Hiding behind a boulder, Drake read the contents of the blue screens that popped up one after the other.
“FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK!!!”
His eyes were bloodshot and his teeth clattered uncontrollably. A layer of frost gradually enveloped his face and despite the thick clothes he stole from the storage room, he felt his temperature dropping by the second.
Why is this happening to me? What did I do to deserve it? Why do I have to go through all of this?
~[ ]~
The moment he stepped out of the cavern a wave of intense cold washed over him. The light had forced his eyes shut, and by the time he opened them the chaotic sounds of the surroundings sent tremors through his body.
it was then that he saw it.
Wings of blue cut through the air, the feathers coating them like ice crystals with white tips. Talons long enough to be sharpened tree logs. A deep red color painted their tips as if they were quills dipped in ink.
A sharp cry rang out from the creature's blood-covered beak. Its form was that of a bird, but no bird could have grown to such a size.
The shadow it cast while flying high above covered everything under it. With each flap of its majestic wings, a storm of ice and snow blasted everything, bringing with it a cold so intense it pierced the bones.
Three deep blue crystals stood on its head, a crown that proved its standing as the king of this land.
For a very long moment, all Drake could do was stare. The creature was a work of art. A majestic being overshadowing anything he had seen in his life, but for all of its beauty, all Drake could see was a monster. A blood-drenched abomination raining terror on everything that dares to enter its domain.
Drake felt a warm feeling spread through his pants. Nothing could have frightened him enough to let it out, not even the spear of fanatic cultists. Faced with such a calamity, however, the boy was made aware of his weakness.
“God… It’s the King of Frost…”
Rollo's trembling voice brought Drake back to his senses only for another sharp cry to take them away. The two fell to their knees holding on to their necks as air refused to enter their lungs. An instant later, spears of solid ice rained down from above.
A few pierced the ground around them but luck had it so they wouldn't be hit. But that was where their fortune ended. The ground was covered in snow. Despite that, one could still see veins of frost spreading from spear-like icicles.
Drake knew nothing of what might happen if one of those veins touched him or the boy. He wasn't willing to risk learning, however. With great struggle, he pushed himself to his feet, grabbed his red-haired companion by the collar, and reached for the sensation he had experienced many times before.
[Skill: Quick Step]
The world around them blurred and the two arrived at a faraway boulder in just a couple of steps. Drake chose the location at random, but to his luck, it turned out to be outside the area bombarded by the ice spears.
Drake leaned his back against the frozen rock and forced air into his lungs. As he gasped, the cave they escaped from came into sight. The cultists chasing after them were nowhere to be seen.
It made sense. There was a giant bird flying around and the sky was raining ice spears. In their minds, the prisoners couldn't possibly survive and thus there was no point in chasing them beyond that point.
The moment of reprieve Drake was painstakingly able to secure had to be interrupted by the appearance of several blue screens. His eyes darted around as he absorbed the text and the terror he experienced grew with each word.
What do you mean one of the strongest!? Why the hell is it here!!?
Drake could only stare at him in stunned disbelief, but then the rage took over and he turned to the red-haired boy.
“HEY! WHAT IS THAT THING!!! WHY DIDN’T YOU SAY ANYTHING ABOUT IT!!!?”
The boy was speechless for a few seconds before shouting back.
“HOW WOULD I KNOW! THAT THING ISN’T SUPPOSED TO BE REAL!!!”
Another wave of icy wind swiped the area.
"THE HELL DO YOU MEAN IT'S NOT REAL!? LOOK! IT'S THERE GODDAMN IT!!!!"
The boy with red hair was silent for a while then skidded over to the edge of the boulder. He hesitated, his body trembling. Taking a deep breath, he slowly peeked his head.
“That... that's the King of Frost, no doubt about it." He said after a while, his voice calmer than before. "I only heard of it in stories. The elders call it the guardian deity of these mountains."
Though he heard him loud and clear, Drake's mind refused to believe anything he said. He barely accepted the existence of Magical Beasts and Souls so how could he accept that something that is thought to be a myth by the people of this world exists?
No, that doesn't matter right now!
Escape. That was the only thing he should be thinking about right now.
He focused on the map in the corner of his sight and caused it to spread. He wanted to check for exits but when he saw what was on it despair dealt him a powerful blow.
