STANDING ALONE

Elvis came to work like every other day, dressed in his normal working rig, looking nice as usual. He went to sign in like they usually do in their attendance register made available for workers in their hotel to know the attendants and the total number of workers in their organization.

8am had finally come as he had waited in earnest to resume his daily working activities and everyone began to move in their different stand where their customers and visitors could reach out to them and in case of any assistance. Elvis stood not too far away from his duty post chatting with one of his friends and a colleague, Nelson Adams.

Nelson Adams, short and lean, his eye was like that of Sanjay own. A character in an animation story “SANJAY AND CRAIG” frequently shown on the television. He had a black colored hair. He’s friendly and calm. Always feeling shy even around his fellow workers. He’s twenty-five years of age. He is from Argentina, but he stays with his mum after his parents got divorced

As they were discussing their life story’s, Elvis is being called to attend to his customers who needed something to eat and drink. He left nelson to attend to the person, on getting there he realized that it was Mrs. Helen Douglass who was the customer he will be attending to.

After he must have gotten what she requested for, he came back without wasting much of the time in serving the food and drinks to her.

He ranged the bell of her door but no response, however standing there would not be so bad, but he had other customers to attend to. Elvis stood there for about ten minutes before trying to ring the bell again, hoping to get a response this time round. Helen was in the bathroom taking her bath after coming back from a two weeks’ business trip she attended in Durban, Florida in the United States of America.

However, he wasn’t sure if it was the right thing to do, entering her room without being told to come in. who is there? Helen asked as she hears the sound of the door, she came out to look only to find out it was the waiter boy Elvis.

‘Please drop the food and drink next to the table, which was close to the window next to her bed. And stand by to get your pay. He stood and waited for her to come out from the bathroom, but he couldn’t stand any longer as his legs were starting to pain him. He decided to sit on the bed after standing up for thirty minutes to wait for her as she instructed.

Elvis wondered how long does it take for Helen to finish bathing; it was longer than he expected.

Helen comes out from the bathroom, apologizing for having taking so much time in the bathroom, tying a big white towel around her body. Not knowing that her towel wasn’t really tight on her, it fell right in front of Elvis, as she was about to pick it up, her husband comes in.

Seeing what was happening, he rushed towards Elvis and gave him a slap, pushing him on the ground, without giving him a chance to explain.

Helen tried to calm her husband down, trying to explain to him that it was an accident, but he pushed her aside to continue to beat innocent Elvis.

To him, what he saw was a proof that that can never change and that his eyes can’t lie to him.

His loud voice made people to gather including his archenemy Javier, Elvis has been falsely accused of a crime he didn’t commit because of a scene which wasn’t his fault it happened.

Advice was given to him, to check the closed-circuit television, but before they could get there it has already been removed. Elvis was doomed.

Right in front of his eyes the crowd were sneering at him in total disappointment, all his friends made it clearly that they wouldn’t like to be anywhere near him. In their eyes, they turned him into a rapist.

Bruises were all over his body, as a result of the beating given to him by Alvin. People whisper, point and stare as he walks by. He was dragged on the floor straight to the entrance door. Alvin had already called police to come and arrest him, but he shouted, I’m innocent! He cried out, but it fell on deaf ears.

As a shock, Elvis passed out, he was taken to a nearby hospital where he was admitted but was still under police custody.

Later that same day, he had woken up. Being accused of the second time is extremely painful for him. He lost his freedom because of misunderstanding.

“you need to call someone to come and bail you?” officer,

He thought for a moment. His grandmother,’ she didn’t answer and the only thing he could do was to leave a message.

He started breathing extremely fast, he knew he was in a pickle.

“Hey,” the officer barked, “I need another number of a guardian, or you’re on your way to jail.”

“Jail? I still don’t know what exactly what I did wrong.”

“I don’t need your attitude, young man, only a name and number”.

Shortly after, Nana called back.

The conversation was brief. My hands, still handcuffed behind my back, bruise from the beating had already changed my face and my eye were swollen. I rested my head on the window and stared out into the dark night.

I could see nana walking slowly, looking worried, and I was sorry she was included in all this.

She could barely recognize his handsome grandson because of the bruises that covered his face.

Hello sir, I’m looking for my grandson by the name Elvis?

The officer that arrested Elvis recognized the voice and immediately showed her where his grandson was.

After she must have settled the bills, the officer finally removed the cuffs and blood quickly rushed back to my hands.

The walk home took an eternity. Less interested to strike a conversation, but nana understood, and she decided not to say or ask me anything. Everything seemed unreal, people I trusted and worked for treated him like an outcast.

His friends neglected him, and when they saw him been beaten by Mr. Alvin. Even when he was arrested, none of them came to his rescue.

He recalled back on how he was accused of stealing from his former boss, who brought about his dismissal from work without any pay of his two months’ salary that was delayed.

As soon as they got home, as she was helping him to massage his wounds, the tears he held back earlier began streaming down on his face as he explained everything to her.

Nana tried to console him with her kind words, and he felt better compared to how he felt earlier.
