STEALING THE SPOTLIGHT

It was a bright sunny day on July 18th and the clock clocked five, Elvis woke up from his bed feeling excited, he went straight to his bathroom, to freshen up and prepare for the big day ahead. Humming so loud that his Nana whose bedroom was at a distant could hear him.

Elvis was so happy, that he felt like jumping as he walked through the streets, he couldn’t wait to get home to tell his Nana how his interviewers commended his comportment.

Nana was already worried about Elvis that she had to wait outside the house, it wasn’t up to an hour Elvis appeared smiling. The old lady was glad he was back, and she went ahead to ask him, how did everything go?

Elvis went ahead to tell her everything that happened. She was happy and glad. It wasn’t up to a week that he got his employment letter from the office he went for their interview. And he was instructed to start work as from the following week, but the young man was so eager to start the next day.

But it wasn’t going to be possible because the email he got had specified the day he is to resume which was the following week, and he will have to comply to it.

Elvis had no qualifications for them to have employed him, but to him, he had God, and he believed in him.

Elvis resumed on Monday, July 18, 2022. Dressed in his outfit chosen by his Nana. With his bag, he crossed over his head. He had eaten his breakfast as early as he could, in other, to beat the traffic of Bridgerton road.

He was able to enter a cab that took him straight to his direction because if he were to trek there, he wouldn’t make it there on time.

Furthermore, he got to work 15 minutes past 7, he went straight to the receptionist office, where he took him to their director’s office Mr. Alvin Douglass.

On reaching his door, he rang the bell of his office, but there was no response.

After two to three minutes, he rang the bell again, this time longer than he did before. Response is heard, he entered the office, and he was welcomed by a young gentleman who he was directed to meet earlier on.

His name was boldly written on the name tag facing adjacent to the entrance door, Mr. Alvin Douglass, managing Director Hotel Del Luna and suites.

Mr. Alvin Douglass, age 28, lean, hard, in the surface he appears good-looking, even handsome; he has a quiet steady look and a disarming smile which flashes from nowhere, lighting up his whole face. But behind that smile, around his dark eyes, in his gaunt cheek.

At a younger age, he had achieved so much, so he thought. Young man, how may I help you? Elvis went ahead to introduce himself and the reason he was in his office; he was touched by his politeness.

Forgive my manners, please have a seat. Elvis sat down and waited for a directive to be taken to his new duty post. Five minutes later, He called his secretary whose name was Mikael to show him around and to teach him everything he is to learn and the rules and regulations he must know in the other to abide by it.

As the book where the rules and regulations were written was handed over to him, he almost screamed because it looked much more like a textbook than what it was called.

He was given his working rig, as it was one of the most important rules to abide, which was to wear your working rig before standing in your duty post.

Elvis felt maybe this job will give him more connection that he needed, but he had no idea the worst was yet to come.

He had already spent weeks in his new place of work and had mastered the names of their customers like; the rich, the middle class and the average. He felt blessed for having provided this opportunity of meeting people of that class.

His eagerness to work, and his good manners, had paved the way for him and had won him his tenth and eleventh award, plus the previous ones he got from his former place of work.

He is a very easy-going person, and this made many customers who came to the hotel for one thing or the other to request for him. He got admirers, but he was always careful in other not to get himself sacked which may result in his image being tarnished,

He wasn’t much interested in relationship; neither was he interested in falling in for love he believed all these will eventually come once he had already made it in his life. He was just a twenty-three-year-old guy trying to survive his everyday life in Barbados, and his quote was; ‘THERE’S TIME FOR EVERYTHING’.

Five months had gone, and everything was going smoothly for him.

Mrs. Helen Douglass came for a business meeting at their hotel, and at the same time she came to meet her husband.

She got attracted towards Elvis, because of his dedication and good character.

She felt he should be her personal waiter whenever she comes around.

She doesn’t want anyone else except Elvis, people from afar would think they had something going on between them. And Elvis constantly tries to hide from her because of what people may say.

The lady just liked him because he does his job well directly. He is the best worker in their office, and they would want to keep him because he brings customers for them.

Javier Iniesta, light skinned, tall fellow with a brown eyed, not so fine like some of his coworkers, but his character could truly say much about him. He was much older than Elvis, very wicked, and he was such a bully and a liar. He wouldn’t mind selling you out for the money.

It is unclear to me why most of my colleagues don’t like me, but the truth is that I try to be friendly to everyone.

one day they “act” like friends, the next day they look at me and say “we are not friends”! Furthermore, they nicknamed me, “the Seeker” not the person who sees things, but who always seeks for approval and wants to be liked by everyone. I am not like that at all, it’s just that I want at least one person to be my friend! Is that too much to ask?