The map showed a roughly circular shape with several holes in it. He recognized that those represented the rocks and boulders scattered around the snow field since the white dot representing him was behind one of them.
Near the edge of the circle, on the side opposite to where he and the boy were, was a large yellow dot moving a little to the left then to the right. It took him a while but he understood it represented the giant blue bird.
Hm? Something isn’t right…
In front of the big yellow dot were several red ones scattered at random intervals. The red dots were supposed to represent enemies so Drake didn't understand why there were so many right behind the boulder pressed against his back.
“So this is what they are after…”
Rollo's voice drew his attention, and though fear crippled his limbs, Drake slowly pulled himself to the edge and peeked at what was happening in the snowy field.
When they escaped the cavern, the two were too busy gawking at the majestic creature in the sky and paid no heed to what was happening on the ground.
The scene could only be described as a painting depicting the brutality of war. Men in full-plate armor ran around carrying bladed weapons of every kind. Others dragged shields that towered over them in size. Others were on the ground, some frozen solid and others pierced with translucent spears.
“FLAME THROWERS!!!”
Someone among them shouted. The next moment the snow field was painted orange as multiple flame torrents suddenly shot from the ground toward the flying beast.
“PREPATE THE CHAINS!”
The same man shouted again as the flames hit their target. Drake glanced at the map once more and realized that the randomly scattered dots were actually gathered in groups of six creating a formation of some kind.
The leader was without a doubt the one shouting commands from the very back. His armor was crimson, unlike the others, and around him were several rows of shield bearers.
“INCOMING!”
The man in crimson armor shouted again. Up in the sky, the giant bird was readying for another attack. Particles of light gathered together forming sharp icicles that grew in size until they were larger than the armored knights.
A wave of wind followed the bird swinging its blue winds and the ice spears blasted down like missiles.
The bombardment scattered snow like it was dirt and dust. Some of the icy spears pierced empty grounds while others found their way to the soldiers. Those with shields were able to save themselves while the rest were left to be impaled where they stood.
As he watched the massacre with his own eyes, Drake never noticed the red dots disappearing from the map in the corner of his sight.
I watched in horror as one of the shield bearers had his entire head cleanly shaved off because he chose to peek out a little too early. The commander who I thought was hiding behind a wall of shields took out a strangely designed broad sword. Though it appeared quite heavy he swung it with one arm sending out a crimson arc of flames that collided with the icicles evaporating them before they could reach his squad.“ACTIVATE THE CHAINS!!!”Though they received quite a number of casualties in the last attack the knights still went for a counter. From the center of each group beams of purple light shot out toward the beast. They were too fast for something of its size to evade and before it could react they wrapped themselves around its wings and le
“Hey Peter…”“Hm? Is something wrong?”A tall white door stood imposingly in front of him. He reached for the know, twisting it before pushing and taking a look inside. All he saw was the light flashing from a screen in the corner. It was an unpleasantly dark room.“I’ve been looking for an hour now but I can’t find the way. Is this game broken?”The words came out of his mouth however he wasn’t the one saying them. The voice sounded foreign to him even though it was supposed to be his own.His hand felt different as well, but that didn’t matter right now. What caught his attention was the small device he held. “Ha~~~h…”Once dinner was done Rollo showed Drake the way to the bath where he washed himself and took a dip in the tub.[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION][The natural healing qualities of the spring has removed your fatigue and restored your vitality.]Though the red haired boy call it a tub in reality it was something more akin to a huge wooden barrel filled with water coming out of an opening in the wall.According to Rollo there is a natural hot spring near the village from which they get the water for their baths. As Drake submerged all the way to his neck he felt his stiff muscles relax and the weariness wash off. “Hey Drake, it’s time to- ah! You’re already up.” “Well, more like I didn’t sleep at all.” Sunrise arrived while Drake was still fiddling with the System trying to understand it a bit better. Rollo was surprised that he had been up the entire time, worrying that he would be too sleepy when they meet his grandfather later on. All-nighters weren’t really a problem for Drake as he had been pulling more and more of those as his entrance exams were drawing close. Not to mention it has been less than half a day since he woke up so there is no way he’d be sleepy right now. “Breakfast is ready.” Rollo said. “I’ll show you around the village after. Grandpa has some things to take care of in the morning so we still got time.” The
