Ch 35. Your Essence

To my surprise, the widow doesn’t seem to be discouraged by my appearance at all.

She stops in front of the house, looking curiously at the wood shingles on her roof. “What are you doing up there?”

“Isn’t it obvious? I’m fixing the roof!” Grinning, I pat one of the planks. Then I realize my grin might not be the most pleasant sight considering the way I look. “Did you manage to leave the room unseen?”

“Yes, it’s not the first time I’ve accidentally seen them like that.” She holds out the basket and gives me the sweetest smile. “I’ve brought meat pie. The kitchen ladies always let me have some leftovers.”

Food! Finally! It’s been too long since I ate.

Probably considering my silence as a sign of disgust, she tries to convince me. “It has meat, vegetables, and seasonings in a nice pastry crust. The palace cook is the best in all the realm and everything out of her oven is to die for.”

From the roof, I can already smell the savory aroma wafting from the food. It smells delicious.
