Kevin was finally able to convince Jake. Though he was utterly certain that his boss could handle himself, he was still reluctant to leave him. But Kevin was insistent and Jake didn't want to keep telling him that he would stay with him.

After he was done with his lunch; a meal of french fries and chicken, not the healthiest choice, but adequately filling, and was sure that lunch time was over, he placed a phone call to Vivian. She picked up immediately, “Hello, boss.”

"Come up to my office now,” he ordered succinctly.

"Okay, sir.”

A couple of minutes later, there was a knock on his door. "Come in," he said immediately without looking up from his desktop, aware that it was Vivian.

He looked up when the door was pushed open. “I called you here regarding tonight's dinner,” he went straight to business.

“Okay, boss.”

"It's just a few hours from now and since it was quite impromptu, there's yet to be a reservation for the team at any restaurant. I've just sent a list of highly and positiv

This is going to be interesting, Kevin thought as he nodded, a ghost of a smile on his lips. “Yes, it's me. You're at the right place.” He shrugged when Anthony still said nothing and just stared at him, his brows slightly furrowed. “After all, you sent your men to me with a message that you'd like to meet me.”Anthony blinked, hating that he let his surprise be evident like that. Yet, he could not help the question that came out of his mouth next. "So you're Mia's husband? The one that has been beating my men up?"Kevin laughed, unable to hold himself back. And this only made Anthony angrier. It made him feel stupid. Who does he think he is, he thought, clenching his fist? Kevin covered up, “I should actually be the one to ask the questions, Anthony. Because I have no idea why on earth you would want to meet with me.”Anthony's insides simmered with anger, but his curiosity still triumphed. “Why would you want to meet me too?" He demanded. Then he added before Kevin could give him a

Howard parked before a high-rise building. The glittering lights overhead surrounded the lettering of the restaurant's name, making it bold and bright enough even for someone a thousand feet away to see.It took a while for Howard to get a parking space. Once they successfully found a place to park, Kevin stepped down from the car.The restaurant looked as magnificent as it had looked in the pictures and videos; he just hoped their services were as good as the reviews, and they had said it.He began to walk to the restaurant entrance, and Howard followed after him, pocketing the car's keys.Magnificent was not enough to describe the interior of the restaurant. It was elegant, yet it felt like you'd just stepped into the cosiest space ever. As Kevin and Howard waited to be attended to at the counter, he took in the restaurant's design: the bright, limpid glass doors that led from one space to the other, making you crane your neck in curiosity as you wondered what may be behind those d

“So what are your plans to get Nathan out now?" Philip demanded, trying his best to turn a deaf ear to his wife's quiet sobs.Anthony dragged his gaze away from Betty's tear-stained face to her husband's. Betty's sobs were a bothersome hum that wouldn't let him think straight. If he knew he'd be subjected to such torture of listening to her weep like she just lost a child, he would have locked himself in his room. He met Philip's gaze and lightly nodded his head in Betty's direction. It was the worst time for them to have any conversation. Betty's sobs only increased by the second; the expression on her face grew even graver as tears continued to trickle down her cheeks.Philip sighed as he turned to Betty. He wrapped his arms around her shoulder. “It's okay, love. He'll be fine."She shook her head, sniffing as she wiped the tears off her cheeks. “How can you say that?" She sniffed. “No matter what happens now, he's bound to spend a long while in that hellhole. How would he survive?

Kevin walked out of his closet. He had a shirt draped over his right shoulder as he slid a black leather belt through the holes of his pants and buckled it. He walked to the vanity in the room. He stood before it and threw on his shirt. Then he picked up the cup of coffee his maid had brought for him a while ago. He brought it to his lips and sipped from it. Just then, his phone rang out. He glanced at where it still lay on his rumpled bed, where he had dropped it before he stepped into the bathroom to have his bath. With his mug of coffee still in his grip, he walked over to the bed and retrieved the phone. He glanced at the caller's ID before he swiped right to answer the call.“Good morning, boss,” Lionel's voice came on immediately.“Morning, Lionel. How are you?” Kevin drank from his coffee as he listened to his response."I'm fine, boss. Hope you had a great night!"A perfect night,” Kevin answered honestly. The joy on the faces of his employees and the endless sound of their c