At the far end of the village was a huge building far bigger than what Drake has seen so far. Rollo called it the Winter Hall. The naming comes from how it’s used as a shelter from the harsh blizzards that assault the region during winter. Since the population is small everyone need each other to survive so they have to look out for one another to make sure no one freezes in their homes.Drake was surprised when he heard that Rollo’s grandfather is actually the village chief. Though he don’t know what someone in his position does he understand that the old man is the highest authority there and is responsible for keeping this place going. He’s huge… Drake thought, immediately recognizing the man in question. “Grandpa, good morning.” Rollo said when they arrived.“Rollo! Good timing!” At first Drake was expecting an old man with a white beard who’s barely able to stand, however the one standing before him wasn’t someone you’d expect to have married grand children. He was a literal
“Hey, Rollo, did you do anything to strengthen your Beast Soul?”The system was based on video games so Drake doubted the residents of this world would know anything about it. He suspected that the way they interpret their powers is totally different from how he does, which meant they might have a different method to gain strength.“Nothing in particular.” The red head replied. “I was forbidden from leaving the village until now so I couldn’t try anything.”“I see…”Thinking about it for a moment, Drake concluded that Rollo had gained the required amount of Essence from the two quests they had completed, same as him. That led him to think that the rewards the system offered might not be something it creates on
“Phew~”Wiping the sweat off his forehead, Rollo let go of the axe he had been swinging for a few minutes now.“Good work.” Drake said as he passed him the water skin. The read haired boy chugged a mouthful before returning it then shifted his gaze to the pile of fire wood he had chopped so far. They were about to be done preparing the second WalkinRoot they had hunted, taking turns cutting the trunk into small enough pieces to fit inside the hearths.“Alright. I’ll finish the rest.” Drake said as he grabbed his axe.Rollo moved aside and let him get to it. Placing one of the large pieces of wood on the stump, he lifted his axe
A lot of things happened after the battle against the Dragonspears. When they reunited with the others, Drake learned that Peter had saved Edda and her hound as well. Turns out the two were actually in a secret relationship and she was the one who came up with the whole plan of destroying his contract and escaping. Apparently she was of a rare race of Beastkin that possessed healing abilities. Since her bloodline was too valuable the Dragonspears wanted to make her a part of their family instead of enslaving her then harvesting her Soul. Healers were a rare commodity so even if they're Beastkin they're always treated well. That said, she couldn't get over the fact that she was sold like an object and was looking for the perfect opportunity to betray them. The weirdest part of all was that she had fallen in love with Peter despite him being nothing but a cloud of smoke. Drake was confused about how they planned on making it work, however the girl said that a magic that allows Beastki
"Why…?" Rollo asked his voice hoarse. He was on the ground, his lower half was lost, both of his arms as well. His wounds were frozen preventing him from regenerating. The frost was spreading killing his cells one by one. "I dont really know what you were expecting." Drake said, scratching the back of his head. He hated Rollo. Killing him was only natural. Still, seeing a kid laying on the ground having suffered such grave injuries Drake almost felt bad for him. Almost. He wasn't about to feel sympathy toward someone who planned to enslave him. "I… thought… we could be… friends…" the boy struggled to speak. His lips had turned blue and the breaths he struggled to release with each word turned into white fog. "I wanted you… by my side… we could've… we could've ruled… the upper realm…" "Friends? That's a really bad joke." Drake snorted, mocking the idea. "I only saw you as the bastard who wants to turn me into a weapon. I guess you have succeeded in that regard. Bet you didn't exp
Something about Rollo began to change. The aura covering his body began to fluctuate. He dropped his spear and his blue eyes turned bloody red. Drake heightened his guard. He felt that something odd was happening. The red haired boy had used the effects of the redacted title to force his main Soul to evolve. It was a Red Dragon. Though the name was simple, it was the Soul of one of the seven primal beasts that once ruled over the upper realm, the ones that put an end to the first Eternal Night. The final stage of its evolution is the Light Dragon. It was as rare as the Eternal Night, never found in the wild and can only be reached by cultivating the beast Soul with the help of the system. All of the other Souls Rollo had assimilated were consumed to gather enough Essence for the evolution. The forced process did the same to him as it did to Drake and caused him to lose control as he entered the second stage of assimilation.Scales began to grow on his arms and legs. A thick white t
