Dear Diary,
The wendigo is gone, finally, and mom talked to the council about it. They were so proud of me. I have four days left...it's not getting any easier, with the sudden craving for blood, the sleepless nights, and not being able to focus on anything.
I got a text from Chase last night after the fight. He wants to hang out. Mom and the council mustn't find out, but I know he is a good guy. And I want to give him a chance.
The bell rang for the first period. I didn't get much sleep last night due to the sudden craving for blood. I saw Denise now. She was with Corner. What was she doing with him?
"Inez!" she called as I ran to meet her. "Geez, you look drained. Do you want to go see the school nurse?"
"No, I'm fine." I dragged her away from Corner's side. "What are you doing with him?" I whispered, trying not to let Corner hear us.
"Nothing...he just wants to borrow my note...and yes, we are late for the first period." She said and I looked behind her shoulder, but Corner was already gone. That was fast.
We both enter the classroom, and I saw Chase and smile at him. He smiled back. I walked to my seat and sat on the empty seat next to Corner. I could feel the aura again; danger... the dangerous type. His sunglasses were fixed on his face again. I didn't think everyone had seen that face without sunglasses covering it.
"So, guys. How excited are you?" The principal walked in during the period.
Everybody focused attention on her and murmured to themselves, wondering what was going on.
"We are having our first field trip this year. Don't you guys know about it?" she asked again. "Anyway, it's this Friday. It's going to be so much fun."
"Principal Elise."
"Yes, Jada."
"Are we going to camp? Like, is it an overnight sleepover?"
"It's not a sleepover, Jada, we are going to camp, obviously, and don't forget to bring your sunscreen, it's going to be hot." She smiled.
"Principal Elise."
"Yes, Maddie...go on."
"Should we bring our bikini?"
Everyone in the class started to laugh, especially the boys.
"Bring anything you want, my dear." She finally fixes her eyes on me and points at me. "Inez and Chase... meet me in my office now...so, get ready for a fun Friday." She said as she walked out of the class.
I stood up and looked at Chase, then we both walked out of the classroom.
~~~
"Take a seat." Principal Elise offered.
"Thanks, aunt," Chase said as we both sat.
"So, I saw your performance in class. They are improving, Chase, and I think we both know who is making you lose focus in class." She fixed her gaze on me.
"Me? What did I do?" I asked, clueless.
"Auntie, I know dad was here, but Inez wasn't the reason for my poor performance. I was just going through a hard time...the football match competition is coming this fall and I don't think I can cope, trying to combine my education with a sport, so Inez isn't at fault here. It's all me."
"I'm sorry Chase; I didn't know you were going through this," I said as he smiled at me.
"Inez, I'm glad you want to work on this friendship with me, and you are not at fault for anything that happens to me."
"And Inez, I noticed your performance too. You are coming along and I need you to study more. Maybe get yourself a tutor or something."
Chase looked at Principal Elise. "I can be her tutor aunt."
"No, Chase, we will find another for her. You just said that you can't cope with education and your games...so, I don't think you should tutor her."
I know I was the reason why his performance got low, but I didn't know he would lie to his aunt about that.
"I think I'm more comfortable with Chase teaching me," I said.
"Okay, since you both want to walk out... then you can. And you can go back to class now."
We both stood up and walked out of her office.
"So, now that the period is almost over, how about we skip this one to go have some fun?" Chase said as he held my hand. And yes, the chemistry happened.
"But Chase." I wanted to hesitate, but I like him too, and it kills me every time I don't see him, even though I don't show it.
"Hey, let me show you something."
"What is it?" I asked.
"You are going to like it. I promise...just come." He said as we both walked out of the school premises.
He pulled into a parking space; we step out of his beat-up green car, and I'm met with the smell of sea salt and the shrill cry of seagulls overhead. My eyes travelled to the large sign that states, in big, red, white, and blue peeling letters, I had arrived at The Bar and Grill.
A sailboat is painted in the left-hand corner, and wind chimed sway softly from an awning containing the same print that hangs over a white metal door with a circular window in it.