Kevin stared at the phone. He contemplated if he should take the call or just return to what he was doing. He glanced between his laptop and his vibrating phone several times.Eventually, before he could make up his mind, the ringing came to a stop.He slightly shook his head as he turned away from the phone with a light sigh. His gaze returned to the credentials he had been looking through. Just as he moved to the next CV, his phone began to vibrate again. He sighed; he should have just put it in complete silent mode.“She never relents,” he muttered as he picked up his phone and answered the call.“Hello, Mia?" He said into the phone in a sing-songy tone. There was dead silence, and he had to pull back the phone to check if she was on the line. Did she butt-dial his number or something?“Mia? Are you there?”“Why is it so silent there?” Her voice came on, cool and crisp.“What?” He frowned."Where are you? And why is it so quiet?”He lowered himself into his seat and reclined in it

Mia's chest slowly rose and fell as she stared at her phone, recalling the conversation that she had with Kevin. “He said I'm acting like a child,” she scoffed. “Well, he didn't exactly say it,” she said to herself with an eye roll, “but he loudly implied it!” She finished in an accusing tone.Mia was aware that she might be acting like a kid, but she couldn't help it. Why would he be keeping secrets from her after all she has done for him?She remembered her last words to him before the phone call ended: her promise to visit the Phoenix Group just to see him, and she rolled her eyes. It wasn't like she had the time for any visit. There was enough work to keep her imprisoned in her office for days. She had just hoped that she'd get something out of him. She hoped that she might sense his fear or hear a noise in the background, anything, something to completely base her suspicions on, but she had gotten nothing! Absolutely nothing! Complete waste of time. Obviously, if she wanted to

Just as Jake drove past the gates of the Print Odd company, Kevin got down and headed into the premises while Howard and Jake parked. As usual, Kevin nodded and answered to the greetings of his employees as he made his way to his office. In his office, he lowered himself in his seat and grabbed his phone.“Good morning, sir,” his secretary greeted the moment she picked up the call.“Morning, Vivian. Meet me in my office now.""Alright, boss,” he heard her say and immediately her words were accompanied by the screech of chairs on the marble floor downstairs. He ended the call and waited for her, giving himself a few seconds before he got to work.In a couple of minutes, there was a knock on his door.“Come in,” he said without tearing his gaze away from the door.“Good morning, boss," Vivian repeated with a small smile, clutching her work tablet in her hand.Kevin nodded. “I need a list of all the valuable workers of the company.”There was a slight crease on Vivian's brows, but she q

After forced laughs and grins that made Mia's cheeks hurt, Donald finally left. Grandmother saw Donald off to the parking lot while Mia muttered some excuse about pending work and lack of time so she could stay back in her office. She just wanted to put an end to the advances her grandmother kept making toward the poor young man on her behalf. After the first time, she was sure that Donald had also noticed. She was so mortified that she wanted nothing more than to disappear from his presence. About a quarter of an hour later, when she was certain that Mrs. Perry would be back in her office, she left her office and stomped to Mrs. Perry's.She met her in a conversation with the head of the administrative staff. Mia could bet that she was complaining about the employee's lack of ‘agility’ or ‘efficiency’ again. She was never satisfied.Mia fully stepped into the room. The sound the door made as she closed it around her got the lady's attention, and she turned back to see Mia. “Good m

Mrs Perry couldn't resist the urge to bark out with laughter. She laughed so hard that some of the oldies in the restaurant chuckled along with her.Morris shook his head and chuckled lightly too. “How pathetic you are, Kevin."Mia, who had been staring at the back of Kevin's face as his words, stepped out from behind Kevin and glared at Morris.”Morris!"Morris rolled his eyes. "Why don't you tell him to stop lying so much and so stupidly.”Mia couldn't say anything as she felt embarrassed. She wanted to ask Kevin why he was lying but she didn't want to do so before her grandmother and Morris. So she just subtly shook her head at him.“I’m not lying,” he said cooly, disappointed that even Mia didn't believe him. Hadn't he proved himself enough? The laughter died in Mrs Perry's throat. Morris also stopped lying. They all regarded Kevin. There was no atom of humor on his face or in his words. “Are you serious?" Mia blurted.“What stupid question is that?" Mrs Perry said, her gaze still

After the shock, the first thing that came to Mia was relief. Relief that she had decided to choose a restaurant that was never crowded. Right now, she could count the number of people in the restaurant in one of her hands and there'd still be a remainder. Another bonus was that they were all old people. So there was no flashing camera in their faces yet. It was a relief that soothed the shock. But the shock still remained. The worry for the things her grandmother would say to Kevin. And the fear of her own anger. How did they find her? Why were they even there? Why did they even find her in the first place? She had already rushed to her feet when she saw them. Now, she stood before her grandmother. “What are you doing here?" She looked between her grandmother and cousin. She was certain that neither of them would have come to the restaurant to eat. Apart from the fact that it was quite a trip from the company, it was too local for them. They preferred the fancy and flashy restaurants

