In a bustling street in the markets of Nextar city
Business people called out their wares, and the bustling crowds moved around. The dirty gutters packed full of waste gave out a rancid smell."Furrnown! Furrrnown!!!"The bus drivers shouted to the passing crowds while huge droplets of sweat fell from their bodies.Cold water hawkers moved with great dexterity around the moving cars as they hawked their wares. To the inexperienced eye, they were dancing on the thin line between life and death. In that same street, a statue of an ancient warrior looked at the heavens arrogantly and his sword pointed threateningly at the earth, not minding the caked droppings that birds accumulated throughout the years on his face.At the feet of the statue stood a black-haired man with pale skin who wore a slightly rumpled but clean suit. His attire made him look totally out of place with the environment. His face had a deep look of despondence and his eyes looked worn out.Derrick looked on quietly as the people of Nextar City went about their daily lives, not minding anyone around them, except their prospective customers. The customers themselves only had eyes for the goods they wished to procure.Everyone moved on with life and concerned themselves with only their own business. Everyone passing by had their bottled-up sorrows and swallowed-up problems. Some people try to forget their problems with alcohol, some of them turn to cigarettes, and some of them like Derrick's own mother try to forget their worries by busying themselves with every single piece of work around them. Both the necessary and unnecessary. When times were still normal, he was just like them. Those days, he tried to forget his problems and worries by drowning in bottles of beer.Everyone tries to use things to distract themselves from their problems. They know it's there but they just want to disregard it, and maybe if it was ignored for a long time, it may go away someday. But deep within, everyone knew it never worked like that. No matter how much they numb themselves to the issues in their lives, they just stay stuck to them. Until they eventually do something about those issues.Derrick knew his issues wouldn't get numb. Not this time anyway. Even five packs of beer wouldn't do. The issues remained fresh like a new wound that gets pried open constantly even when it shows no sign of healing. And it festered in his soul, slowly eating him up until only a husk remained. It wouldn't go away. Not this time.Derrick took a look at the streets of Nextar City again and shook his head. After which he trudged to the nearest bus park. "Nextar to Burnim! Nextar to Burnim!". The cab driver called."One seat ". Derrick said to him."Get in."He waited for the cab to get filled with people, but he noticed the cab driver was a little greedy because he kept taking in passengers until it seemed like a sardine inside his cab. There was hardly any space in the cab and the air inside had a smell of sweat.Derrick did not mind. He was already used to this kind of life anyway. He endured the long ride to Burnim while ignoring the many discomforts of the ride. After some hours, he arrived at his destination and got out of the cab. He then picked up another cab and gave the driver directions to his mother's house. When the cab arrived at the gate of her house, he got off and paid the driver.Derrick looked at the sign that was on a wooden stake in front of the house and sighed. It read;------- [BEWARE OF TRESPASSING!] [THIS IS THE PROPERTY] OF [THE GOVERNMENT ]……….Derrick waited until the cab had driven away, then he scaled the fence and broke into his mother's house. He entered the living room and started looking around. When he saw all the familiar objects in the room, suppressed memories bubbled up.Memories of all the good times he and his family had in this very house, all the lovely memories of the holidays spent here.He saw the window his son Jake had cracked when he played football with his cousins. He saw the awkward decorations his mother had forced him to put around the house. The angel on the Christmas tree the full family made piece by piece. It was very ugly though. The festive decorations showed the excitement for a holiday they never got to celebrate.A small line of tears started pouring from his eyes and he crumbled to the floor like a broken doll.He remained that way for almost three hours. He stayed silent on the ground as tears flowed involuntarily from his eyes. As Derrick's emotions rose like a rising tide, a strange feeling washed over him.No.It was not a strange feeling. It was a very familiar feeling he had been trying to avoid for the past few days.He had been suppressing it for a while now but he just could not continue. He could feel that strong resolution on a decision that he knew was horrible. But his emotions kept rising until his mind became set and determined on that decision. He stood up with a little difficulty and picked up a small notebook from the bookshelf. He tore a page from the book and started writing on it.