SAVING ANOTHER LIFE!

“ Why would I do that? You aren't even worth it,” Nathan chuckled, but Slade could tell that he was damn nervous.

However, others couldn't see what he saw.

“ Why would I want you out of your father's medical center when you're nothing but an errand doctor?” Nathan mocked, and the guests burst into laughter.

Sophia's cheeks flushed with embarrassment, so did her family's.

Her mother was already seething with anger.

“ Enough!” Granny Victoria raised her hand, and the argument stopped immediately.

She exuded an aura of power.

“ You!” She pointed at Slade. “ Go join the maids and do all the dishes the guests used."

Nathan and Mulan smiled, but Slade's next words shocked them to their core.

“ Grandma, why should I do the dishes when there are enough maids and butlers to do them?”

Everyone gasped and held their breath, waiting for Granny Victoria's response.

She was also shocked, her eyes widening and her mouth parting.

“ Did...did you just go against Grandma's words?” Nathan stuttered in shock.

Sophia, standing nearby, couldn't help but pray to any deity she worshiped to help her escape the problem Slade was causing.

She wished the ground would swallow her whole, as the embarrassment was unbearable.

“ I didn't go against her words; I'm just stating the fact. I rushed to her birthday party after finishing a surgery,” Slade said, pointing at the gift in Sophia's hand. “ I haven't rested for a minute, rushing over with the gift, but instead, I'm told to go wash the dishes?”

Everyone was shocked by Slade's outspokenness.

They all knew him as the useless son-in-law of the Collins family, who had never opposed Granny Victoria or any other family member.

The fact that he was doing so at the party left them stunned.

Some even fainted.

“ What makes you think you're so important that I'll treat you specially?” Granny Victoria's face scrunched into a scowl. “ You're not even the heir to your father's inheritance!”

Slade grinned at her words.

“ Did you get me married to Sophia because of my father's inheritance, Grandma?”

Slade cornered the old woman, leaving her too stunned to speak.

“.You!” She stretched out her walking stick.

“ Leave my party! I don't want to see you or any member of your family here!”

“ Mother!” Quincy and her husband, Donald, called out in unison.

“ Yes! I don't want any of you at my party! Kick them all out!”

Granny Victoria yelled, and four guards rushed in, grabbing Sophia and her family like trash.

They were thrown out of the party, while Slade walked out on his own, refusing to let the guards touch him.

Upon exiting, Quincy shot him a deadly glare.

“ Bastard! piece of trash! Because of your stupid pride, we've lost a chance to win over Mother's favor!” Donald yelled, his voice cracking through the air like a whip.

“ I wonder why Grandma would get me married to such a dump, useless person!”

Sophia gritted her teeth, her eyes filled with contempt.

“ Was it a bad idea to speak up?” Slade asked. “ I couldn't stand how I was being treated.”

“ You should have endured it! You've been enduring it for the past two years, so why the sudden change?” Anger swelled within Sophia.

A dry laugh escaped Slade's throat at Sophia's words.

“ Why did I expect so much from you all?” Slade's deep voice rumbled through his chest. “ I was never treated right since you all found out that I have two stepbrothers and I didn't stand a chance to take over my father's inheritance.”

Quincy rolled her eyes.

“ Now that you know we don't want you in this family, how about you divorce Sophia?”

“ Mother!” Sophia called, her eyes wide with alarm.

“ What? He's useless and doesn't have an inheritance to fall back on. We're fighting a losing game, so to get back on track, we should eliminate him from our family first.”

“ I'm tired. I'll head home now,” Slade said, balling his fists and walking away.

Upon getting to the house, he went straight to his room.

Since he got married to Sophia two years ago, they had never held hands, let alone slept in the same room.

His room resembled that of a maid's; even a maid's room was more organized than his.

His mother-in-law, Quincy, made sure all used items were kept in his room, and he had no right to complain or stand up against her.

As he pushed open the door to his room, the stench that wafted out was overwhelming.

He shook his head at the life he once lived – a life where he had no say in any family matters, a life where he had never held hands with his wife, let alone slept with her.

Slade was never proud of his past life, and he immediately set his heart on changing everything in this new life.

He closed the door to his room, took off his clothes, and went to take a cool shower.

As the water cascaded down his head and body, his mind was clouded with different thoughts.

After taking his bath, he put on casual clothes and fell onto his bed, his eyes fixed on the ceiling.

His hand absentmindedly touched the golden necklace.

" Why did you give me this necklace, Mother?" he muttered. " Did you already know something like this would happen to me?"

He was still thinking about it when he drifted off to sleep.

....

Slade woke up the next morning and prepared to go to work.

Upon getting downstairs, he met Quincy seated on a sofa with her morning tea and fashion newspaper in hand.

" Good morning, Mother." Slade said, but he was totally ignored, as if he didn't exist.

" What's good about this morning, peasant?" Quincy hissed, just as he was about to leave. " Why haven't you swept and mopped the whole house? Don't you know it's already dusty?"

" I'm sorry, Mother, but I won't be able to do that. I have a surgery to perform this morning, and the patient is a prominent personality."

Quincy burst into laughter at Slade's words, her lips twisted in mockery. " Do I look dumb to you that you could lie to me? Prominent personality, my foot!" She scowled. " You're nothing but an errand doctor."

" Believe whatever you want, Mother. I can't be late." Slade said and walked away.

" Come back here, scumbag!" Quincy continued yelling, almost bringing down the roof of the house, but Slade didn't return.

On his way to the medical center, a cab got into an accident, and both the driver and passenger almost lost their lives.

The cab somersaulted, and the victims were badly injured.

" Stop the cab!" Slade said to the cab driver taking him to work.

The cab driver frowned. " Why?"

“ Can't you see there's been an accident?"

Slade replied and got out of the car, running towards the scene of the accident.

It was a hit-and-run case, and the other car had already fled.

Passersby stood by the pedestrian side of the road, taking pictures and videos while watching the driver and passenger struggle to live.

Slade got the two out of the car with the help of another passerby.

He checked their pulse and exhaled once he confirmed they were not dead.

" Someone call the ambulance!" He shouted, and a passerby immediately dialed the ambulance line.

The victims were losing a lot of blood.

Slade tore his shirt without hesitation, using it to cover the bleeding stomach of one of the victims.

" Are you a doctor?" the passerby who assisted him asked.

" Yes, I am." Slade replied.

He thought of what to do to save the victims when a vision flashed through his eyes – like a video only he could see.

Without hesitation, he tore the remaining part of his shirt and tied it around the injured areas on the victims' bodies.

He then proceeded to give the victims Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Within minutes of CPR, the two victims' breathing became steady, and their slow pulse returned to normal.

Almost immediately, the blaring of the ambulance could be heard, and the victims were taken to the hospital to get their wounds treated.

Slade smiled as he walked back into the cab taking him to work.

Once again, he had saved another life with the help of his golden necklace.