As Mia walked out of the company's premises, she tucked her car keys in her bag, deciding not to go with her car.“Good morning, ma'am," the security greeted her as they opened the gate for her."How're we all doing?” She returned their smiles."Very well, boss.”Outside the gate, Mia walked down the road a few miles before she saw a taxi driving down the road. She flagged down the taxi and got in.“Where are you headed, ma'am?" The driver asked Mia. Mia told him the me. Of the restaurant where she had decided that she and Kevin would meet. Then afterward, she sent the name of the restaurant and the address to Kevin.Morris dragged his gaze away from the plate number of the taxi as his phone rang out.He briefly glanced at it before he picked it up and answered the call.“Hello.”He returned his eyes to the road.“Were you able to make it out in time?”“Yes, grandmother. I'm on her tail now. I was able to make it outside before she got a taxi.”“A taxi?” There was surprise in Mrs Per

The signing process was swift. Mrs Perry had a smile on all through as she signed her part and watched the rest of them sign where they had to sign.“Okay, so we're done," Mrs Perry said as she flipped through the papers. She nodded. She handed Kevin a copy. “You can go with your copy. All the rules are clear, are they not?”Anthony nodded. "They are.”Mrs Perry pinned him with a half glare. "No one should go against those conditions, Anthony. Ensure you ram it into the ears of your family members. Mia and I would do the same. If we really want to live in peace, then we should live without any air of hostility.”Anthony smiled. "Yes, Mrs Perry. I'll talk to them. Thank you for agreeing to this.”She shook her head. “It's nothing. I just want peace." She stretched her hands out to Anthony.Anthony took Mrs Perry's hands and shook them. “I look forward to many collaborations and meetings with the Perrys.""Same here,” Mrs Perry smiled, gripping his hands firmly."Mia?” Anthony called.

Mia regarded Anthony for a while, irritated by the smirk on his face. “You sound so sure,” she scowled at him.Anthony chuckled. He reclined in the seat and put his right leg over his left knee. Then he rested his hand on the back of the chair. "That's because I'm sure."Mia felt the insane urge to hurl him from the couch, but she needed to remain civil, especially now that grandmother had agreed to reconcile with his family. She crossed her arms over her chest. “So how did you know?"Anthony shook his head, a smile on his lips. “People really need to stop asking me that. I have my way of finding out stuff that I am determined to get answers to, and that's just it. Mia raised her brows. “I see. You have your ways and one of those ways is to kidnap people and intensely ask them questions like a maniac, right?”Anthony rolled his eyes. “That was just a test.”“A test!" Mia squeaked incredibly."Yes. You heard right.”“Right. That’s also why you still haven't been able to find out anyth

Anthony shook his head. “We let trivial things get in between us.” He sighed regretfully. “We're better than that, Mrs Perry. We should be building empires together and not keeping malice like kids. We should be making a plan to succeed. A plant “How can we still work together after what happened, Anthony?" That was Mrs Perry's first words. "How can we build these empires together if we don't trust one another? The seed of distrust has been sown, it's been watered and given enough time to thrive and grow. It's not just going to wilt and vanish.”"We make it wilt then. Trust, once broken, can be gotten back, believe me. We once trusted one another because of our actions. These same actions were what brought the mistrust and knocked us apart. To regain the trust we lost, all we need to do is act… we just need to act right and sincerely. And we'll be fine.”Mrs Perry regarded Anthony, processing his words. Apart from the fact that he was making sense, she was going to accept it anyway.

Anthony did the last button on his shirt and picked up his phone. He scrolled through his call logs as he walked to his shoe rack. Once he saw the phone number he needed, he dialed it. He placed the phone on speaker, chose the shoes he wanted from the shoe rack, and walked to his bed. By the time he lowered himself into his bed, the call ended without an answer, so he tried again. He once again put it on speaker and placed it on the bed beside him. As he waited for his call to be answered, he grabbed his shoes and began to put them on.“Hello?" Her smooth voice boomed through his phone's speaker and filled his room, loud and clear.“Good morning, Mia, I trust you slept well?" "I did. Why did you call so early?”"I'm on the way to your office now.”"Alright, then. I'll inform the security and receptionist so that they'll let you in without any hassle.”“Okay. See you in a few."Anthony chuckled slightly when Mia ended the call without a response. He picked up his phone and rose to hi