[TO MY FAMILY WHEREVER YOU ARE (SONIA, MOTHER, DARREN, ISABELLA, JAKE, DAVIS, ANNA, JOHN, DANIEL, VICTOR, GREGORY, AND JACQUES)][ I WANT TO HOLD ON, LIVE ON, FIGHT ON, SURVIVE FOR YOU ALL.][I WANT TO LIVE THIS LIFE AS IT IS HOLDING MEMORIES OF YOU.][I KNOW WHAT I SHOULD DO, BUT I'M SORRY. I'VE ALREADY LOST TO THIS LIFE, AND I'VE ALREADY LOST IN THIS LIFE.][I KNOW I CAN'T STAY IN THIS LIFE ALONE ANYMORE.I AM COMING TO MEET YOU ALL][PLEASE WELCOME ME.]He tore another page and wrote.[TO SONIA MY WIFE ] [I KNOW YOU LOVED MY POEMS, SO I WILL WRITE A LAST ONE FOR YOU FORGIVE ME THOUGH IF IT IS HORRIBLE, I AM HELD UP BY GRIEF. EVEN THOUGH YOU MIGHT NOT GET TO READ IT, YOU KNOW MY HEART.]...................................... I'M COMING TO SEE YOU Please hear me now my thoughts, And add it not to my faults, Even if I hear not your thoughts, "I'm coming to see you soon". So, I thought. Though in darkness, you might lay, "Or surrounded by lights". I should say. Meeting you I will anyway. "Welcome ". From you, I pray. Should myself I find in hell, From heaven scorn me not in hell. For like the admiration for you when I fell, To heaven shall I look to you from hell. Welcome me please my wife, For I'm coming to see you if not in this life................................................He stood from the floor and took the notes he had just written on.He left the house and took a walk to the nearby cemetery where his family had been buried. When he arrived at the gates, he hesitated for a moment, but a determined glint flashed in his eyes and he entered. His family's graves were at the northwest of the cemetery, so he had to walk for some time before he got there. He looked at the twelve gravestones and his head hung in dejection. He burned the first note he had written and scattered its ashes on their graves, after which he went to his wife's grave. As he got closer, his heart started tightening. He knew if he completed his actions, it would be final. No going back for him. When he got to the front of her grave, he chuckled sadly and knelt at the flowers near her gravestone. He took out the remaining note and set it ablaze.***On the main bridge, NextarIt was a hot sunny day on the noisy bridge of NextarVehicles honked at each other and the drivers strained their voices while they hurled insults at themselves. The cars and the buses moved like tortoises in the never-ending trafficThe bright sun gazed down in anger as if determined to burn off the sinful mortals from the earth.Molly looked at the dwindling bottles of cold water in the basket that she used to hawk. She recalled the sad times when her bowl would be filled to the brim with bottles of cold water, and she concluded that today was a good day."Sales were good today". She thought excitedly."Give me one bottle". A cold voice called. She looked up and saw it was a dark-haired man in a clean and well-ironed black suit. She handed him a bottle and the man paid her.She watched him as he walked along the railings of the bridge. He was well dressed and good looking so he caught her attention. He walked along the railings and stopped at a point to look with interest at the murky waters. When Molly thought he would get bored with looking at the waters and get on his way, he suddenly with a swift movement climbed upon the railings."What the f**k! Hey!!! Get down! Psycho! What do you think you are doing? Get down!!!".She screamed as she ran at full speed to his location, her basket of cold water falling to the dusty floor. She ran screaming with her arms outstretched, but she was too far away to reach him.In those short moments, the man turned to look at her and smiled sadly before he let himself fall.Molly saw him dropping off the bridge and when she reached there her chest heaved and drops of tears flowed from her eyes.By now the impatient drivers had noticed the commotion and they had started gathering. Molly looked down at the waters, but the man was long gone.In an unknown realmA gigantic mountain stood in the air, free from the bounds of the ground. It floated above a vast expanse of land and numerous kingdoms and empires lay underneath it. Snow white clouds surrounded the mountain and a transcendent aura emanated from it. Outside the mountain, a flock of huge white birds rode the snowy clouds and a majestic plumage of blue feathers was on their necks. Their inky black beaks and legs made a contrasting difference with the white clouds and they raised their necks proudly as they flew with an unmistakable air of majesty.Inside the mountain, people flew in and out of the mountain unfettered to the earth. They shuttled from one location to another, dressed in glamorous robes of colors that made them look ethereal and indifferent.A tall palace stood right at the summit of the mountain and coloured gems and glittering metals adorned it.An immortal palace! In the uppermost room of the palace that overlooked the mountain stood an elega
