Chapter Seventy Four

The next morning began like any other until a loud, insistent knock echoed through the house. Alex groaned, rubbing sleep from his eyes as he stumbled towards the door. Sarah sat up in bed, frowning in concern.

“Who could that be this early?” she wondered aloud.

“I’ll check,” Alex replied, pulling on a shirt as he made his way to the front door. He opened it to find a familiar, albeit unexpected face.

“Jason?” Alex's voice was a mix of shock and confusion. Standing on the doorstep was his older brother, Jason, whom he hadn’t seen in years.

“Hey, Alex,” Jason greeted, his voice strained. “Can I come in?”

Without waiting for a response, Jason stepped inside, carrying a worn duffel bag. The air between the brothers was thick with tension, the years of estrangement hanging over them.

“What are you doing here?” Alex asked, shutting the door behind him.
