Chapter 3: In the Abyss of Nothingness

It felt like I was falling into a deep abyss, with nothingness around me. There wasn't even a speck of light or whiff of a breeze that would touch my skin. Everything around me felt really cold. I couldn't feel my arms or legs, as my whole body felt numb.

I opened my eyes to stare into the vast darkness. As far as my eye would go, there was nothing but darkness. I couldn't even look at what's in front of me. All I could sense in the moment was the soft sound of my breathing.

Though everything around me was rather creepy, I didn't feel scared at all. Instead, I was feeling strangely calm, albeit I had no idea of what was going on. There were several questions running wild in my head.

Who am I?

What was my name?

Where was I?

But all of them meant nothing in the face of the vast stretch of dark serenity in front of my eyes. Those questions all felt meaningless, or rather the words that I couldn't even utter out of my mouth seemed to be weightless.

What was I even doing?

Even though I knew that those questions meant nothing, neither asking them to myself was going to make me arrive at a solid conclusion. I couldn't help but think about it.

Humans were quite curious creatures by nature. They are more prone to do something that is not supposed to be done. Babies do things even after being taught not to. There was nothing strange about it.

After all at a young age, people are more curious and their curiosity gets the better of them. I was not any different from them after all, even if it was a little, there was a glimpse of my human self in me.

Even though I had no heart to feel human emotions, nor I could understand them. I was nothing but an empty vessel who was created to obey others. I was no one. I had no existence.

It's like being a chair in someone's house that one might use for their needs and would look after for the time being, but as soon as they get a better chair, they would think twice about the disposal of this piece of shit.

But since the human brain was a wonder of creation, I had a question for quite some time. Even when I was in that room surrounded by dark metallic walls, being beaten mercilessly or when I was being tortured to death, this question has never left my mind.

Even till the last moment, I was in that room, as the final words of that boy whispered in my ear, this question never left my mind.

What was our purpose in this world?

What was my purpose in this world?

This world was big enough that the mere existence of a few people won't really mean anything to it. People die, and new people are born. That's just how nature works. It moves on, waiting for no one.

I couldn't find any reason to keep a person like me alive.

I was just alive, somehow, existing in this accursed world. Neither having a heart nor the grace of nature. I was an anomaly in the face of existence. Fighting against the laws of nature for existing.

The more I thought about it, the more hollow I felt from inside. I was also slowly sinking into the darkness but I didn't want to do anything at that moment to save myself. Everything felt pointless.

A creature like that wouldn't make much of a difference either way, regardless of whether I was alive or not. After all these years of confinement, I just wanted to feel what freedom felt like, but fate again proved that these were luxuries of the world that were meant to be felt by humans.

Suddenly a glimmer of light illuminated bright on what I could only describe as the horizon. Being in that dark place for so long, and finally seeing a glimmer of light made me curious to move towards it.

As I was moving towards it, it felt like I wasn't actually moving but was staying still in the position I started. And the light was again getting dimmer with every passing second. There was a slight hope in my mind, but it was slipping away.

I could never reach for it no matter what I did. But suddenly a soft voice resonated in my ear. It was a strange voice that I haven't heard before, but somehow the voice sounded rather harmless.

In that dark empty place, somehow that soft voice felt really warm. There was a strange touch of warmth to it that I could feel for some reason. It was a rather unknown predicament for me, so I couldn't make sense of anything.

As the voice kept getting warmer, I could slightly make out the words that the voice was saying and it felt like they were talking to me.
