards the principal.“Her hair!” The girl squeaked. “Lisa wants long hair, so we're helping her. Milk helps hair grow longer,” she rushed out in one breath.“Yes, ask her!" The boys chorused and pointed at Lisa, who still had her face buried in Kevin's shirt. It w

“Lord Phoenix," Lionel's voice filled the space. “Is there anything you need me to do for you?" Kevin smirked as he pointed his left index finger to his phone that he held in his right hand, "Do you hear that?"“What? Sorry, Lord Phoenix. I didn't get that.”Kevin took in the kids' reactions, their bugged eyes and open mouths. The girl who had her arms stubbornly crossed across her chest as she proved to be a badass just a few minutes ago now had her hands by her side, clutching her gown as she shivered with fear. She was the one that looked the most scared. It was true that the loudest was usually always the dumbest.Kevin scoffed, shaking his head.“Lionel,” Kevin finally acknowledged him. “Yes, boss?""I'd call you later,” Kevin told him, then he hung up.All of the kids shook with fear as they gaped at Kevin. They couldn't believe they were in the presence of the lord Phoenix. The lead girl and the tall boy who had both seemed the boldest and most fearless were the ones who trem

“The right thing to do is to apologise to the person that you all offended. Who do you think is madder at you than I am right now?"Their eyes widened the same instant that one of them gasped, “Lisa!”At that moment, they all scrambled to their feet and raced one another outside the court, each wanting to be the first to apologise to Lisa.Kevin smiled as he watched them troop out of the door. He began to walk to the door so he could join them outside, turning the lights off on his way out.Outside, the kids were already in front of Lisa, apologising to her.Lisa and the principal gaped at them, wondering what Kevin had done to them. They even had smiles on their faces! Lisa squinted her eyes at them to see if their smiles were the evil ones they always gave her in class or the forced ones they flashed at her whenever there was a teacher around. But it wasn't! She couldn't believe her eyes; her bullies were genuinely smiling at her.The principal also looked at them, shocked but glad.

Just as Kevin took a step in the direction of the parking lot, he came to an abrupt halt as a thought hit him. He turned around and walked back into the school building. He was headed for the principal's office, but then made a detour when he saw the principal in the hallway. He appeared to be in a serious conversation with someone as they walked farther down the hallway.“Principal,” he called to stop him since he was walking as he spoke with the man.The principal instantly stood straighter, immediately recognising the voice he had just come to know about half an hour ago. It was forever etched in his memory. He turned around and saw him walking toward him. “Mr. Kevin,” he smiled as he began to walk toward him, determined to reach him before he took more than three strides. He reached him just after Kevin took his second stride.“You came back," he said when he stopped before him. Did he return to accept the invitation to the end-of-the-year party? "So what's the plan?” Alessia eventually asked. She may not like Mia's relationship with Kevin, especially now that they were divorced, but she was ready to go with whatever plan Kevin had to save her.Kevin was silent for a while as he ruminated on his plan again.Alessia's gaze was on him, waiting, ready to get into action. So was Jake, though he was still slightly fuming with rage. He wished he could just get the order to descend on Anthony and teach him a lesson he'll never forget.“He wants the company, doesn't he?" Kevin abruptly spoke up. "Then we'd give it to him." Alessia frowned, bristled, while Jake's brows furrowed in confusion."What do you mean, boss?” they asked at the same time."His condition is to have the company handed over to him, isn't it?”"That's what you said,” Alessia answered.Kevin nodded. “Then that's what we will do. The company will go off for twenty-four hours.”Alessia's lashes fluttered multiple times. She shook her head and gathered herself. It was

“Come on, Lisa, let's go," Howard called out to Lisa from the doorway where he stood, waving at the taxi driver that just arrived.“A minute, daddy,” Lisa called back. “Thank you, Mom,” she said to her mom as she took the paper bag that contained the cookies she had made. She carefully tucked the paper bag into her sling bag.“Bye, Mommy," she called out. But she stopped when she reached the kitchen doorway. "She hurried back to her mom. “Let me take one more for Dad," she said as she picked up one piece of cookie from the bowl. “You can have the rest. Bye.”“That's so sweet of you, sweetie. Bye. Kevin had thought it would all end with the divorce, but it didn't. He had placed his phone on the ‘do not disturb’ mode. He had been surprised when he unlocked his phone and saw his ex-wife's number top the list of the calls he had missed. She had called him over a dozen times. At first, he was irked but worried. Why would Mia call so many times? It was unusual. She certainly wasn't the type to call so many times. The highest she'd do was try to reach the person a couple of times before she'd let it go.All this was why he hadn't been able to shake off the thought that something might be wrong. Eventually, he called her back. She didn't really sound like herself. There had been a plea in her voice that Kevin could not just ignore. He sighed again as he got into the taxi that would take him to the address. He opened the location-sharing app where she'd shared her location with him and read it out to the driver, directing him once in a while.Eventually, he got to the place. The bar lo