The moment Drake chose the YES option everything suddenly went black. He couldn't see or feel, it was as if he was pulled out of his body, left as an accumulation of thoughts without a physician form. Time passed. He didn't know how long but at some pont he opened his eyes and looked around him. The black castle was a mess. Corpses everywhere missing most of their remains. Weapons of different types and sizes, broken and destroyed. Armor and shield thrown around bent into unknown shapes. What caught his attention the most were the crystals scattered around and the strange artifacts here and there. They didn't look like anything he recognized. Little did he know what they were magic weapons that had been used on him. The black castle was destroyed. Most of its buildings had crumbled. The walls surrounding it rendered to dust. Upon further inspection Drake noticed white flames here and there eating at anything that had yer to burn. Thay was enough of a clue for him to tell what had
Drake Went around hunting the apprentices looking for him. He approached them peacefully then took the chance to erase them using his void hand. Sadly it didn't go that well till the end. As he was erasing the forth one the fifth saw it and took off. Drake was unable to catch up with him and he ended up warning the servants who went around warning the other apprentices or guards. It was a shame that he couldn't go about it in a more quiet manner, but nothing could be done about it. Tossing the oil lamp he was carrying, drake coated both of his arms in the black flames. He faced the oncoming enemies and prepared to attack."What are we supposed to do!?" One off the guards asked. "He's an important guest of the lord, right?""They said he had killed some apprentices. Until we do a more thorough investigation we have to restrain him for now!"They didn't have to wait though as they got the proof they needed soon enough. The first guard to approach Drake had half of his body erased. Dra
Drake gave Layla and Lily a few minutes to have their reunion, however they needed to move quicker so he told them to save it for a later time. They needed to get moving before the main members of the Dragonspear family are informed of his disappearance. After changing Lily into new clothes, Drake accessed his system and began pooring all the Essence he had into his beast Soul.[《Starless Night. "Alright." The shadow said. "Everything is in place. Let's get going."Drake took a deep breath then nodded. The time to execute the plan has come and so the two began to move. The shadow enveloped Drake teleporting him to the first location."... Drake?" Layla said, seeing her the boy fall out of the sky.Roland was there as well, taking a fighting stance the moment he saw the strange shadow."We got no time. Come with me." Drake said. Without asking any questions the two came closer and were enveloped by the shadow as well. The next time they opened their eyes they were in an unfamiliar location. Roland was on his knees in no time, struggling to breath. Layla was able to tell they were in the upper realm, and not just anywhere but in a Nexus point where magical Essence was concentrated the most."We are going to revive Lily." Drake said, opening his inventory and taking the little girl's soul. "Wait. What's going on? Isn't this… too sudden?" Layla asked."I'll go keep an eye on th
"So? How are we going to do this?" Drake asked. "You're asking for my help so you should already know how to remove the curse, right?" "Huh? Do you believe me now?" The shadow spoke, his voice containing a hint of joy."Nope. I didn't even decided whether to help you or not." Drake said, waving a dismissive hand. "First of all, let's hear what you have. I'll decide after I hear your plan."... okay, that work just fine, I guess." The shadow said with a sigh. "When I was still a kid someone sold me to the Dragonspears. The slavery contract is a magical item that binds me to the one who signed on it, the family head.""You arent going to ask me to kill him, right?""Of course not!" The shadow exclaimed. "Well, it is one of the possible solutions, however killing that monster is impossible. Our only choice is to find the contract and destroy it.""So? Why dont you do it already?" Drake asked."Because I can't." The shadow replied. "I can't defy my owner, remember? That means I can't bre
"GOD FUCKING DAMN IT DRAKE! WHAT WERE YOU THINKING!!!" The shadow was really pissed off. He had barely managed to teleport them outside the cave before it collapsed. Now they were in the field with the new Frost King's corpse Rollo had killed a while ago."You could've gotten us both killed!" The shadow went on, berating Drake for his unreasonable actions. Drake didn't give him much thought, gripping his sword and preparing to continue his attacks."What the fuck do you think you're doing!!?""I don't? Killing the bastard who's trying to use my dead brother to make me do something?" Drake said, cauting his blade with the black flames."I am your brother!" The shadow said. "Well, I did die and got reborn so I guess you have a point. But it's really me! You gotta believe me!""Yeah right." Drake went on to attack, swinging his sword again and again. "You're still as crazy as ever." The shadow said, swooshing here and there avoiding the flurry of attacks. "Did you like this world? Vi
