Chapter 11

“THEY GOT SOULS!!!” The cultist, managing to withstand Drake’s attack, yelled as he swung his spear at him.

Panicking for a moment Drake leaned aside to let the spear safely slide to the ground but before that could happen the cultist received a smack to the face that sent him flying several feet away.

The one who punched him was none other than the red haired kid, Rollo. Though the blue haze surrounding him raised questions, Drake knew they had no time for them.

Pure luck. That was the reason he had managed to take down their first two opponents. The ones that followed seemed to have their guard up as the strange haze enveloped all of them.

Without having to say a word Drake and Rollo started following a distinct pattern. Drake would attack first to draw the cloaked men’s attention while Rollo knocks them aside with one punch.

Obviously that alone wasn’t enough to end the older, and clearly much stronger, black cloaked cultists. However it gave the two the opening they needed to continue their escape.

They ran and ran without giving a thought to where they were heading. Drake just followed the rails as he attempted to avoid the cultists, he didn’t have the leisure to plan their path.

A couple of minutes later he realized that they had ascended several slopes. They passed multiple tunnels along the way but ignored all of them as they didn’t know where those led to.

The cultists chasing them became much more difficult to deal with. Now that they were aware that the two had Beast Souls they changed their approach handling the situation more carefully.

That said, Drake couldn’t help feeling that they still had the upper hand. It might be thanks to the Soul he had eaten being of a higher grade, still it felt strange that the cultists were easily defeated even though they were adults and had the time to gain experience and grow theirs.

“STOP RIGHT THERE!!!” Another cultist shouted.

[SKILL: First Impact]

Another blue stripe flashed in the corner of Drake’s vision as he punched him in the gut. Rollo finished the guy with a knee to the face.

“Drake!” the kid called, pointing at something on the other side of the cavern.

With his entire focus on their pursuers Drake failed to notice when the area gradually brightened. The walls of the cavern where covered in the sparkling blue color of the crystals that seemed to have grown brighter. The icicles hanging from the ceiling came into sight seemingly reflecting the light entering from what was without a doubt their way out.

“GO!” Drake shouted, turning around to stop a cultist who had just caught up to them.

“WHY THE HE-"

Avoiding the spear thrust at him he did something other than just punching. Hitting the cultist's extended arm Drake caused him to drop his weapon then latched on to his collar before sending him flying in a shoulder throw.

Can’t believe that worked! Glad I took those judo lessons!

Having bought them some time Drake once more dashed toward the exit. Rollo glanced back at him and slowed down a bit. He was about to yell, telling him to move his legs, but then decided otherwise.

They didn’t know what awaited them outside so he couldn’t risk the kid going out first. It felt like the part in a movie where a sudden death occurs out of nowhere just for the sake of shock value, Drake was hell bent on not letting that happen.

Catching up to the red haired kid he finally noticed the chilly wind and the snow coming in from the exit. The ground was covered in a blanket of white as well informing them that the storm has yet to end.

Not that they had much of a choice. The black cloaks were on their tails so they couldn’t just stop and rethink their plans.

“Make sure you don’t lose me in the snow!” Drake said, laughing at himself for telling the local kid to not get lost.

“Yeah!” Rollo replied with a grin.

The two finally reached the exit but were surprised to find that they still had a gentle slope before they were really outside. The road ahead was clear and nothing was in their way. If anything, only the snow covering the ground and the icy wind hindered their advance.

The light intensified as the two finally reached their destination but sadly in the end it seems they had chosen the wrong path.