In a vast wilderness void of living things, a dark gaping shaft with an endless void cut across a large distance. Its edges were jagged like the open maw of an ancient prehistoric beast ready to chomp down on anything or anyone that dared fall through.A bald Monk donning black robes floated cross-legged in the air beside the shaft. His face was carefree and he looked just like a depicted picture. His bald head reflected the hazy light that surrounded him.His posture had a detached feeling and only the long fingers counting beads on a long chain affirmed that he was not a lifeless statue. A dark rift suddenly opened beside him and the Faction Master walked out of it.He stood beside the Monk but did not speak and only stared into the wilderness. The monk continued counting his beads and took no notice of his existence." Monk Agdol".A sound echoed in the empty wilderness, but the Faction Master's lips stayed shut as he looked into the distance.Monk Agdol stopped counting his b
Derrick turned and looked at the water seller. She was running towards him frantically and she seemed to be shouting something. Her hands were outstretched and her face showed alarm.Derrick plastered a smile on his face to reassure her.She should not worry that much. He was going to a better place. But he knew it was useless. Instead of reassurance, he was sure he had just given a sad smile.Sigh! He steeled his heart one last time and gave up control of his legs. The murky waters of the ocean rushed towards him and a thought flashed in his mind." I'm coming now, Sonia".His body hit the raging waters and an excruciating pain rose from the drag of the rioting waters. The air in his lungs abandoned him and darkness took him into its embrace.***In an unknown location..........Silent...... The whole place was silent. No trace of light could be seen and darkness covered everywhere. It was a dark void and nothing existed in it.There was no sign of living beings and a grey winding su
Eugene's face was solemn." So it seems your death was faked? "David scoffed ' Of course junior brother, do I look dead?"."You don't look pleased to see me". He said."You should be happy I'm alive, after all, I'm still your senior brother"."Do you loathe me that much?"Eugene looked at him in disgust "Why can't you just let the dead be?". He asked." He's already dead. Just let him rest in peace"." You guys mistreated him enough when he was alive"."Or you want his talent?".Eugene smiled lightly and shook his head. " No. It can't be you"."You love yourself too much to take that risk"." Why, I was even doubtful that you would enter a dangerous realm all in the name of breaking through"." Coming to think of it, there were a lot of holes in the story of your death". "I guess you're using that fool Fabil, as your lab rat'.Davi had been watching Eugene in amusement, but when he heard the last part his face stiffened. " Stop all this nonsense! Let's get to the main point"." G
"Senior brother, we're close". the white-robed boy said." En". Fredrick replied. He did not divert his attention as he stayed focused on maintaining the hand seals over the body in the casket. They were still flying over the Reincarnation River and they had reached a point where a long line of blue spots sped along the river. Before long, plenty of boats identical to theirs appeared in the distance.A tall man in grey robes stood on a more intrinsically designed boat that stood foremost in the group. He turned his head and looked in Frederick's direction." What took you so long? And where is supreme master Davi?". His voice resounded. The people on the other boats all wearing black looked on silently.Fredrick remained silent and continued maintaining the hand seals over the iridescent body. The other boy on the boat looked back and forth between both of them. When he saw Frederick had no intentions of replying he stuttered."Sect master well...... We, we......."."Enough!". The gr
"Roar!!!"A loud guttural sound came ou from the body's throat.Slowly turning it looked at Eugene and his comrades. And Immediately after seeing them extreme anger showed in its red eyes and it let out a louder roar."ROAR!!!" The sound brought reverberations that spread out from it and disturbed the river.A stifling pressure descended on all the experts and they felt their chest become heavy instantly." What's happening?" Efel turned urgently to Eugene and asked. " Kores is not this strong. Why is he so strong?". He shouted in alarm.Eugene who was also feeling the hands of fear slowly reaching into his heart, shook his head. " I don't know what happened. I also do not understand why he is so strong".He watched the corpse of Kores that was still roaring madly within the runes, and then suddenly his mind jolted. " The stone!"He could see the Universe Origin stone which was attached to the corpse's chest continuously send pulsing energy to it. "So that's why he has so much
A few minutes ago...Derrick floated on the sea listless. His eyes were blank and devoid of reason as he floated there like a dead body. The water rose and fell and carried Derrick along with its movements. Small waves clashed and a drop of water splashed on his face. His eyes slowly regained clarity.Right now he could no longer remember anything. He looked up at the sky and wondered what it was. He watched the swaying sea and was perplexed at it. He could no longer remember who he was.He closed his eyes and continued moving with the water. Why think so much?Wasn't it just better to stay like this forever?BAM! His eyelids shot open. His eyes became red and fat drops of tears started rolling down his face. Derrick could not remember anything, but he knew he shouldn't be here. Something bad was happening and if he let it continue he would forever lose something dear to him.He racked his brain but it was useless. His mind was blank! He could vaguely feel that he was forgetting
