What Alexander just said was more shocking to Blessing and Mary than him declaring his aspiration to take care of Blessing’s academic future.

Because he had already told both women—Mary directly and Blessing by eavesdropping on the conversation— they had known about him giving Blessing a monthly allowance to continue her stay in college.

Their interpretation, however, was that he was just going to give an amount under his discretion and they would have no choice but to happily accept it, no matter what it is.

In their heads, Alexander was going to take into account how much he was already spending on tuition fees and rent then he was going to give an amount that would only allow Blessing to have the bare minimum experience in college.

If she needed five hundred dollars to eat and move around for the entire month then that was going to give. At least that’s what they thought.
