Old Brooks flicked the lighter a few times, but it wouldn’t light. His eyes grew red, and suddenly, he was squatting on the floor, sobbing painfully with his arms around his head.

“My daughter is gone…”

“Life is unpredictable.” Isaac puffed out a smoke ring. Beneath the streetlamp, the two men’s shadows stretched long beneath their feet.

Afterward, Old Brooks said he wanted to go to the funeral parlor to be with his daughter. Isaac didn’t tag along; instead, he hailed a cab to Riverview.