Mia wondered how far out she had driven. Did Kevin lie when he said he'd be there? Was he going to ditch her like Donald did too?She turned on her phone's screen to check her call log to see how long it had been since their last call. She blinked when she took in the time displayed on her phone's screen, and her mouth formed an ‘O.’ It's just been three minutes. She sighed. She needed to just chill.Even when Kevin allowed himself to be used as a house boy, he was always unapologetically honest. She knew that if he said he was going to come, then he surely would. She just needed to remain patient. While she waited for Kevin, she sipped her water. Though she still yearned for a drink, maybe something to make her feel bolder, she concluded that it would be better if she was sober when he arrived. She didn't know what turn the conversation would take, or if she'd ever get to see him again; she didn't want to ruin this opportunity. As she sipped her drink, her mind wandering, she vaguely

Mia heard Kevin let out a long sigh. And she couldn't help but wonder what he thought of her. Clingy? Pathetic? She sure sounded like one. But she didn't care. At that moment, at least. She just wanted to see him, talk things out with him, and have that tranquillity she suddenly believed that she deserved.“Kevin, are you still there?" She bit her lips when he let out another sigh.“What do you want to talk about, Mia? What do we have to talk about?” He still sounded exasperated like he had sounded since he picked up the call, but there was the hint of concern in his tone. And Mia latched onto it like a lifeline.“Don't you think we have to talk? I understand that you already signed the divorce papers, but it can't just end like that. Please, let's meet even if it's the last time.”A brief silence. Then, “Which bar are you at?”Mia frowned. Her gaze went to the entrance and then around the bar, but there was no name or address anywhere inside.“I'm not sure,” she told him, feeling dum

Mia had always known that her grandmother never cared about her or anyone at all. She uses people for her gain, but, somehow, she fooled herself into thinking and believing that her case might be different. After all, she has given her life to the company she so cherishes, working tirelessly to keep it in the limelight, thus allowing her grandmother to keep her shoulder high… but it meant nothing to her. Perhaps her grandmother thought she was so mighty that everyone had to worship her.But just for once, couldn't she have pretended? Mia thought. Mia had never allowed herself to get this mad or show emotion like this. It was a telltale of how angry and saddened she was, yet her grandmother disregarded it like it was nothing.Mia regarded her grandmother for a while, wondering what would ever make her see anyone other than herself as a human with emotions.“What use are wishes if they don't get granted?” Mia spat at her grandmother, not bothering to keep the anger and distaste from her

It's only been about ten minutes, but it felt like twenty hours as Mia repeatedly tapped her feet on the floor. The stares had begun to irritate her, and she couldn't stop herself from turning to the restaurant's entranceway, hoping that her date would step in.“Good evening, ma'am,” another table attendant with a practiced smile similar to her colleague's stopped by her table. "What would you like to have?”Mia, despite the growing anger in her, managed to offer her a smile. "Water,” she grinned. "Sparkling water would do," she finished, her smile still intact. She was not interested in anything, but she couldn't allow the fourth attendant to walk up to her again. The lady's eyes fell on the table, and Mia followed her gaze. When she saw the crystal glass pitcher filled with water and the flute glass before her, she muttered, “Of course," and pressed her lips together. That was what she had told the first table attendant that she wanted. It was still untouched. Her cheeks flushed wi

The voice at the other end hesitated. Then he cleared his throat. “Mia. How are you?"“Fine."Mia felt a bit guilty. Donald wasn't a bad man. At least, compared to all the men her grandmother had tried to pair her with, he was a good man, but she just couldn't help it. He could have refused the date unless he got her consent, but then grandmother could be cunning whenever she wanted to be. But still… she couldn't soothe the raging anger in her. She couldn’t help but be mad at him. All of these were happening because of his presence.“Okay. So, my driver will be at your villa to pick you up."“Okay," she said, and before Donald could utter another word, she ended the call.It was with even more annoyance that she returned to the vanity mirror to continue dressing up.A while later, a knock came on her door. She stared at the door for a while. Could it be grandmother again? She wondered. On the third knock, she walked to the door and unlocked it.Her anger grew when she came face to fac

After a hectic day at work, Mia usually liked to shut down in every way she could and just have time to herself. Half the time, she's unable to enjoy the rest because her mind would either wander about the ways to make the company better, or something work-related would come up.Today, it wasn't work that was on Mia's mind as she paced her room, nor was it rest. She hissed as she walked back to her chair and dropped into it. The document she had opened on the laptop on the desk before her, a spreadsheet that showcased the employees that were contributing to the company's growth and how they contributed, was the last thing she wanted to deal with right then. She had decided to go through it, hoping she'd get her mind off what happened, but she couldn't get her grandmother's words or Kevin's out of her head. She found it hard to believe that Kevin had been made to sign a divorce paper, and worse, he thinks she was in on it.She couldn't believe she was really divorced.
