Sleep, a welcome respite, had finally claimed me when a soft rapping on my bedroom door shattered the tranquillity. Disoriented, I fumbled for the lamp on my nightstand, blinking away blurry remnants of dreams.

"Ben?"

The voice, a husky whisper, sent a jolt of recognition through me.

"Maya?" I mumbled, my voice thick with sleep. "What's wrong?"

"Can I come in?" she asked, her voice laced with a shy hesitancy that sent shivers down my spine.

Sitting up in bed, I brushed a hand through my sleep-tousled hair and cleared my throat. "Yeah, of course. Come in."

The door creaked open, revealing Maya bathed in the soft glow of the hallway light. She looked hesitant, her usual playful demeanour replaced by a nervous flutter in her eyes.

"What's on your mind?" I asked, gesturing for her to enter further.

She took a hesitant step forward, closing the door softly behind her. "I… I couldn't sleep," she admitted, her voice barely a whisper.
