CHAPTER 3: THE AWAKENING
last update2025-01-27 18:50:17

The explosion hit with such force that Kiera was thrown backward, her body

slamming into the ground with a sickening crunch. For a moment, everything

went dark. Her head spun, and her ears rang, drowning out the chaos

unfolding around her. Her helmet visor had cracked, and the blaring alarm

inside her suit warned of a breach. She groaned, struggling to push herself to

her feet.

“Captain! Captain, are you alright?” Jace’s voice crackled through her comms,

filled with urgency.

Kiera blinked rapidly, trying to focus. Her vision swam, the world around her

spinning as dust and debris filled the air. The mission had gone from bad to

worse in an instant. She could hear the distant sounds of gunfire and

explosions as the rebels, now fully engaged, fought to take control of the base.

But there was something far more pressing.

The weapon. The mysterious core that had been powering up, threatening to

tear the entire base—and perhaps Mars itself—apart.

“Damn it,” Kiera muttered through clenched teeth, shaking off the

disorientation. She reached up and tapped the cracked visor, switching her

helmet’s display to its backup mode. The faint outline of Jace’s figure

appeared in front of her, his face obscured by the darkening sky and rising

dust.

“We need to move,” Jace said urgently, grabbing her arm and helping her

stand. “It’s getting worse, Captain. The core’s destabilizing faster than we

thought.”

Kiera stumbled forward, her mind racing. “Where’s the woman? The one

guarding the weapon?”

Jace shook his head. “She disappeared. She must’ve known what was

coming.” He paused, his eyes scanning the area. “But you should know this—

she was right about one thing. Whatever that thing is, it’s not just a weapon.

It’s… it’s alive.”

Kiera’s pulse quickened. She turned to face the weapon’s location, but the

structure was barely visible through the smoke and debris that now choked

the air. The ground beneath her feet trembled with the core’s increasing

energy output, a low hum reverberating through her chest.

“Stay with me, Kiera,” Jace said, pulling her away from the wreckage and back

into the shelter of the nearby rocks. The rest of the squad had already formed

a defensive perimeter, their weapons trained on the approaching rebels.

“What about the weapon?” Kiera asked, her voice tight with tension. “We need

to destroy it before it destroys us.”

“Not sure we can do that anymore,” Jace said, his eyes flicking nervously

toward the ruins. “The Guardians… they’ve activated something. That

explosion earlier wasn’t just a random hit—it was a signal. They’re awake.”

Kiera’s heart skipped a beat. She had heard whispers of the Guardians—the

ancient race that had once called Mars home—but no one had ever truly

believed in them. They were supposed to be nothing more than a myth. Now,

it seemed those myths were becoming a very dangerous reality.

“We can’t let this go any further,” Kiera said, shaking off the fear creeping into

her thoughts. “We need to stop it. Now.”

Jace nodded grimly. “We’re not going to be able to destroy it by just hitting it

with a missile or EMP. It’s beyond that. But maybe we can contain it.”

Kiera’s mind spun with the implications. Contain it? How were they supposed

to contain a weapon that had the power to level entire colonies and potentially

turn the entire planet into an uninhabitable wasteland?

“There’s gotta be another way,” Kiera muttered. But as she spoke, the ground

rumbled once more, and a chilling voice crackled through her comms, sending

a chill down her spine.

“You cannot stop what you have awakened. It will end you.”

It was the same robotic voice they had heard earlier, only now it sounded

louder, more insistent. The tone was cold and unyielding.

“Who is this?” Kiera demanded, gripping her rifle tighter. “Show yourself!”

For a moment, there was silence, then a deep mechanical hum resonated from

the depths of the Martian soil. Kiera’s helmet displayed seismic readings—an

underground structure, large and steadily approaching them.

“It’s coming from below,” Jace said, his voice low with dread. “It’s not just a

weapon—it’s a whole damn facility.”

“That’s not possible,” Kiera muttered under her breath. “Mars has been

explored. There are no signs of any infrastructure that advanced.”

But the seismic readings didn’t lie. The ground beneath their feet was shifting,

as if some massive structure, dormant for centuries, was now awakening

“Captain,” Khan’s voice came through her comms, urgent and terse. “We’ve

got incoming reinforcements. Rebels are mobilizing—they’re trying to break

through to the core.”

Kiera clenched her jaw. “We don’t have much time. Jace, you’re with me. We’re

going to find out what’s happening down there. Khan, Mira, hold them off.”

She didn’t wait for a response. With Jace at her side, she sprinted toward the

epicenter of the disturbance, where the humming was now deafening. The

closer they got to the center of the base, the more unstable the ground seemed

to become. It wasn’t just the weapon threatening to explode—it was everything

around them, the very fabric of Mars itself, as if some ancient force was

awakening.

“We’re too close!” Jace shouted as the vibrations intensified. The ground

cracked beneath their feet, and the sky above seemed to flicker with unnatural

light.

They reached the ruins of an old Martian mining facility, hidden beneath a

mountain of debris. The walls had been torn apart, exposing the heart of the

structure. There, deep below the surface, they could see it—an enormous

metallic object, shaped like a massive, twisted core. It pulsed with energy,

each beat sending a shockwave through the ground.

“The Guardians are here,” the voice boomed again, louder now, as if the

structure itself were speaking. “And they are not here to protect you.”

Kiera’s breath caught in her throat as she stepped closer to the structure. The

entire facility was alive, connected to the weapon in ways that defied

explanation. And in the center of it all stood a massive door, slowly opening,

revealing something unimaginable.

A giant, humanoid figure emerged from the shadows—a being of metal and

organic material, its form both alien and familiar. Its glowing eyes fixed on

Kiera and Jace.

“The Guardians,” Kiera whispered, her voice trembling for the first time.

The figure’s mechanical voice echoed through the vast chamber. “You have

trespassed on sacred ground. You are not welcome.”

Kiera raised her rifle, but Jace placed a hand on her arm, his eyes wide with

diyllnd beneath their feet began to crack open, as if the very planet itself was

ready to swallow them whole.

“We need to go. Now!” Kiera shouted, but before they could react, a blinding

light engulfed the entire room.