"Hey!"."Hey! Wake up!""Wake up! Dammit!".A sharp kick landed on Derrick's waist and forced his eyes open. The bright sun shone on his face and he squinted. He took a look at his assailant. It was a woman, short and rounded with a cute face, her hair was plaited backward and she wore an apron around a tight-fitted gown. Her nostrils widened in anger and her eyes had a slight look of disgust as she glared at him. She held a long broom and pointed it towards him while shaking it as if to chase him away.Derrick took an unsteady step and stood up.He looked around him.He was under a small caravan and around it were others like it. Small tables were scattered everywhere beside these caravans. This was a market." It seems I slept in this lady's store". He thought.Derrick understood why she wanted him to leave, but he did not get why there was a trace of disgust in her tone as she spoke. He then took a look at his clothes."Oh, that's why". He still wore his torn and dirty clothes fr
Very early the next day, Derrick climbed up the stairs of the library with bright eyes. He had been dreaming of the library throughout the whole night. He could not wait to read all the books there. The guards were the same ones as the day before and they only glanced at Derrick perfunctorily as he passed through the doors of the library. The expected scene of towering shelves filled with ancient books and a mystical air was not what greeted Derrick as he entered. Instead, there was a small plain room with a high desk at the end. At the sides of the desk were two doors. One was closed while the other revealed a spiral staircase leading upwards. A middle-aged man sat at the desk. His face was sallow and he had a pale complexion. His ragged brown hair hid behind his high crown which made him look like he was balding. The man looked at Derrick drowsily and asked in a tired voice." What level are you?"" First Stage apprentice".The man dragged his right hand across the desk so it was p
Outside the fighting hall. The two men had already walked some meters away when Jason turned to Derrick. An apologetic look on his face." Uhm, about what just happened. I'm sorry I got you involved. If I knew he was still in there I would not have brought you here". Derrick continued walking forward without answering and Jason eventually followed. After some minutes of silent walking, Derrick looked at the young boy at his side whose bored expression made it really hard to know his true emotions. " Did you challenge him or did he challenge you?". Derrick asked suddenly."Huh?". Jason was startled. " Oh, right. He challenged me. Until this morning I was higher than him in the rankings. Since he learned a spear art he has been moving upwards steadily. The guy you saw him defeat was just above me".Derrick raised his eyebrows slightly, " What spear art?"." I was going to tell you about that later. It's a martial technique. You can find martial techniques in the library. There's a se
Jason looked at the state of Derrick's belongings, shook his head, and sighed. He closed the door behind himself and walked to his corner." Wait for me. I'll be out in a minute". He told Derrick as he entered the bathroom.Derrick furrowed his brows " Why should I wait for you?". He asked loudly." Just wait. There are some things you need to know". Jason's voice called out from the bathroom.Derrick was a little puzzled by Jason's request, but he waited anyway. He was unfamiliar with this place and would appreciate any new information. After some minutes, Jason came out of the bathroom with white steam rising from his body. He picked up some new clothes and wore them before turning to Derrick." You just arrived at the academy and you don't know much, but it's a rule for the roommate of the newcomer or the nearest person around to show them how things are run in the academy". " But, a guide already showed me around when I arrived". Derrick pointed out.Jason dismissively waved his
Derrick picked up the manual Edgar had given him. The man had emphasized it so much that it would be a little foolish not to read it.And Derrick needed to know what was going to happen from here. Edgar did not behave like a guide at all and just left him with vague guidance. Derrick himself was too lazy to ask the man anything. Since there was a handy book here that did not require him to associate with anybody, why not?He started reading the manual. Its content was pretty easy to understand. Derrick had just found out that this organization was called the Martial Arts Training Academy. Not headquarters. He had Harrison and the president to blame for that. The first few lines consisted of the rules of the academy which were, to be honest, a little too few. The rules were just saying; that you can have all the freedom you want. Just don't cause any trouble outside the academy or you'll face the consequences yourself while the academy looks on with arms folded. The rules also sa