The paneling on the sides of the building wqas a bit dirty but added to the feeling that this restaurant was once a boathouse. I walked up wooden stairs to the door, strands of old and yellowed sustainably draped across the railings, and I smiled as he opened pedthe door and we step into the warm space.
Long windows let in weak sunlight that streamed in onto the gray carpeted floor. The walls were painted gray, while black metal light fixtured let soft light light up the room.
People chattered happily to each other at the small, square wooden table where the legs were wrapped with thick twine and the wooden chairs had blue leather seats. Along the back wall of the grill looking out on the harbor is a line of wide booths with the same blue leather upholstery and large wooden tables.
We passed a group of guys playing on bright yellow foosball stands in the corner behind them. A large wooden wheel that was used to steer ships was placed on the side of a white counter, and I stopped to take it all in. The place was cozy and just the right place to come to. I had a feeling I would be coming here more often.
"This is my favorite place. My uncle owns it."
"It's nice...let's go grab a seat," I said.
We finally took a seat next to the window when the waiter placed the menu in front of us. "You come here often?" I asked. "Yeah, I love coming here when I feel lonely and sad or if I want some alone time." He said as he drank from the cup of water he had ordered earlier. "So, what about you?" "What?" I asked, clueless. "Where do you go when you feel lonely? What cheers you up?" I looked around pointedly, as if my answer was obvious. "I don’t have one. I just go with the flow." I smiled warmly. "That’s weird but cool." He gave a light smile. "You think?" He laughed at me and tilted his head. "Actually, no, but... I guess you can come here anytime. This place has a great view, and especially at night, it’s more beautiful and colorful." "Really?" I asked as I stared out the window. "Yes." Chase said as he got to his feet. "Inez, I will be back in a minute." As Chase left, I looked down at my menu and read through the endless possibilities of fish and other assorted seafood. I w
"Come out you all... I can sense you in that darkness." I said as the tune in my voice changed. "Seriously, Inez, you let that boy drive you home?" Arden said as he shook his head. "Not now, family... not now." I shushed as I ran to my room. I placed my bag on the bed as I removed the supernatural book. ’Why did you light up earlier? Jada saw you do that, ’ I said, and the book opened itself. It stopped on a page, and I ran my hand through the writing. The Silas brothers were in town. I heaved a sigh. "Next time, don’t light up like that; you almost put my life in danger." The book flipped pages again and stopped. I ran my hand through it. Oh no, we have to see the council. I said as I left my room immediately and ran down the stairs. "Dad, I will need a ride to the Council region." "Now?" "Yes, it’s important!" "Let me get my keys. I will be back in a few." he said as he ran to his room. In a few minutes, he was back with weapons in his hand. We all looked at him. "In case we s
The thud of thunder was all I could hear as I rolled over in my bed, my pillow covering my ears. It was exactly 5:30am. The smell of the woods came through my open window, and I could also smell humans from a far distance. That doesn’t seem right, unless my fangs were out and that meant trouble. It was more painful this time, as if I had eaten myself up in my sleep. I looked over my bed and my off-white bed sheet was flooded with my own blood. That has never happened, and it was definitely not a dream. I looked in the mirror but I was not bruised, I looked completely normal but one thing was different. My eyes were red, and this was the first time it would bring that color out. It was strange. My mouth started to crave blood as I began to destroy objects in my room. It was as if I was becoming something, but I was trying so hard not to become that thing. The sound woke up my family, and in a few minutes, I heard someone knocking on my door. "Are you okay, sweetie?" Mom said, behind
