Chapter 8

"No, mom. I'm not going to divorce Feran," Laura stated firmly as the driver halted in their house and they got out of the car.

"I thought you were going to consider it. I thought you hate him too," Mitchel said, walking over to her daughter.

"No, I don’t hate him, just…" Laura said. Though her marriage isn't a bed filled with roses, she'd never thought of opting for a divorce.

"Listen to me, Laura, you…"

"Please mom. Don't try to convince me," Laura said and went into the house, Mitchel following behind.

"Welcome, my dears," Laura and her mother were stunned to hear her dad, Frank's voice.

He was seated in the living room, smiling at them when they walked in.

"You look pissed off. What's wrong?"

"Everything. Everything is wrong, Frank," Mitchel stated, stamping her foot on the tiled floor.

"The big problem now is that Laura is unyielding to divorce your worthless piece of trash of a husband, Feran."Mitchel thundered, startling her husband.

"I'm not talking much about this. Excuse me" Laura said and headed for her room.

"Can you believe her, Frank. I advised her to divorce Feran. And she’s upset with me, hm?" Mitchel asked.

Frank shook his head. The thing was that he had always been a little bit afraid of his wife and sometimes he just had to agree with her to have a peace of mind. But he still attempted to reason the issue with her.

"Mitchel, but you know that it was my dad's dying wish. To keep Laura married to Feran. We need to honour that."

"Oh my goodness!" Mitchel cried with a shrill voice as she slumped on the floor and was literally rolling on the floor.

"It's your fault, Frank. You too are so useless. Our first daughter was given off in marriage to such a dreadful man and now we're looked down on by everyone including our relatives."

Frank felt angry and guilty at the same time. He knew his wife had a point but it wasn't up to him to just let their daughter get a divorce, thus, he tried to convince her to forget about the divorcing issue.

"Mitchel, Laura can't divorce Feran. It would be a shameful thing. Remember, we are already a laughing stock in other well known families eyes now. We shouldn't worsen our predicament."

"I doubt. Besides, your mom might likely want Laura to divorce Feran too. I can't have my daughter spend the rest of her life with scumbag," Mitchel said, getting up to her feet.

"You're right. Feran is utterly useless, but Laura divorcing him won't be all great. We promise my dad after all…"

Feran has come back home and has been standing on the doorstep for a while, listening to all his mother-in-law and father-in-law arguing.

He was about to enter the house when he heard Laura rushing out from her room to the living room and announced.

"Mom, dad, end this discussion. I will not be divorcing Feran."

"And why is that?" Mitchel asked. "Are you just bent on living miserably for the rest of your life, married to Feran or you naturally enjoy your predicament?"

"None of the above, mom. I gave my word to grandfather before he passed away that I won't ever leave Feran. And moreover, Feran has never complained about how we treated him all these years. And he has always been good to me."

"And what has his goodness done for you?" Mitchel asked, making Laura sigh.

"Answer me, Laura. Has it fed you the last few years or has it ameliorated your life?"

"Mom…"

"Your life has been deduced to nothing. I lost my place in the family thanks to your worthless husband. And he's been living off our earnings, plus yours. Aren't you fed up with it all?"

"Mom, please spare me the talk. I'm not divorcing Feran. I've said it and it's final," Laura said.

"Speak some sense into our daughter for it seems like she's befuddled," Mitchel said to her husband, Frank.

"You should save yourself the stress, dad. I'm not heeding to mom's wish," Laura said and headed to the door.

When she reached the door, it was pushed open by Feran and he faced her.

"Feran," Laura called and glanced back at her parents staring at her in awe.

"You asked me earlier today if I wanted you to change, right?"

"Hm." Feran nodded.

"Good. Here's my honest answer to that question.I may be mad to actually believe you can change. But I’m done with all these…If it’s possible, I'd like you to change. I no longer want to be humiliated and looked down on by other people, especially my family. I want those who laughed at me to regret what they have done."

"They would. I promise," Feran said with a firm voice. He spun and left the house with Laura staring behind his back.