" Hahaha! Starlight City baby!". Derrick carried his backpack out of the airport's gate and greedily inhaled the fresh airFinally, he was out of Burrin. It was so refreshing. "Phoo! This place is chilly!". Derrick rubbed his shoulders as he shivered. He wore skimpy clothes while traveling. It was not that he did not know that Starlight City had by far a lower degree than Burrin. He knew perfectly well, but Derrick had presumed that since he had become a martial artist he could be immune from the cold. Now it seemed like he was a little naive in his thinking. His body was only stronger than a normal person's own, and he could endure harsh weather better. But that did not mean that he was immune to cold. However, it was not a problem. He just had to circulate a bit of energy and he could get rid of the cold.He circulated his internal energy to get rid of the cold before activating his meditation state while praying strongly that the spiritual energy in Starlight City was not scar
In the parking lot of the Martial Arts Trainee Center...The president of the martial arts training center stood outside in the front park with Harrison. It was around ten am in the morning and their faces looked a little unpleasant, they had been standing there for a long time while waiting for Derrick. Till now there was no sign of him." That Derrick is really strange, isn't he? For two weeks he has not smelt this place, even though we left full use of the Dixt tree for him. What's more, is that he even has the nerve to keep us waiting for two hours!. Harrison, did you not text him yesterday to remind him of the time?". The president complained bitterly." I did text him yesterday. He told me he would be here. And If I remember correctly, I think he said that the energy around the Dixt tree was exhausted. What's this about letting him have full access to it? Maybe I heard wrongly." Harrison replied as he looked at the president with a strange gaze." Cough... Cough... Nevermind t
Derrick sat crosslegged in the crack and watched as his internal energy rapidly filed up. With the amount of spiritual energy outside and the speed with which he was absorbing them, he had almost reached the peak of the martial apprentice third stage. Before long his internal energy reached the limit and he could not absorb any more spiritual energy. He then paused to observe the state of the spiritual energy outside. Though he had absorbed a lot of spiritual energy it hardly affected the amount outside, because he noticed that as soon as he absorbed the spiritual energy the spiritual stone mine would disperse some more to fill that up. " That's just great! I can continue to break through without any worries".He directed his senses to his internal energy,"Condense".As in his other breakthroughs, the internal energy in his body all gathered up into a small drop of liquid energy. This time the color changed from normal green to dark green.Immediately, that feeling of bloated stre
A tall man with dark hair jumped down from a large rock in the forest. His clothes were shredded with burn marks on them. This was Derrick. He had started looking for the leopard. He had searched for a while now, but he had not still found it. " Even with those injuries that shithead still managed to run so far. It sure is impressive". marveled at it's tenacity. He wondered what stage the leopard was. It looked like this spiritual mine had just opened because he had not yet found any animal like the leopard around. It seemed after it became strong, it chased away all other animals so it could monopolize the mine." That stingy shit!".Derrick had a great hatred for the leopard. In his two lifetimes, this was the closest he had come to death by another's hand. If not for his exaggerated healing prowess, he would be the midnight snack for that beast. The first time he had noticed healing was when he had those injuries from the sea storm. But it was not as fast as today's own. Duri
Starlight City, Martial Arts Academy.Edgar looked at the pile of files on his table and sighed. The number of geniuses was dwindling every year. He just finished registering almost a thousand new apprentices and there were only five individuals that caught his attention. The age-long war against the mutated animals was still in full motion without any signs of stopping. The mutated animals had been growing stronger with each year, and experts arose every day from there. But the humans have been declining in quality. Hardly any genius to be seen year in year out.Knock! The sound of a knock jolted him from his ruminations." Come in".The door opened and a tall woman entered. She wore a white body-hugging suit which made her figure prominent. Her black hair was packed in a bun, and her face had only a slight touch of makeup. She had an air of seriousness and her face was stiff. She carried a white file which she dropped on Edgar's table. " We just received this from the application