The book started to glow again as it flipped pages. I couldn’t reach it since I was still tied up in a chair with chains. ’What is it again?’ I asked as it made a sound only I could understand. ’No, not another one of them. What do they want?’ ’Oh, of course, I’m the chosen one and they want my powers.’ The book started to float and dropped on my lap. "Can you get me out of here? Of course not. You are a book. What was I expecting?’ The book stopped glowing. ’Awwn, don’t be sad. I didn’t mean to be unkind, but I really need to get to Chase, so how can I get out of here?’ ’What? You don’t think I can control myself? I love Chase and I can’t hurt him, so I really need to see him one last time if I’m really going to die in two days’ time.’ ’You want me to feed? But bookie, I don’t want that and I don’t want to hurt anyone I love, and I still don’t know why I can’t remember what happened earlier. ’How about you show me?’ It flipped pages and I finally got to see what really happened ea
"Am I getting my personal guard?" I asked and he stood up and walked towards me. "No, she is your age and she is here to help you find the monster and protect you." "But I have Bookie." "Who is Bookie?" he asked. "The supernatural book," I replied. "So you gave it a name?" he asked me as he focused on me. "Yup, he likes it." I smiled. "He? Do you realize it’s just a book?" "Not just any kind of book, it’s a magic and ancient book, which means you should respect it." "Come in here." He said and the door opened. A girl about my height walked in. She was wearing a black leather jacket and faded black jeans with a bow around her shoulder and arrows on her other shoulder. She has long hair, reaching her back length, and what shocked me most was that I was looking at myself in her. A Doppelganger they call it. "Impossible." I whispered as I almost broke down. I swallowed hard. "What’s wrong?" the head of the council asked. "I have a twin sister and you didn’t tell me?" I yelled
Just as I suspected, Arden had already smelled her and was already on my bed. Still shocked. "So, you are saying that you are an Elf? And your mission is to protect my sister from monsters?" Arden asked Este as I entered. "Yes, I am here to serve the chosen one." Arden laughed at Este. "Can you hear yourself? She is the chosen one... which means, she is meant to protect you, not the other way round." Este looked at me then focused on Arden. "Are you sure she can protect herself? I heard she hasn’t even had her first bite and will be dead in two days and you expect me to believe she can protect herself and the whole world?...what a joke." "I’m right here guys," I said as I walked to my bed. "And Arden, get out." "Why don’t you want mom to find out?" he asked. "I ask the same question," Este said as she stood up from the window she was sitting on and jumped down. She walked towards the door and opened it. "Don’t even dare." I looked at her as she closed it and walked toward my bed
"Inez," Denise called, waving as she ran to me. She hugged me with so much joy. "I thought you wouldn’t make it. I was so scared." she released me from her grip. "I’m fine now, really." I gave her a soft smile. Denise looked at the girl next to me. "You made a new friend and..." "She’s my cousin." I cut in immediately. Denise smiled. "That’s great, I’m glad to meet you." she stretched her hand towards Este. "I’m Denise." Este took Denise’s hand into hers. "Este." She said as she removed her hat. "O.M.G!" Denise said slowly. What she saw surprised her. "This is the first time I’m seeing someone’s cousin have the same look as the person...are you sure, she’s not your twin sister?" She asked me but I shook my head. Well, I was also shocked the first time I saw her, and I still haven’t gotten used to it or her. She scares me but when I feel her aura, it makes me want her to stay closer to me. "Well Denise, how about we get ready and set our camp in the woods?" I proposed.
"But Principal Elise, we thought we were going to swim today!" Jada said as she stood up from where she was seated. "We don’t want to hear a story... we are not kids!" she added."You are the only one who disagrees with Jada, no one else... so sit down." principal Elise said.She looked directly at her friend and took Maddie’s hand. "Maddie does." Confused, Maddie looked at the remaining students and back at Jada. "I do?""Yes Maddie, remember?" Jada said. Giving her friend an agreement look."I think it’d be best to sit with the rest of the people tonight and swim tomorrow before we go home.— I mean, it’s getting dark and I am scared and the water will be too cold Jada, unless you are a witch, then you can survive out there alone." Maddie said as she covered her body properly with the blanket around her shoulders. I was sure she wasn’t in the mood for Jada’s company. She wanted to stay and have fun with the rest of the class. Jada felt embarrassed. She scoffed and carried her bag.
